Michael Powell to step down 3 years early

Recommended Posts

Oh, the FCC guy.

If anyone REALLY believes this is good news then you might be a touch crazy. Now the FCC will just find someone worse than Powell who will look to ban bad language and partial nudity from cable as well as network television.

"What is this show??? ARE THEY DANCING?!?!?!"

"It's a music video Mr. Ashcroft...it's CMT."

"FINE THEM! DANCING WILL NOT BE SHOWN!"

Now if we can only get rid of that censorship organization that creates all the complaints. I remember visiting their site once, they had a pre-made complaint form to the FCC so all you had to do was type your name in and click Send and you'd automatically complain about something, regardless of whether you actually have seen it.

Fines for indecent programming exceeded $7.7 million last year, a huge increase from the $48,000 imposed the year before Powell became chairman. Powell has praised the record fines, saying the commission was "wielding our sword" to protect children and viewers who object to racy programming.

Isn't getting rid of them, paramount to censorship?

No, it's a subversive, insidious tyrany imposed upon people because they are considered incapable of making an informed choice. It is thought and behaviour manipulation.

White House spokeswoman Erin Healy praised Powell for a "strong commitment to expand the reach of new communications technologies and services" that promoted President Bush (news - web sites)'s goal of affordable high-speed Internet access for all Americans by 2007.

I am laughing my ass off right now. There is no way that everyone in America will have access to High Speed internet by 2007, and the definition of affordable is probably off too. The main players in high speed access are Cable and Telephone companies with DSL. Cable is limited to the areas served by cable and DSL is limited in how far you are away from the main hubs. I can't get either where I live, and Im willing to bet there are millions of people just like me who can't either. The problem with Cable is the cable companies themselves, who see no need to put the money out to expand their lines to serve two or three people out in the sticks. DSL's problem is rooted in the technology and the max distances wont change in 2 years.

Oh..but this was about Powell resigning....well, whoever replaces him will be worse.

Stern probably had a holiday on his show this morning.

I'm sure he took credit for Powell leaving, seeing as he generally exaggerates his own worth in an industry in which he ceased to be relevant years ago.

Uh oh.

Much like "nazi", I think "tyranny" may become the new word that gets over- and improperly used.

Me too, but for different reasons. I love hearing how America supposedly sucks, but yet while people in other countries are living day-to-day in poverty, we are trying to give everyone here high-speed Internet access...

Here's the man who should be the one to tell you what you can and can't see on your television. Don't argue with his judgement, because he is a pillar of moral clarity:

OReilly_Bill.jpg

"See, now here's what I'm going to do to CBS....okay......for the Janet Jackson 'nip-slip.' I'd fine them. That's what I'd do.....okay. I'd fine them. Because the far-left bomb-throwers, and the ACLU - they think that thing is perfectly fine. They don't have a problem with Janet Jackson exposing her breasts all over the place where your children could see them.

That's why my new book, 'Who's Looking Out For You For Kids, is so important.

BTW, Jobber, for recommending me, I'm going to be giving you a free subscription to The Factor website. Stay on the line."

I wonder if the settlement included a free O'Reilly Factor windbreaker. Seriously. Who could possibly wear Bill O'Reilly merchandise in public? Now I may be wearing my Crossfire "Coming From The Right" boxer shorts, but that's different.

It was a tough call between that pair or the ones with Begala and Carville on them that said "two left-leaning nuts"
