Is Ichiro Gonna Do it?

Recommended Posts

We've got about three weeks left of games and he's 25 hits shy of the elusive record. Many are figuring he's got the record hands down, but he's been slumping a lot lately. I think he'll do it, but not until the last week of the season.

Just for reference, he's 0-1 tonight with 3 walks. I believe that doubles his season total in that department.

Ichiro is going for something? Wouldn't know it from Sportscenter.

Ah yes, they just mentioned something about

"Some guy who doesn't appear to be Barry Bonds doing something or other. We think he may be Chinese, but we have yet to confirm that. In other news, not only did Barry Bonds go 3 for 3 (eight minute highlight package of the three at bats) but he flashed the LEATHA (slow-mo replay of Bonds making routine catch repeated ten times) He's not just a hitting machine folks, He's a WEB GEM A NIGHT!

ah, yes, that other guy was Korean or something."

Seriously, though, I do think he'll surge and make it.

Six games against the "fearsome" Texas pitching should help Ichiro get a good chunk of the hits he needs. It'll be close, but i think he'll just get the record sometime in the M's final three-game series with the Rangers.

Post of the day...of course, I've barely been on today, so who knows.

The Rangers will pitch around him as long their in the playoff hunt. That's the problem with the west, is that all the other teams are still in the hunt. He'll get chances like tonight, where he'll get three walks.

Nah the Boston series killed him where he went 0-fer-the middle two games. Still not complaining--first player ever with 200 hits in each of his first four seasons in the league, and of course the forthcoming (early 05) honor of quickest to 1,000. He won't get the pitches if the M's have runners on (of course you wouldn't know that mattered from THIS series), do Oakland or Anaheim want the honor of struggling with the fucking Mariners? I mean if you're the Halos, you're scratching your head. You gave up six runs the whole series and you merely SPLIT?

I'd like to say i hope Ichiro falls short of the record. No offense to Ichiro, he's had a nice year. Looking his stats, he has a great average, and alot of hits most which are singles.

Gammons posted Sisler's 1920 numbers and they blow Ichiro's away. I'm too lazy to post them, and ESPN.COM is so fucking slow.

George Sisler's 1920 season was better, but Ichiro is the better player overall. Ichiro's career batting average is .338, while George Sisler's was .340. But Sisler did it while the league average was .295, while Ichiro has done it while the career average was .260. Sisler hit for power in 1920, but that power dissapated quickly after he turned 30. Ichiro is a better basestealer, and a better fielder.

And here is a short list of players who have better career OBPs than George Sisler. Fred McGriff, Alvin Davis, Earl Torgeson, Jack Clark, Mark McGwire, Gene Tenace, Ralph Kiner, Elmer Valo, Max Bishop, Eddie Stanky.

Nice nice work.

The worst was during the game for the Brewers, when they'd go to break and show you who was due up, it would look something like this. Going to the bottom of the inning when the Brewers were up:

DUE UP:

8 Ginter

9 Santos

1 Podsednik

But when San Francisco was up and the #4 spot was due up...

DUE UP:

BONDS

Jesus H. Christ.

You know, I saw that and I only had the picture on, was listening to my iPod, and it honestly caused me to laugh out loud. I thought about posting something about it to the board, but forgot.

It was hilarious.

Although, I do think 700 is a huge milestone and at least for a few days he deserves the coverage.

I was taping the World Cup of Hockey final game the other night, because I couldn't guarantee that I'd be home to watch it all. I was joking with one of my friends that they'd probably cut away, mid-game, to show each of Bonds' at-bats. And, mid-way through the conversation it dawned on me: I wasn't really joking. I wouldn't have been at all surprised if they'd done that.

Sorry, that was way off-topic. I don't think that Ichiro will be able to do it, unless Texas falls WAY out of the race and thus doesn't really care about winning each game. If it's a must-win game, they're pitching around him and dealing with the rest of the line-up.

He can't be around, but he said if he does seal the deal with her, he'll call me on the cell phone his parents bought for him so I can let you all know.

"God damn it! We've gotta be on the field in five minutes, where the hell is Suzuki?"

"I think he said he was going on the Internet to tell everyone he was about to hit, skipper"

Remember though Sisler suffered a serious eye injury around the age of 30 and he was never the same player again.

I have to say that this has my attention. I check the Mariners boxscore every night before I go to sleep, at that time they are usually in the 6th or 7th.

Total combined times I've checked a Mariners boxscore in my life before this: 0

Total times after this season: (Probably) 0

I really really hope he does it. I also want Barry Bonds to hit 850 HRs, which puts me in an extreme minority on this board.

In my wildest dreams, that man would be Miguel Cabrera. One, because he is my favorite player and two because I own a lot of things that would shoot up in price if he did it!

Although I think that's an inattainable goal. I couldn't even begin to imagine the hype something like 800, 900, or God forbid 1000 HRs would generate on ESPN. They would probably just train a camera on the guy like the Truman Show...with running commentary from Stuart Scott Jr. "Look at the way he eats that ham sandwich. Booyalahlala. R.I.P. to my dad, the greatest TARHEEL of them all." (I am a Tarheel, and I HATE how big Stu big ups the Tarheels in every fucking sentence)

Well, I guess you're right. I mean the insane, over the top unbearable Bonds coverage has only been going on for a few days.

Here's what I don't get about Bonds and 700. It's not a statistically significant home run, just a nice round number. He's not even passing anyone like he did when he hit 661 and passed Mays. I could care less if he hits #700...wake me up after 15 more and he passes Ruth.

There are things on the show between the Bonds blowing that I'd like to see.

And I don't know how anyone can justify giving eight minutes to a guy who goes 0-4 with a walk or 1-3 or some other uneventful night.
