Cuban Linx 0 Report post Posted January 24, 2005 I don't know why Texas not wanting to have Delgado at 1st was such a big sticking point that they'd pull out just when it looked like they might have been the favorites to land him. Earlier in the off-season they were thinking about moving Teixeira to the outfield anyway and playing Adrian Gonzales at 1st full-time (and Delgado's about a million times an upgrade on that), Teixeira had no problem moving and has played left field before anyway, it's seems rather minor to completely cut off negotiations that could have given Texas maybe the most potent offence in the league, or at least close to it. Delgado near a decision Monday, January 24, 2005 NEW YORK - The Texas Rangers abruptly withdrew last night from the competition to sign Carlos Delgado and the free-agent first baseman failed to respond to the Mets by their deadline, perhaps leaving Florida and Baltimore as the remaining contenders to sign him. Texas announced its withdrawal in a statement yesterday. Delgado's agent, David Sloane, said in a telephone interview that the Mets pulled out during a telephone call he had with chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon and general manager Omar Minaya. The Mets said they were unsure where they stood with Delgado. "Jeff and I spoke to Mr. Sloane tonight, and we let him know we were trying to get a resolution on this matter this evening," Minaya said in a statement. "He said he would convey those thoughts to Carlos, and he would call us back after speaking with Carlos. We have yet to receive that callback." With the Rangers, where Delgado would play became an issue yesterday. "From the first conversation with the Texas Rangers, we made it crystal clear that Carlos Delgado had no interest in being a full-time DH," Sloane said. "If we had 25 conversations with the Texas Rangers, we were told in 24 of those that the question of him playing first base was no issue. Earlier today, we were told that is changing and that 75 percent of his at-bats, should he choose to sign with the Texas Rangers, would come as a DH." Rangers owner Tom Hicks met with Delgado in Puerto Rico and offered a $48 million, four-year contract. "He is a quality individual, but we want to continue to be committed with our young players and development plan. We have a first baseman in Mark Teixeira and other young players that we do not want to disrupt with potential position changes. Tom Hicks is not, and was not, afraid to spend money to add players like Carlos to our club," Texas general manager Tom Hart said. Earlier yesterday, Sloane said Delgado was nearing a decision, one that could come as soon as today. "Following these discussions, we now have a pretty clear picture of the landscape as it presently exists," Sloane said. David Sloane is a crafty man and I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't all a clever ploy to have teams bid all over each other. I just hope that sometime in the next 10-12 hours he's a Marlin. geniusMoment 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2005 I would rather have Aurilia than Larkin. Sans last year Aurilia has been a solid shortstop. Leaving the big confines of Seattle, San Diego and San Fran, for the Great American Small Park should improve his numbers. From 99-03 he put up solid numbers, with his one spectacular year in 01.
