Not much chage this week. Blade Trinity is out of the top 12, while The Incredibles is back in. And National Treasure jumped up from 11 last week to 6 this week.

 

Aviator was only on about 1,700 screens. Almost 2,000 less than Fockers and Snickets. Phantom was also on just over 600 screens.

All time US boxoffice gross: The Incredibles is now #30, in between Monsters Inc and Batman.

I saw Fockers yesterday.

 

I wasn't too happy. Had some funny moments, but it felt like the movie was either geared towards 50 year olds or 7 year olds at different times...never really anything in between.

Léon: The Professional and Garden State are both very good movies starring Natalie Portman. Léon is one of my favorite movies and is definitely worth checking out.

Oh, that's not bad. I went to the 10 am showing today and there was only one other person in the theater with me, hence the pessimism.

Jude is good in just about everything he is in.

 

And Portman's acting kind of bugged me in the beginning of the film, but her performance picked up big time.

Back to Closer for just a second. I don't know about everyone else, but to me, Clive Owen just stole the show. I bet he gets a supporting nomination.

Owen carried the movie, imo. He made me forget my glaring hatred for Julia Roberts for almost the entire movie, which is a pretty big achievement.

 

Jude Law was good, but I think Owen was the better male in the film.

A lot should be said about The Aviator as well. Leo was just perfect in the role, just perfect. This is really the first film that he has starred in that I didn't look at him a single time as just a "baby faced actor".

 

However, while Leo did a great job, Cate Blanchett just went beyond the call of duty with her portrayal of Katharine Hepburn. I think a best actress nomination might be in store for her.

 

Everyone was really good in the film though, I can't find a bad thing to say about any of the performances. Also, even though the film is quite long, it didn't feel that way to me for a second. Usually when I go into films with such a long running time, I check my watch at least once. I didn't do so a single time while watching this one.

 

The only bad thing I could possibly say about the film is that at times, it felt a bit choppy, but that should be expected when dealing with a film on such a subject matter though. How exactly do you fit the life of Howard Hughes into a single film? You simply can't do it, and even with what we have here we are dealing with only a small part of his life, there is so much more to be told.

 

Let me say one more positive thing about the film though:

 

I've heard many say that many scenes went on for too long, and most of those scenes that people like to mention are the scenes that display his obsessions with hand washing, repeating words, and other scenes dealing with things like that. I can't agree with ANYONE who says they went on for too long. To me, they were just perfect. The reasoning behind having them go on for so long was to allow the viewer to experience just a bit of the frustration that the man himself was going through. Not only could you see it in his eyes, in his face, and in his voice, but you as a viewer could, for a minute, feel the frustration of not being able to get over that hump. As a viewer, you could sense and feel just a bit of his frustration and his helplessness. I loved how the scenes showcaseing his neurosis went on for so long. I especially loved how they presented it when he was in a crowd of people and reporters, with the cameras going off.

 

Anyone who has OCD, or has ever went through anything like that before, can understand what it's like. I'd have to say that this film did one of the best jobs, if not THE best job, at relaying to the viewer what life can be like for someone like Hughes, and others with similar conditions.

 

I know what it's like to feel that exact same way in a crowd of people. I know what it's like to feel as if you must repeat the same words over and over again, I've been through all of that (although not to the same extreme).

 

Overall, I'd give the film a rating of about 9.0 or so, and would be in my top five or so films of the year without my even needing to think about it.

I wasn't too happy. Had some funny moments, but it felt like the movie was either geared towards 50 year olds or 7 year olds at different times...never really anything in between.

I saw it last week, and while it was funny, it wasn't as funny as the original.

My main problem was that most of the jokes seemed "telegraphed" and they also seemed really forced.

 

The crazy thing is that its made more money in 12 days than Meet the Parents did in its entire US release.

Closer was amazing. Everyone owes it to themselves to see tis confusing piece of art. It really makes you think, and it may take more than one viewing to really grasp a true opinion on all of it. It took me 2 times
