MrRant 0 Report post Posted January 30, 2005 ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Hawks were stranded on their chartered plane for seven hours after a winter storm paralyzed the city's airport, preventing the team from making its scheduled flight to Memphis for Saturday night's game against the Grizzlies. The Hawks left for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport immediately after their 106-96 loss to the Miami Heat on Friday night. They didn't get there quick enough. The storm already was sweeping through Atlanta with freezing rain and sleet, forcing the cancellation of hundreds of flights. The Hawks wound up being stranded on their chartered jet from 11 p.m. until 6 a.m. Saturday, when it became apparent they wouldn't be able to get out anytime soon. All hotels around the airport were booked up, so the players and staff were taken by vans to a downtown hotel -- about 10 miles away -- to await word on the fate of their game in Memphis. Team spokesman Arthur Triche said the Hawks were in discussions with the league about whether to postpone the game. As of late morning, only one runway at Hartsfield-Jackson was open. With more freezing rain and sleet predicted for Saturday, officials weren't sure when they would be able to open another of the airport's four runways. "At this point, we don't know if we're going to play," Triche said. "We were sitting on the plane, sitting through the de-icing process. When they were finally done, they wouldn't let us take off." Freezing rain and sleet coated Atlanta streets with at least a quarter-inch of ice, causing havoc at one of the world's busiest airports and shutting down parts of every interstate highway in the metro area. At least two traffic deaths were blamed on the wintry weather. The storm system swept into Georgia from the Midwest and continued its push into the Carolinas. Whoops. Wrong NBA thread. Guest Mindless_Aggression Report post Posted January 31, 2005 Decent game, Miami's biggest lead was in the 10 to 12 point region, they never really blew the doors off, but always seemed firmly in control. Shaq and Yao both had foul trouble and didn't really play that much against one another, but Yao got the better of that whole thing overall. Bob Sura continues to be a very good player who no one realizes is a very good player as well. Oh and Wade had 20 plus points in the second half. The Lakers have a tough last month and three more games against the Spurs, but they play a lot of games against the East as well. They're doing an admirable job without Kobe, as well. Minnesota is only 7 games out of first, it's not hard to believe that they could possibly end up with the division again in the end. I think Memphis' momentum under Fratello will continue long enough to get them back in, even if not the same success they had last year. As for Houston, they've been pretty inconsistent all year, and, judging by their remaining schedule, I don't see their fortunes improving. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Paul Gasol is out like 4 weeks which might put them down for a rough month. And it's tough the way they play with so many swingmen in the rotaton just trying to ride the hot hand, will that work without an inside presence? One game it's Bonzi Wells, the next it's Mike Miller, then it's James Posey. I don't entirely trust such an up and down group, they can easily hit the skids. I like Jason Williams though, it's an effective team and tough to write them off. I won't bet against Houston passing them. Houston's #9 right now, but they've got the better divisional record and are only one game behind Memphis, the 6 seed. Plus, they've had major roster turnover, while Memphis has virtually the same exact team they had last year, and the coaching change has been a non-factor on the surface except for Battier getting a slight bump in minutes. Because Houston's been on TV all the fucking time this season I've seen them play and they're a much better team now than they were in November. Yao still disapears for stretches, but McGrady looks more comfortable, Howard looks more comfortable, and Sura gives them a ton of energy. LA I consider a virtual lock, even with Kobe hurt. They have a surprising ammount of depth, Rudy T is a great coach, and Odom and Atkins can handle the on-court leadership for now. No fucking way KG doesn't make the playoffs. They don't even need Spree to do shit. Cassell came in rusty off the hip thing, then he hurt his ankle or some shit, as soon as he gets in a groove they'll be fine, and if he doesn't, they'll still be in. I think the East is a lot tougher to call at this point. Will the Bulls make it? Can the Wiz get homecourt? Will the winner of the Atlantic have a better record than the Clippers? Nobody knows!!! I don't think that will happen now and I see them as a lock for the playoffs barring something disatrous. However I don't think the winning will carry over to next season. As good as they're playing it still looks like Ray Allen is unhappy and wants out. Mo Cheeks has been completely undermined by the front office here and you can't expect him to control that team when Miles can piss and shit all over his authority and get a slap on the wrist for it. And Kyle Korver hitting a fade away jumper with 6 tics left to win. I think that the Sixers could come together nicely and make some noise in the East. Road losses to Milwaukee (without Mason), Toronto, Charlotte, Chicago (before the winning streak),LA Lakers (without Kobe), Indiana (without half the roster). There's noticable improvement all around from last year, but especially on offense. The bench is also much deeper than last year. Padgett, Barry, and Mutombo have been pretty good off the bench. I sitll wouldn't bet against them, but Seattle can very much beat San Antonio in a 7 game series. If nothing else, we're seeing now that when he has both oars in the water, Artest is just as valuable to Pacers as O'Neal is, if not even moreso. That team just cannot win without Tinsley and it's understandable, he was becoming a 20 point, 7 assist 5 rebound guy every night there for awhile. The Bulls schedule has indeed been very odd this year. Their next game is at Miami on Saturday and I do believe that will be on WGN.
