Nighthawk Posted December 28, 2004 Author Report Posted December 28, 2004 You know, I don't really like a lot of rock music from the 60s. I like a lot of pop, and there was some good soul and stuff going on. Sly & the Family Stone were putting out killer albums. My favorite stuff of theirs was from the 70s, but still. I suppose I'll go along with all rock music that matters starting with the Velvet Underground, but most of the scene, I guess you just had to be there.
Myxamatosis Posted December 28, 2004 Report Posted December 28, 2004 The Shins' "Oh Inverted World" is amazing. Beach Boys + Beatles = The Shins.
Murmuring Beast Posted December 28, 2004 Report Posted December 28, 2004 Pet Sounds is the least accessible Beach Boys album, but it is very good, if an acquired taste.
B. Brian Brunzell Posted December 28, 2004 Report Posted December 28, 2004 My favourite Sly Stone track is "Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey." Great take on racism.
Anorak Posted December 28, 2004 Report Posted December 28, 2004 The Clash were a crap pub rock band. I'd rather listen to the 5 or 6 good songs the Pistols did than anything by their supposed superiors.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted December 28, 2004 Report Posted December 28, 2004 I don't much care for the Clash outside of London Calling, which I love. The Sex Pistols, while undeniably important in music history, were mostly awful, though "Bodies" and "Anarchy in the U.K." were kinda fun.
PLAGIARISM! Posted December 29, 2004 Report Posted December 29, 2004 I love the first Clash album, but it's not amazing. I would certainly put them above pub rock. Now The Damned, that's ultimate pub rock. But I like that too.
PLAGIARISM! Posted December 29, 2004 Report Posted December 29, 2004 Oh, and check out The Monks' Black Monk Time for good 60s music.
nl5xsk1 Posted December 29, 2004 Report Posted December 29, 2004 I don't much care for the Clash outside of London Calling, which I love. The Sex Pistols, while undeniably important in music history, were mostly awful, though "Bodies" and "Anarchy in the U.K." were kinda fun. Replace Anarchy in the UK with New York, Submission and/or Revolution in the Classroom, and I agree. Anarchy is so overrated, I can barely listen to it.
Nighthawk Posted December 30, 2004 Author Report Posted December 30, 2004 I like Sporty Spice's version of "Anarchy in the UK" better.
B. Brian Brunzell Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 I prefer Motorhead's version of "God Save the Queen" over the Pistol's.
Nighthawk Posted December 30, 2004 Author Report Posted December 30, 2004 A version of Anarchy in the UK that's worse than the Pistols' version is Crue's, largely because Vince Neil attempts a fake accent. For some god forsaken reason I like Vince Neil, but I can't support that.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 Albums Imported to My iPod Today (I make no apologies for the sheer dorkiness of this post): The Decemberists - 5 Songs The Decemberists - Her Majesty, the Decemberists Brian Eno - Another Green World Mission of Burma - OnOffOn Mission of Burma - Vs. Outkast - Stankonia Ruins - Hyderomastogroningem Ruins - Tzomborgha XTC - Black Sea XTC - Nonsuch
Guest The Winter Of My Discontent Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 The mention of Juliana Hatfield last night has just made me download her first two solo albums. Very tasty.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 I HATE MY SISTER/SHE IS SUCH A BITCH
Guest The Winter Of My Discontent Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 I HATE MY SISTER/SHE IS SUCH A BITCH That was 3 tracks ago. Her music, while still poppy, is much butchier than Evan Dando's.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted December 31, 2004 Report Posted December 31, 2004 Idea for a cover band I thought of at work. Standing on the shoulders of they might be giants. If anyone's enough of a dork to do that, it's probably taken. Also, "Coverboy." Do Get Lucky in its entirety.
Hank Kingsley Posted January 1, 2005 Report Posted January 1, 2005 "Into the White" by the Pixies is such a repetitive song. I have no idea why I enjoy it so much.
PLAGIARISM! Posted January 2, 2005 Report Posted January 2, 2005 I hated 'Into The White' at first cos of the lyrics, but Joey makes it good towards the end.
Red Baron Posted January 3, 2005 Report Posted January 3, 2005 Ozzy's voice on the s/t sounds better than anything else he's ever done.
Nighthawk Posted January 3, 2005 Author Report Posted January 3, 2005 The basement tapes were the best he's ever sounded... that means his voice has been on a nonstop decline since the very beginning. What a shame.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted January 6, 2005 Report Posted January 6, 2005 Brian Eno's "pop" albums, ranked in preferential order: Before and After Science Here Come the Warm Jets Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) Another Green World
Guest The Winter Of My Discontent Posted January 6, 2005 Report Posted January 6, 2005 I like The Go! team.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted January 6, 2005 Report Posted January 6, 2005 Arcade Fire live show, for those of you who might fancy it. I'm impressed with how catchy and immediate Husker Du's Zen Arcade is for as rough an album as it is. I've listened to it only three times so far and I'm already growling along.
PLAGIARISM! Posted January 6, 2005 Report Posted January 6, 2005 Brian Eno's "pop" albums, ranked in preferential order: Before and After Science Here Come the Warm Jets Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) Another Green World Going up or down? I must get Before and After Science.
PLAGIARISM! Posted January 6, 2005 Report Posted January 6, 2005 hmm. I can't comment, but I've not really heard anyone rave about Science before, so I'll pick it up. Won't be as good as SPARKS THOUGH YOU FUCKER
Hank Kingsley Posted January 6, 2005 Report Posted January 6, 2005 Arcade Fire live show, for those of you who might fancy it. that makes me quiver with anticipation. I hope they come to Florida.
Henry Spencer Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 Brian Eno's "pop" albums, ranked in preferential order: Before and After Science Here Come the Warm Jets Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) Another Green World I haven't heard Taking Tiger Mountain, but I see the other three like this: 1. Another Green World 2. Before & After Science 3. Here Come The Warm Jets
Nighthawk Posted January 7, 2005 Author Report Posted January 7, 2005 Anybody else get Brian Eno confused with Emo Philips? I do. Occasionally.
