Fuzzy Dunlop Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 Seriously, I have some friends who just HATE sports, like they can't watch for more than five minutes without falling asleep even if it's a great game. They tell me it's because they don't know what's going on so I try to explain things and then they're just bored, and if one of them's over at my house and we're surfing the net or playing video games, and there's a big game on, they're just like, "oh well, time for me to go." Can somebody explain this to me?
2GOLD Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 They're terrorist Everyone likes at least ONE kind of sport. If they like none, then they are either a terrorist or an alien. Just to be clear...I am kidding. Not about the alien thing though, god damn tentacle using freaks!
MrRant Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 Well we know you are an extremist Loss. You feel better for being against the norm.
Guest Vitamin X Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 For some people, I know that it's more difficult for them to watch a game than actually go out and play it. Some people have no interest in sports at all period, just like a lot of us don't really have an interest in say, reality shows, game shows, or a lot of other crap that people will watch that boggles my mind as to why.
Guest Loss Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 I am not an extremist, and the whole "mainstream" aspect of it has nothing to do with sports. I have tried several times to give sports a chance, and I guess I've just never caught a good game. I get frustrated watching most games because I want the game to continue and there are too many time-outs and commercial breaks and too much clock stopping. I respect sports from an athletic standpoint, but I don't know who to root for. Being from my hometown isn't enough reason for me to cheer someone since I dislike plenty of people from my hometown. I don't know who to get behind and support. One team winning doesn't make my life any better or worse, I guess, and I can't seem to find entertainment value in it because most sports I've seen are so slow. Part of it probably also stems from the whole "picked last in gym class" thing, honestly, but that's not the deciding factor. I'm also the type of person that would rather have a conversation with someone than watch a TV show or event with someone -- and that's not just limited to sports. So there you have it.
nl5xsk1 Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 I really have no beef with people that hate sports. I don't agree with them -I'm a huge football fan & an even bigger hockey fan - but I can understand why they might not dig sports. Two of the three most popular American sports (baseball & basketball) bore the piss out of me, and if I never had to sit through a game again it'd be fine. Loss, what pro sports have you seen live?
Guest Salacious Crumb Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 I don't really care unless they pointlessly bash sports. The people that bug me are the ones that always have to chime in about how pointless sports are if they even just think they overhear people talking about them.
Guest Loss Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 Basketball, baseball, football, hockey and tennis.

I don't bash people for their interests. I mean, obviously, it's giving a lot of people joy and entertainment, so I'm not going to insult it. It's just not for me.
MARTYEWR Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 DocOck, I've experienced that too with some friends of mine who don't care for sports either, but to be honest, I can't knock them for it, since there's some stuff they like that I can't stand, so much that I don't even wanna watch it myself. For instance, I have friends who, for some God-forsaken reason, LOVE CKY, Jackass and all other stuff like that, and I hate, hate, HATE that stuff. Heck, my girlfriend loves that stuff, but whenever she's ready to watch it with me, I'm ready to say, "So, I'll see you next time?" Besides, sports, as much as I love it, is one of those few things I actually enjoy watching on TV alone.
nl5xsk1 Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 I think out of the sports you listed, Loss, only hockey is better live than on TV. The times that I go to basketball or baseball games I spend more time people-watching or just fucking around than I do really caring about the game. Football & tennis are actually better on TV because of replays, stats, etc. /yes, this might be a +1
MARTYEWR Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 Basketball, baseball, football, hockey and tennis. Loss, you'd be better off with golf. It's more up your alley. I've seen full golf tournaments live that have the same non-stop excitement of a Rey Mysterio vs. Psychosis match.
Guest Salacious Crumb Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 I think football sucks live to be honest. It just moves to fast for me and I can't really take it in like I can on tv. That and I froze to death sitting through an OSU/Purdue game about 5 years ago. Hockey is awesome live. I haven't met a person yet that doesn't have fun going live.
Guest Loss Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 Basketball I could probably get into most, if only because the camera takes you right inside the action and it's faster-paced. I just don't really know who I'm supposed to be cheering. Baseball is just so s.l.o.w. to me. Anytime I try to watch a game, it just seems to be 2.5 hours of people standing around. Football ... I've tried and tried, especially since my family is filled with huge fans. I've been to NFL games, collegiate games and high school games. None of it does much for me. Hockey just didn't do anything for me. Tennis was interesting, but I could only watch the ball bounce back and forth so many times. I do appreciate the game and the athleticism behind all of these things. I just can't make myself like watching them.

You think football is "too fast" live, but you love hockey? Not that I'm arguing with you, I just find that thought interesting...
Guest Salacious Crumb Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 Hockey is more simple though. Football can just be a headache trying to keep up with everything. Added to the fact I live in Ohio and games suck to be at after Thanksgiving.
Guest El Satanico Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 I'm a fan of NFL and a semi fan of College Football, the rest I could care less about.
Lightning Flik Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 People who hate something, don't neccessarily hate it. Most people need some incident to happen to make them interested in whatever it is they dislike. I say interested, because you can't get rid of dislike so easily.
kkktookmybabyaway Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 Well we know you are an extremist Loss. He's not an extremist, you insensitive prick. He's just not a real man. But so what if someone doesn't like sports? If 300 million people in the US loved sports, do you know how hard it would be to get a ticket?...
MARTYEWR Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 Some Green Bay Packers and Washington Redskins fans already know that.
NoCalMike Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 This is the conflict I have because I am the rare breed that is Metalhead and Sports fanatic all wrapped into one person. So all my sports watching friends look at me weird when I happen to tell them some of the music I listen to, while my metalhead friends don't understand why I "waste my time" watch sports.
The Czech Republic Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 A note to people who like making fun of hockey fans: "What's the deal with icing? It's all ice!" never was nor is funny.

Special K Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 I don't hate sports, I watch NFL quite often, and play fantasy football. However, watching sports enough to get a good idea of the players/teams involves a BIG time investment, especially if you work full-time. I'd rather read or party or play video games or pretty much anything. And if you don't get to know the teams or players, it's usually just something you do out of boredom.
