BEST SELLING WWE DVDS: ROB VAN DAM'S DVD SELLS HUGE IN FIRST WEEK; ECW, ANDRE THE GIANT STILL SELLING STRONG

by Mike Johnson @ 3:00:00 PM on 2/23/2005

WWE's newest DVD Rob Van Dam: One of A Kind moved 7,547 copies in its first official week of release on the retail market. The total moved is 7,711 if you include copies that were sold before the title's official street date. The title sold 3,469 copies via Internet retailers and 2,588 via major retailers (FYE, Best Buy, etc.) The remaining copies were sold via smaller outlets.

While RVD is the Whole Fn' DVD this week, The Rise and Fall of ECW moved another 2,370 copies. That brings the title up to 102, 263 sold since its initial release last year. It will be interesting to chart the continued movement of the title now that the Rob Van Dam DVD is available and basically appeals to the same audience.

The legendary Andre the Giant is also showing staying power in his second week on the Videoscan charts, moving 2,333 copies on his discounted ($6.99-$9.99) title.

The complete top ten sales for the last week:

*Rob Van Dam: One of A Kind -- 7,547 copies

*The Rise and Fall of ECW -- 2,370 copies

*Andre the Giant: Larger Than Life -- 2,333 copies

*Best of the WWE Intercontinental Championship -- 1,281 copies

*Wrestlemania XX -- 727 copies

*Survivor Series 2004 -- 675 copies

*Armaggedon 2004 -- 658 copies

*History of Wrestlemania -- 548 copies

*Taboo Tuesday -- 468 copies

*Shawn Michaels: The Boyhood Dream --448 copies

Are those numbers that the RVD DVD sold actually considered huge? I mean, good for him and all, but I'd like to compare his numbers with what Eddie or Benoit moved. Could someone please post that info to compare it? Good sales on the DVD must certainly be considered a testament to RVD's popularity that WWE cannot ignore.

What did the ECW DVD do in its first week? I think it did quite a bit more than the RVD one, but that would stand to reason since the Van Dam DVD basically appeals to a portion of that audience.

This might sound goofy but I think RVD's demeanor of not giving a shit has kept him oddly over. As in "Job me out, bitch...I'll still be over" or something like that. Van Dam will always have a following since he doesn't bullshit and doesn't bow down to the bookers (whereas Jericho did in exchange for a title reign...look where he is now).

I would like to see what the Eddie and Benoit DVDs did as well. I figure the Flair one did better but then that is a huge 20+ year retrospective.

Hot selling DVD....crowd chants during the main event for no apparent reason....it's RIGHT THERE for you Vince!

When Van Dam comes back, he NEEDS to be in the WWE title picture, if for no other reason than because he is versatile. He can fight heavyweights like Taker (actually got a good an entertaing match out of him a couple years ago on raw), mat technicians like Angle, and even cruiserweights like Mysterio convincingly; versatility is what makes a champion appealing if only because one doesn't have to retread the same main event matches against the same wrestlers (also, title matches (like barbed wire steel cage) wouldn't need to have gimmicks to be interesting (because the big show sucks). Lack of versatility in the types of people a wrestler can wrestle against is one of the main problems I see with the WWE product today; this leads to the same matches. Most people forget when Brock Lesnar first came up as the unstoppable monster, the only wrstlker he had problems with/couldn't beat cleanly (even lost i think) was to Van Dam...and those were entertaing matches that made both look good). Obviously, the major problem I suppose is his skills on the mic. But if you take the whole 420/Laid back stoner thing and amp it up, I think it could become huge (he has a subtle charisma in his backstage promos). Maybe make him heel and have a manager/mouthpiece to help. What do you guys think?

Rob Van Dam: One of A Kind moved another 4,098 copies in its first official week of release on the retail market. The total moved is 11,809 which is an amazing number for two weeks on the market. What's tremendous about the sales is that with RVD out of action, there has been no real marketing for the DVD set at all, so once again, fans are showing WWE what they want by purchasing what they see as a quality item, despite whether WWE is marketing it strongly or not.

Yeah, but wasn't Hogan's DVD at the time the best seller ever? They can still milk another Hogan DVD easily.

This was posted about a week after the ECW DVD was released, so the numbers need adjusting for these last couple of months. Also I think these are strictly 2004 sales only, so Steel Cage and Flair's sets may have higher numbers:

Wrestlemania XX: 101,145 copes

Monday Night War: 80,157 copies

Mick Foley’s Greatest Hits & Misses: 49,784

Ultimate Ric Flair Collection: 41,040

Hard Knocks - Chris Benoit Story: 30,007

The Undertaker - He Buries The Alive: 26,638

John Cena - Wordlife: 23,388

Rise and Fall of ECW: 22,113

Bloodbath - Steel Cage: 21, 106

Survivor Series 2003: 20,907

Eddie Guerrero: 10,000 aprox.

Correct - those are only 2004 sales.

ECW recently passed Flair for the highest-selling DVD in company history.

Flair's set is no doubt 100,000+ but WMXX's number's may be higher.

The historic value likely was the most appealing factor.

yea but its too bad they edited it to hell: themes, the reaction to brock-berg, ultimo dragons slip and slide 04, etc

I bought the dvd cuz it was on sale and figured I should have a dvd copy (as well as wanting a dvd version of that mania of wm special) but my live recorded vhs version aint too shabby. probably should trasfer that to dvd. someday.

Whoa. So RVD's DVD sold more than Eddie's? That's a bit shocking, to be honest.

I find it more shocking that RVD's dvd has done so well without any promotion at all.

well apparantly there are more smarks out there than wwe would like to admit. and besides us hardcores, Id assume that many non smarks would buy it if they saw it in a store in in one of the wwe mags or the few comercials that hyped it.

the ecw dvd was not highly promoted outside of the commercials and it did great but thats not really shocking

That's promotion. I've literally seen only one RVD commercial. I saw at least 3 every Raw/Smackdown when the ECW DVD came out.
