The NFL Offseason/Pre-Draft Thread

Guest Failed Mascot

last week.

Seriously though, the Pats don't have the cap space for Charles Woodson and they just traded a third round pick for Duane Starks. That means they have Duane Starks, Tyrone Poole, Asante Samuel, and Randall Gay. They seem to be set at the CB position but if they feel they aren't then they could still draft one early.

Not to mention Charles Woodson doesn't fit what the team looks for in a player.

Dillon was a hard worker that wanted nothing more than a championship.

Woodson is all about money and himself.

The Cinci media really fucked over Corey Dillon. I mean at one point his linemen refused to block for him because he called them out in a huddle. Wouldn't you be disgruntled? The media didn't care about that though and they painted Dillon as the bad guy.

Not to mention the Pats are supposedly $3.5mill under the cap. How does he fit?

It wasn't just the Cincinnati media that said that about Dillon during his last few years in Cincy. You probably even bitched about him, but now he's your buddy that was screwed over.

I laughed over it all.

You want me to ask the damn local sports people about this? If it means that much to you all I'll call them and ask this afternoon.

I mean the guy who DID play both ways and did whatever the team asked of him. The fact that he did it, and did it well, while hating it should give him even more props.

I can't think of many guys who would be willing to do all that for his team. I can't think of any who would do it as well as he did.

But I guess since he stated that he hated it AFTER the season yet shut up and did twice of what was expected of him during the season means he isn't the Pats kinda player.

If you honestly are criticizing him for not being happy with it, and that he should have been, then maybe Sapp was right. Sure, it's an exaggeration in a sport where people get paid MILLIONS, but the point is you're pushing a guy to do more than he should and he isn't happy about it, it's okay to cut him because he doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. BAH.

For the life of me, I still don't understand why Troy Brown's coverage wasn't tested throughout the playoffs..

Well, Belichick's not stupid; he always had a safety helping Brown out in coverage, because if Troy was man-to-man against someone, he probably would have gotten lit the fuck up every time.

As previously stated, Brown was going to count for $5 million against the cap. He didn't want to play D anymore, and if he stayed, he would have been at best the 3rd receiver (the 4th if either Patten stayed, or they got someone like Mason). If you're over the cap and this guy would count for $5 million in 2005, wouldn't YOU try to knock a little money off? Belichick just does not get "attached" to guys; if you don't fit into the program any more, you won't be on his team.

Oh, I woulda cut him too, but it's just that Platypus made him sound like one of those "me" players because he hated doing something that he did anyway, something that 95% of the players in the league wouldn't do and probably do as well as he did.

The Pats aren't a family team, like everyone paints them out to be. They're just a really well-managed team. I think it's impossible to be well-managed and not hurt a few feelings.

You mean the guy who said (after the season) that he didn't want to play both ways and hated doing so?

I'm not exactly sure how this = me saying Troy Brown is a "me" player. I have NEVER said that. I don't think that at all. What I do think is that he's a little pussy for bitching about it. Back in the day everyone played both ways, and on special teams, and got their own water, and taped themselves up (with Sears catalogs on their shins). Oh boo fucking hoo, you had to play some defense, quit whining.

Okay you called him a whiner, which is essentially a "me" player, but that's just semantics. Forget I said that.

Regardless, players don't play both ways TODAY. He did, and was a makeshift CB against real W.R You can judge him based on the fact that he did what his team wanted him to do and did it for most of the season and playoffs, or you could judge based on the fact that he didn't like it and made a statement about it later. I think it's kinda lame to pick on him for a statement when his actions reflect much more importantly on his character, and on the type of player that he is.

I'm a Pats fan and even I'm pissed about what happened with Troy Brown. I don't blame him for not liking to play defense and it's not like he would to have done it again.

Troy got screwed. There is no two ways about it. It's not right but it's not like New England had a choice either. It's how the cap works, you either cut the big contracts or you take them and realize you don't have anyone you can sign.

What's increasing BS to me is Troy isn't back on the Pats. I don't give a damn if he would be the fourth receiver who only played special teams.

I think it's fucked up that the man played both sides of the ball (not some defensive guy lining up for a trick play either) and helped them win a Super Bowl, but he doesn't get rewarded for it. In this day and age, you have to watch LOTS of film and attend practices and I imagine that Troy Brown had to do twice as much since he was expected to play both sides of the ball without getting embarrassed. If anything, take away the money from the people that he was subbing for while he was playing defense if you want to cut costs.

Yes, cause weakening the team on a whole just because Troy Brown did extra makes great sense. When you play with a Salary Cap shit like this happens but it still keeps the league more balanced. Troy Brown could be coming back at a reduced cost, he could sign elsewhere or he could go the third route. He's been thinking of retiring now.

Either way he can take a few years off and come back as a WR coach.

Browns sign Cosey Coleman.

I'm really happy with Phil Savage as the new GM. A few months on the job and he has the offensive line in the best shape it's been since the Browns came back.

I wonder if York is stupid enough to take Woodson and give the Raiders the 1st pick of the draft. That'd be almost too epic.

They did more than just agree in principal. According to Rotoworld...

Vikings signed cornerback Fred Smoot, formerly of the Redskins, to six-year, $35 million contract.

He earned a $10.8 million signing bonus, fair value in this market. Smoot is not a superior tackler, but combined with Antoine Winfield, the Vikings now have one of the better cornerback tandems in the league.

There's also an article on ESPN.com about it. Hey, the Vikings got a defense now. I'll laugh if they make it to the Superbowl next season while The Raiders are cellar-dwellers.

What Vern said.

$10 million is a high asking price for a above-average cornerback, especially when it involves losing a franchise quarterback, the ability to shore up the offensive line with the remaining money, and the future problems taking on a player who's only contracted for one year.
