The Misfits!

Recommended Posts

Guest Deadbolt

The Misfits are severly underrated and ignored in favor of modern music and horrible bands like Rancid and Agnostic Front.

So, are there any other Misfits fans in here?

I can't tell. Is this a gimmick poster, or what?

If he was a gimmick poster, don't you think his name would be something like Danzig4Life, or GlennRulz!@#!@

Or he could just combine it all to make DanzigRulz4life, right? :P I've seen a lot of the posts he's made so far, and assumed he was a gimmick poster or troll for a while.

That being said...uh, yeah, The Misfits are very good, and have had more than enough exposure. I don't believe they've been overlooked for bands like Rancid, I believe their influence has been more than documented.

The Misfits are indeed an awesome band. I saw them play live at Warped Tour 2001 (yeah, I know it wasn't the 'real' Misfits, but I'll take what I can get) and put on a fantastic live show. It didn't hurt that, in addition to their hits, they covered 3-4 Ramones classics since the show took place not too long after Joey passed.

I have always really liked Rancid as well, though...

There's about eight songs from the Danzig era I like, everything else is awful.

Where Eagles Dare I always thought was one of the best punk songs ever. And for that matter, most of the Danzig era was good stuff. I stopped paying attention after that.

Rancid is not horrible by the way. Out Come the Wolves is a mighty strong album, as are most of the rest.

Yes, the Danzig-era Misfits are good ... and, Glenn is doing a whole series of shows with Doyle, playing Misfits songs, on the upcoming Danzig tour.

Having said that, though, this poster lost all credibility to me when he referred to AF as either modern music and/or a horrible band. Besides that, calling the Misfits underrated is a farce. It's not like they're some underground, unknown punk band ... in fact, if anything, they're overrated.

Samhain >>>>> The Misfits

I'm a big fan of theirs, but I don't think they're that underrated. They didn't play a style that was ever that popular. Their fan base is about as big as you can expect for a band that was largely ignored in their time and hasn't put out an album in 20 years. I hear tons of bands saying how infuential they were, so I think they get about what credit they deserve.

You know I was gonna make a joke like that, but I avoided it, haha.

Uh, it's been a lot less then that.

Unless you're only counting Danzig-Era Misfits as THE Misfits, in which case it's hard to argue.

But Famous Monsters came out what? 2-3 years ago?

I only asked if it was a gimmick poster because of the use of the word "underrated." Kids will not SHUT UP about the Misfits, and they're probably up there with Zeppelin, Marley and Nirvana as the most overrated (especially by highschoolers) bands of all time. Of course, that's not to say that I don't like all of these artists, but nonetheless, the Misfits logo is everywhere, and they get more than enough exposure and "props" for their influence on current "punk" bands. Hell, I saw not one but two kids wearing Misfits shirts today, and the day's only half over.

Anyway, yes... there's probably about 2 good songs post-Danzig... about three good solo Danzig songs (for the most part he're terrible, and I sort of just hate Danzig as a human)... and as for the band in their prime, I'd say there's an essential album for all punk fans, but aside from that, it just really depends how crazy you are about them. There are a bundle of classic songs in there, but for the most part, I've always found them a little lacking in the area of listening to more than three songs in a row. I have always sort of kind of wanted to pick up that giant coffin-shaped box set though. Simply because it's shaped like a coffin.

I like the Misfits a lot...some of the songs are a little bit too weird or gimmicky, but the straight up punk songs are great. I like a few of their newer songs ("Famous Monsters" is an underrated album, IMO...I really dig "Saturday Night" and "Scream" from that album).

Danzig is good in his own right...of course "Mother" is a classic, and he had a couple other cool songs like "Twist of Cain" and "Sistinas" as well. Anyone ever see that video of him getting punched out backstage though? Kind of loses his credibility after that incident.

I saw them on the Warped Tour back in 2001 as well...FYI, Marky Ramone was on drums, along with Robo and Dez from Black Flag. Jerry Only was the only original Misfit actually playing, but it was still a cool set they performed.

The avatar says it all, as will the ink I'm going to get done by year's end (the Fiend with 138 on the forehead).

The Misfits? Underrated? Hell no. They get the amount of credit they deserve, but I really don't see how they're OVERRATED. They wrote catchy songs that were VERY heavy for their time period, and gained a cult following that only increased when the members of said cult following began forming their own bands and sporting their merchandise onstage and pimping how much they love the band in interviews. It's one of those things that you either get, or don't get.

It's been my experience that most of the people that call themselves Misfits fans are in the "don't get" category. There was a kid I went to high school with that we called Blinky because he had a nervous twitch that caused him to blink a lot (yes, so original), and he'd wear a Misfits shirt once or twice a week. When asked what his favorite song was, he'd say "Last Caress." When asked what album it was off of, he'd stop and stare at us (well, as good as you can stare while constantly blinking). Forgiveable, because it's been on a few albums. We asked him about other Misfits songs, and he couldn't name one. He was wearing the shirt because most of his friends were into punk and pop/punk and emo, and he wanted to fit in.

So yeah. End of rant. I predict the next IDRM post will be him calling me a liar.

Well I don't think you're a liar but I certainly think you'll regret that ink you'll get within a few years. Anyway I'm not quite a "fiend" but a fan.

I totally agree with you. One of the reasons why Misfits shirts are so prevalent with the high school is that the Fiend skull is fashionable for some reason. I read in some article/interview that the Misfits make more off of merch than touring/records.

And in 2001, they had two original misfits...Jerry and Robo, who was a drummer for a while towards the end of their original run.

And Jerry wasn't even The Misfits' first bassist. Funny, eh?

And InsanityMan, it's something of a joke to IDRM, because I'd post a response with a story from my life, and he'd call me a liar either because it contradicts something else I'd said, or because it didn't seem likely to happen.
