bob_barron Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 It cost 16 million and made 40 million. I call that a hit
Nighthawk Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 Well, I made a movie one time for no money, and sold it to a homeless guy for a nickel. So I made infinity profit on that, and I have the highest proportionate gross in film history. Seriously though, barron, you have the worst taste of anyone I've ever known, with the exception of my mother, the exception proving the rule being that Dirty Work is my favorite comedy ever. It's a mad, mad world indeed.
bob_barron Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 I've never even seen the movie. I think a movie making a 24 million dollar profit off domestic grosses alone qualifies it as a hit whether it sucked or not
Nighthawk Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 I agree. I just would never in a million years would have guessed it made that kind of profit.
Lil' Bitch Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 I can't believe I forgot about Batman and Robin. How did Gattaca do?
Guest Failed Mascot Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 Dirty Work is my favorite comedy ever. Norm McDonald and Artie Lang make an awesome comedic duo. That movie also had some good supporting actors in Don Rickels, Chris Farley, Chevy Chase, and the guy that owned the Sporting Goods store in the Problem Child series.
Downhome Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 It cost 16 million and made 40 million. I call that a hit It cost $48 Million, when you combine production and marketing. The film only brought in $43.4 Million worldwide, ($40 Million of that in the US).
Guest The Winter Of My Discontent Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 Chevy - Memoirs of an Invisible Man Am I the only one who liked that? No, I know a ton of people who love it, including myself. Agreed. I don't think any of us paid money to see it though. Chevy was killed by "Cops and Robbersons" and he wasn't helped by the beyond horrible "Vegas Vacation". I love all of those movies, but Memoirs was supposed to be Chevy's coming out party as a dramatic actor. I don't think the talk show helped any.
Guest The Shadow Behind You Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 that was a drama? I laughed my ass off at the pretentious overacting. I thought that was intentional.
Guest The Winter Of My Discontent Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 that was a drama? I laughed my ass off at the pretentious overacting. I thought that was intentional. ...funny guy
Guest Failed Mascot Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 If given a good role then Chevy could still come back today. I mean this is the man that made such hits as Funny Farm, Nothing But Trouble(one of the most under rated films ever), Caddyshack, Three Amigos, the National Lampoon Vacation series(Vegas Vacation not withstanding), and Sesame Street Presents: Follow That Bird. Alot of the other actors mentioned wouldn't create a buzz at all.
Guest The Winter Of My Discontent Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 Chevy's brain is fried. He permanently eliminated the funny part of his brain. But motherfuck, while on drugs, he was amazing. Part of me would like to see a resurgence, I know it could at least create a little buss, but the other part of me thinks it'll be terribly painful. I can't believe Failed Mascot didn't mention Fletch. Horrible.
Guest Failed Mascot Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 To be honest I've never seen Fletch. I can only go by what I've seen. If you saw Dirty Work though you can see the man can still be funny if given a good part. He was great as the Doctor who had problems gambling and owed bookies tons of money. Him betting against Rocky in Rocky III got a major laugh out of me.

ChrisMWaters Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 Didn't Batman and Robin also kill the career of Alicia Silverstone? Save for that "Braceface" Cartoon that came and went a while ago, haven't heard much from her, if anything.
Guest Failed Mascot Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 Oh, and as far as Dana Carvey goes he never really had a movie career. Sure the Wayne's World movies did well but Dana never carried anything. His only two solo movies I can think of both did terribly. Those being Masture of Disguise and Clean Slate.
1234-5678 Posted December 20, 2004 Author Report Posted December 20, 2004 Didn't Batman and Robin also kill the career of Alicia Silverstone? Save for that "Braceface" Cartoon that came and went a while ago, haven't heard much from her, if anything. She was in the really funny "Blast From The Past" a couple of years later with Brendan Fraser, but I don't think she's done anything of note since then. She's going to be in "Beauty Shop" with Queen Latifah though.
Gary Floyd Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 Didn't Batman and Robin also kill the career of Alicia Silverstone? Save for that "Braceface" Cartoon that came and went a while ago, haven't heard much from her, if anything. Actually, it was that movie, and that one she did with Benicio Del Toro. She had a show last year called "Ms. Match" that tanked really hard. Oh, and Michael Keaton is in a movie coming out in January 7th called "White Noise" Doesn't look too good, IMO
bob_barron Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 I'm always skeptical about BOM's marketing cost since I think they base it on averages and other movies and not how much it actually cost. I remember their marketing cost for other movies was unusually high. It's Macdonald btw
NYU Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 So when did Sylvester Stallone's career completely fall apart? Was it with "Stop or My Mom Will Shoot!"? I mean, the never-ending sequels of "Rocky" and "Rambo" weren't great or anything, but they weren't nearly as brutal as "Stop!" After winning the Oscar for his role in "La Vita e Bella", Roberto Benigni was getting a good deal of attention from American audiences. Of course, his fame just completely plummeted after following that up with "Pinocchio". "Catwoman" could be the bomb that ends Halle Berry's career prematurely. We'll have to wait and see on that one. To the person who suggested Colin Farrell before, I don't think "Alexander" bombing will hurt him too much. Oliver Stone seems to be getting the brunt of the blame for that one. But if Farrell doesn't come up with a hit on his own soon, his marketability will be shot. The movies where he doesn't get top billing - S.W.A.T., Daredevil, Minority Report - do wind up going over $100 million, but the movies he DOES get top billing in either bomb or struggle to make it over the budget. Not good. But, as someone said before: History might show there could be no better example of this trend than Ben Affleck with "Gigli." The guy puts out one awful movie with his girlfriend, and the entire country lashes out at him. His career really shows no signs of improving at this point - didn't "Surviving Christmas" with Gandolfini only wind up making around $11 milion? Terrible....
Ravenbomb Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 aside from Scary Movie 3, Leslie Nielsen's career died real quick after 2001: A Space Travesty. God, that movie sucked hard.
Madmartigan21 Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 I've never even seen the movie. I think a movie making a 24 million dollar profit off domestic grosses alone qualifies it as a hit whether it sucked or not Just because a movie is succesful doesn't make it a hit. Assuming your numbers for Open Range are correct, I'm sure eveyone involved was pleased by the financial results. I'm also sure that none of them would call it a hit. A hit is always a succesful movie. However, a successful movie isn't neccessarily a hit.

bob_barron Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 I think people would call Open Range a hit since I don't think the movie was expected to make that much money. Considering all the horrible stuff that was written about Master of Disguise- I'd call it a hit
Sideburnious Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 aside from Scary Movie 3, Leslie Nielsen's career died real quick after 2001: A Space Travesty. God, that movie sucked hard. Yeah I saw that movie dubbed in turkish, it made the expierience even worse. I think the kid from the sixth sense (Haley Joel Osment) career has sort of hit a rock. He got all that publicity from the Sixth Sense and other than that only has A.I to show for it. Also Macaulay Culkin bombed big. Outside of the recent Saved! (which I dont know was a hit or not) the last thing he did of note was the Page Master and that pretty much died. EDIT: whoops, forgot about richie rich, but yeah same deal, his career pretty much died for 10years after that
Guest LooneyTune Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 Batman & Robin must hold the record for most amount of career-fuckings. Whatever happend to Joe Pesci? Seemed like he disappeared after 8 Heads in a Duffle Bag.
Sideburnious Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 He was in Lethal Weapon 4....and then nothing after that. Yeah, I think 8 heads finished him off a bit.
2GOLD Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 Joe retired from acting to spend time with his children and be a father. He did all he wanted to do in his career and he saved enough money where he wouldn't have to do anymore. Joe's career didn't die, he just stopped it.
Guest LooneyTune Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 Phew... 8HIADB wasn't too bad, but outside of his character and assaulting David Spade and the other guy, nothing stood out. Glad to know doing a bad movie didn't kill his acting career. I'll always remember 1 phrase... "They fuck you at the drive-thru!"
kkktookmybabyaway Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 Yeah, I liked Lethal Weapon 4 more than 2 or 3. I thought Jet Li was a good villain in the 4th. The third one was my favorite, and I liked the fourth film, but it seemed like the actualy crime being committed was a backstory to Riggs being a dad, among other things...
