I don't know why Texas not wanting to have Delgado at 1st was such a big sticking point that they'd pull out just when it looked like they might have been the favorites to land him.

Earlier in the off-season they were thinking about moving Teixeira to the outfield anyway and playing Adrian Gonzales at 1st full-time (and Delgado's about a million times an upgrade on that), Teixeira had no problem moving and has played left field before anyway, it's seems rather minor to completely cut off negotiations that could have given Texas maybe the most potent offence in the league, or at least close to it.

It amazes me that the Rangers were persuing this deal at all. There's got to be a better use for of money for a team with a potent offense to sign a 1B/DH long term.

David Sloane is an asshole.

Delgado near a decision

Monday, January 24, 2005

NEW YORK - The Texas Rangers abruptly withdrew last night from the competition to sign Carlos Delgado and the free-agent first baseman failed to respond to the Mets by their deadline, perhaps leaving Florida and Baltimore as the remaining contenders to sign him.

Texas announced its withdrawal in a statement yesterday. Delgado's agent, David Sloane, said in a telephone interview that the Mets pulled out during a telephone call he had with chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon and general manager Omar Minaya. The Mets said they were unsure where they stood with Delgado.

"Jeff and I spoke to Mr. Sloane tonight, and we let him know we were trying to get a resolution on this matter this evening," Minaya said in a statement. "He said he would convey those thoughts to Carlos, and he would call us back after speaking with Carlos. We have yet to receive that callback."

With the Rangers, where Delgado would play became an issue yesterday.

"From the first conversation with the Texas Rangers, we made it crystal clear that Carlos Delgado had no interest in being a full-time DH," Sloane said. "If we had 25 conversations with the Texas Rangers, we were told in 24 of those that the question of him playing first base was no issue. Earlier today, we were told that is changing and that 75 percent of his at-bats, should he choose to sign with the Texas Rangers, would come as a DH."

Rangers owner Tom Hicks met with Delgado in Puerto Rico and offered a $48 million, four-year contract.

"He is a quality individual, but we want to continue to be committed with our young players and development plan. We have a first baseman in Mark Teixeira and other young players that we do not want to disrupt with potential position changes. Tom Hicks is not, and was not, afraid to spend money to add players like Carlos to our club," Texas general manager Tom Hart said.

Earlier yesterday, Sloane said Delgado was nearing a decision, one that could come as soon as today.

"Following these discussions, we now have a pretty clear picture of the landscape as it presently exists," Sloane said. "We anticipate talking further tomorrow and hope we'll be able to have a final decision very soon."

one of the weirder rumors I've heard is that neither the O's nor the Fish have guranteed the 4th year, yet there the only teams still in the running.

Delgado must be shitting himself. haha

ESPNEWS just said the O's backed out of the Delgado race, well, only one team left

WTF? Considering they've made exactly ZERO significant moves this offseason (no, signing two guys whose combined age is 500 doesn't count), why would they pull out. Goddamnit, it's really becoming difficult to be an Orioles fan.

Yeah like a pitching staff that consists of more than Kenny Rogers.

now WFAN is backtracking, saying the Mets are still in it for Delgado. I can't believe the big deal of the off season is over Delgado of all people. Everyone thought this would happen with Beltran or Pedro.

Hell I don't think Mets fans would be disappointed with 80 wins, much less 3rd place.

you know what, I don't even hate the Mets. Like the Knicks, it's somehow just impossible to pass up a potshot at them.

The suspense is killing me. Mets are in, mets are out. O's are in, O's are out. David Sloane is a crafty man and I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't all a clever ploy to have teams bid all over each other.

I just hope that sometime in the next 10-12 hours he's a Marlin.

ok now the New York radio is saying the Mets upped their offer to 4/56. Needlesss to say, this may not be true.

4/56? Wow and I thought he wouldn't get anywhere near the 4/64 he wanted

Reds sign Rich Aurilia.

It's a minor league deal, which is probably all that Aurilia is worth about now. Tony Womack he's not, but he'll probably make the team is because they need some insurance for Lopez, what with Larkin furiously charging after windmills this offseason.

I would rather have Aurilia than Larkin. Sans last year Aurilia has been a solid shortstop. Leaving the big confines of Seattle, San Diego and San Fran, for the Great American Small Park should improve his numbers. From 99-03 he put up solid numbers, with his one spectacular year in 01. He is only 33, I could see him having a solid year for cincy. I could see him hitting .275 with 20 home runs, knocking in 75 runs.

I live on as the updater of news, it seems.

Cleveland Indians re-signed SP Jake Westbrook to a 2 year, $7.50 Million contract with a club option for 2007.

Arizona Diamondbacks signed 1B Tony Clark to a 1 year, $750K contract.

Tampa Bay Devil Rays signed OF Chris Singleton to an MLC and invited to ST.

Chicago White Sox will sign 2B Tadahito Iguchi to a 2 year contract.
