Prophet of Mike Zagurski 0 Report post Posted December 10, 2004 I have been working at a "Safeway" supermarket since mid-October. Its had its ups and downs. The things that piss me off about the job are the following: 1. The union. I pay 50 cents per week for the union but I do not know what they are doing to help me. I make minimum wage and I thought the unions cared about everyone, that's why they had the big strike. I could try finding a job somewhere else and keep fifty cents a week. 2.The managers. I worked Thursday morning and there were 4 managers in there and most of them are rude to the employees because of the small mistakes we make. I think what I hate about the job is how expendable I am to them. 3. The hours. Supermarket working hours vary especially because of the holidays. Even before the holidays, I would have killed for consistent hours. Now, here is the thing. My 1st semester of college is almost over and during this semester, I was able to be in school during Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I told them I could work the remaining days. Well my next semester is coming soon and I'm in school all 5 days. I told my manager that and he asked if I wanted to still work there and I told him yes.(If I told him no, my mom would have gotten upset.) I'm sorry but I want to grow up and be someone instead of bagging groceries my entire life. I wanted to rant and see if anyone had any similar experiences and here's a bonus. With the semester ending, there is a girl I like. I would talk to her but: 1) She tends to arrive at class 5 to 15 minutes late. 2) Leaves during class. 3) Is on her cell phone a lot. I saw her after class and I was going to talk to her but she was on it. (She's a commuter student so I can't go to her dorm room.) What should I do?
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted December 10, 2004 I'd say she's on to your shifty eyes and is pulling out all the stops to ensure that you approaching her isn't feasible. But just leave class before you think she's gonna and then hang around the area until you see her and think of something to ask or say to her.
BX 0 Report post Posted December 10, 2004 Mr. Chong, I am in a similar quandry, pls help. With the semester ending, there is a girl I like. I would talk to her but: 1) She tends to arrive at class 5 to 15 minutes late. 2) Waits around after class to speak to me. 3) Sees me all the time. I spent two hours with her after class and she has visited my place of work the last two days straight. 4) Has a boyfriend, a guy that I know, who moved in right before I was gunna say something to her last month. What should I do? What should I use to injure the boyfriend and win her heart?
Guest Brian Report post Posted December 10, 2004 1. The union. I pay 50 cents per week for the union but I do not know what they are doing to help me. I make minimum wage and I thought the unions cared about everyone, that's why they had the big strike. I could try finding a job somewhere else and keep fifty cents a week. It depends how stong your union is. My union offers free legal counseling for members, protects workers from wrongful firing, among other things, and allows you to file grievances and such. It depends really.

kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted December 10, 2004 I've worked a number of crappys jobs in my life, but never one in a supermarket. You have my sympathies. Wait until next semester when the managers throw out your scheduling conflict and put you on for 3-4 days of the week when you are in class...

Guest Dynamite Kido Report post Posted December 10, 2004 Dude, I feel your pain for working at a Supermarket this time of year as I used to years ago. Also, as far as union dues go......claim them on your income tax and you'll get it all back around tax return time.
Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted December 10, 2004 50 cents a week? When I was in the bricklayers union it was like 50 dollars a week. And it was a total racket.
MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted December 10, 2004 I get $1 taken out of my paycheck so I can wear casual clothes on casual friday even though Im not allowed to wear casual clothes in the kitchen when Im working (The rest of the hospital staff can wear casual clothes on friday). I tried arguing the point but was told "Its for charity" and "its only a dollar" (Well actually its $26 a year), but I think I should be allowed to opt out since I see no benefit from it. I think they require it because the hospital gets a lot of awards and crap from the charities that get the money (and probably some sort of tax break too). Guest sek69 Report post Posted December 11, 2004 For the record, up until last month I worked for a company that handled local wage taxes, and yes you can write off union dues. In fact, on the form for business expenses there's a line to enter any dues paid. As far as the charity goes, that's a little more tricky. Some are tax deductable and some aren't. You'd need to check with the charity itself and ask if the donations are deductable. Odds are you won't be able to becaue your employer is most likely writing them off of the company taxes (the real reason they require everyone to donate) and if you wrote them off your taxes it might mess your shit up. Prophet of Mike Zagurski 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2004 On Thursday, I worked four hours without taking a break. On Friday, that girl in school that I like arrived at class 15 minutes late and she looked like she just woke up. I'll see her during the finals once and who knows if I'll ever see her again. Today, I got my schedule for next week. I'm working 21 hours and I did not get Sunday off like I wanted. I told this checker that I'll would be working 7 hour shifts. She said try doing it for 30 years. She told me told get comfortable shoes. I said I would go to Wal-Mart. A silence suddenly fell upon the room. She told me not to shop at Wal-Mart cause they are non-union. (Like I care, they have cheap prices.) Anyway, I did cart duty for an hour in the hot sun and apparently I did not do it good enough because Manager 13 out of 25 came to talk to me. I told him to put 2 people out there because they expect you do alot (collect carts, pick up trash, etc). After the first of Jan., I'll probably be let go because of my schedule changing. I want to leave but I have to get another job (according to the parents.) I missed RVD and Rey Mysterio. They were in town signing autographs and there was huge line out to see them. No one will end up watching the PPV tomorrow. Later.
