NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted October 27, 2004 This was hilarious. Stern did a lot of "Your dad got you the job" blah blah, however Powell was caught very off guard. Good Stuff......here is the link if you want to listen to the archive. You have to wait for a few commercial breaks before Stern calls in, and the feed goes silent during commercial breaks, so don't think the feed is cut off....... Stern vs. Powell

bobobrazil1984 0 Report post Posted October 27, 2004 i think its pathetic we have to wait months for howard stern to ask some "tough" questions (which werent tough and should have been talked to with Powell months ago). Powell wouldn't even come on that radio show unless the host agreed to refrain questions. OMG ITS SO SHOCKING STERN CLALED< someone actually got to ask a few questions, of the guy who's supposed to be protecting our airwaves! Holy mother of god! Who the fuck are these people, they have to be protected from *GASP* QUESTIONS from us normal folk. Afterwards, apparently hell broke loose after the show went off the air, throwing a hissy fit because someone managed to actually get access to ask some real questions. I hate the FCC and this Powell with a burning passion that makes Bush and Kerry look like saints to me. Grr.
Slayer 0 Report post Posted October 28, 2004 Isn't that the way of the government though? Try to call them out on something and they're still convinced what they're doing is the "right thing" for us The War on Indecency is bullshit

UZI Suicide 0 Report post Posted October 28, 2004 Michael Powell and the entire FCC is a fucking joke. It's too bad they didn't let Howard go at him like I'm sure he wanted to, the host kept lowering Stern's volume and talking over him when he was asking questions. Like Howard was saying on his show this morning.. this shouldn't be such a big news item. The head of the FCC, who is now telling us what we can and can't see/hear should ALWAYS be open for questioning from the public. BTW.. Powell sounds like a fag. CBright7831 0 Report post Posted October 28, 2004 Can someone tell me what time it came on. I started at 20 minutes into the show (because the website said so itself), but I got commercials.

Vyce 0 Report post Posted October 28, 2004 The real question Powell should be asked: how come he fines Stern and not the Stern "clones", when the Stern clones, quite frankly, are about 100 times funnier and more innovative than Stern is (or has been for a good 5 years). Guest MikeSC Report post Posted October 28, 2004 I guess Powell is evil because he didn't discover that lesbians = ratings as quickly as Stern did. Of course, Powell has been relevant as of late, while Stern hasn't sniffed relevancy in many years now. -=Mike
NYU 0 Report post Posted October 28, 2004 Which is why, of course, there's only been people proclaiming that he may very well save the entire Satellite Radio industry with his jump onto Sirius. That always happens when you no longer become relevant. Ah yes, you also get major media attention in newspapers, top headlines on news websites, and a major cover story on the Drudge Report (gasp) when you are no longer relevant as well. Damn that Howard Stern. Why, he hasn't been talked about in years!
Ted the Poster 0 Report post Posted October 28, 2004 The satellite radio industry is still growing, with no signs of stopping that I've seen. Well, the XM brand at least. Sirius sucks.

That always happens when you no longer become relevant. Wasn't aware that satellite radio was on death's door. It's a new medium that is growing and would grow without that overrated pile of suck. MSNBC thought bringing in Phil Donahue would spark ratings growth. People have amazing faith in the drawing power of has-beens. Ah yes, you also get major media attention in newspapers, top headlines on news websites, and a major cover story on the Drudge Report (gasp) when you are no longer relevant as well. Damn that Howard Stern. Why, he hasn't been talked about in years! Donahue got the same treatment when he went to MSNBC --- or was it CNBC? As you see, it's not as if it was memorable or important. Opie and Anthony are better at Stern's schtick than Stern. -=Mike

Slayer 0 Report post Posted October 28, 2004 Let's not let this thread devolve into whether Stern is a name anymore or not. The important issue is the head of the organization that believes it knows what is good and bad for the American public's eyes/ears is attempting to hide from the scrutiny over the bullshit policies his organization has engaged in since "the breast that launched 1000 censors"

Can you fathom how many people called and complained? The people who complained to their congressmen --- and rest assured, they did so --- will cause things to happen. Michael Powell did what he was hired to do. It's not always fun to do the ugly things. -=Mike
Jobber of the Week 0 Report post Posted October 28, 2004 The internet will be regulated and censored just as other forms of media are the moment they are able to do so, and unfortunately it is only a matter of time. Kind of hard to regulate something which isn't owned or operated by any one country, bucko. PS: My neighbor has owned XM for 2 years and Sirius for a little over one. Says XM is experience a massive talent hemmorage and many channels are run without ever hearing a DJ voice, live or voicetracked. Also says that Sirius is run by a bunch of idiot executives who would rather stick their heads in the sand than admit a problem. Their stations only really like to play hits, rarely play a B-side, and even if someone requests a more obscure song by a popular band, they'll just play one of the well-known songs and screw your request. He blames Sirius' problems mostly on a consulting firm for FM stations that they've hired.

Slayer 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2004 The only way they could do that is by 1. Cracking down on what American servers can carry, and 2. Regulating and restricting what people can access on their comp (since they can't control foreign servers)

What's your definition of relevant? All over every newssite website? He made a story about his leaving FM for satellite --- and that was his first mention in the culture at large in years. And he's a non-issue again. I suppose somebody who matters is my definition of relevance. -=Mike

I want to compliment you and Mike for bringing up O&A, since they are far, far better than Howard Stern is, or perhaps ever was. And by bringing them up, you also bring up Stern's own hypocrisy. He's not exactly the one who should be complaining about censorship, seeing as he was able to quite effectively censor O&A and several other DJs for a long time - hell, O&A weren't even allowed to say Stern's own NAME on their show. I won't even pretend to be a big O & A fan, but having heard them and Stern, Stern's show is just the same old crap, every single day. His interviews suck. His comedy bits ceased being funny long ago. His cast of characters are less entertaining than a barrel of Horatio Sanzes. O & A lost their show over their antics and they have not once bitched and moaned. They freely acknowledge that they crossed a line --- and I respect the heck out of them for doing so. -=Mike
