2GOLD Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 Someone said on the imdb message board that on the new Bambi DVD coming out, there is a preview for a Bambi sequel. Can anyone confirm this? Yup, a direct-to-dvd release. Disney does this all the time, so I'm not one bit surprised. I think it's titled, "Bambi and the Great Prince of the Forest"
2GOLD Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 Yes, I was right. Premise: The new film is a 'midquel', the story taking place in the middle of the first Bambi movie. It is your basic teenage angst tale, dealing with Bambi coping with his Father, the Great Prince, and his finding of a new mate while an orphaned Bambi comes to terms with his Mother's death. -- Animated News That's right boys and girls, Bambi was too damn fun! WE MUST SEE A DEER SAD! We must see the story of a single father DEER and how Bambi will handle when his father finds a new mate. That's right, it's a freaking "Daddy gets new mate, Bambi sad" story.
Guest JMA Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 Has there ever been a GOOD direct-to-DVD sequel? Ever?
Downhome Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 Was The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride DTV? If so, that one is OK. It was not necessary, but it was ok.
Guest El Satanico Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 I'm sure there's some decent DTV horror sequels.
Ravenbomb Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 Damn. I was hoping it would be that his mom comes back from the dead and ruins everybody's shit as a zombie deer, with lazers coming out of her antlers
Guest El Satanico Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 a zombie deer, with lazers coming out of her antlers You just ruined the big secret in Resident Evil 4
Tawren Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 'Midquel' is the greatest word ever. A++
Downhome Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 If we're not just talking DISNEY DTV sequels, then I could think of more than a couple.
Placebo Effect Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 Was The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride DTV? If so, that one is OK. It was not necessary, but it was ok. Indeed it was.
Placebo Effect Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 Has there ever been a GOOD direct-to-DVD sequel? Ever? Beyond Re-Animinator was very cool, although that can be defined as more of a labor of love rather than a cash-in like most DTV sequels are. I dug Hellraiser: Inferno, as did many horror reviewers. Sniper 2 & 3, when you consider the first one's shortcomings, aren't bad. Nothing great, though. Leprechaun Back 2 Tha Hood was good fun, but not necessarily a GOOD movie. In general, yes, direct-to-video sequels are terrible.

Beyond Re-Animinator was very cool, although that can be defined as more of a labor of love rather than a cash-in like most DTV sequels are. I forgot about the Re-Animator films. Jeffrey Combs is the man. In general, yes, direct-to-video sequels are terrible. Indeed. It's like they're not even trying on the majority of them.
DerangedHermit Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 Has there ever been a GOOD direct-to-DVD sequel? Ever? For Disney? The only decent one I can remember is Aladdin 2: The Return of Jafar....
Slayer Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 Now, I think with the exception of Snow White and Pinnochio, Disney's sequelized every one of their animated movies. I can't wait for Song of the South II, personally

Slayer Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 I wouldn't blame the animators. Marketing execs say "Since we're at a loss for new ideas, what old movie can we sequelize?" and then hand the orders down from there
starvenger Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 Has there ever been a GOOD direct-to-DVD sequel? Ever? I think Toy Story 2 was originally intended to be an OAV. And of the ones that Disney actually did in-house, Mulan II is actually supposed to be decent.
ChrisMWaters Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 Now, I think with the exception of Snow White and Pinnochio, Disney's sequelized every one of their animated movies. Alice in Wonderland. Though, they have an actual story to fall back on for a sequel to that. They didn't even scratch the Wonderland surface, IIRC.
Youth N Asia Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 Disney poops on everything good they've done with direct to video sequels. The 2nd and 3rd Aladins were rancid, looked like Saturday morning cartoon animation. And The Prophecy 2 and 3 were straight to video and great
Skywarp! Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 "Toy Story 2" was indeed supposed to be DTV, but somewhere in the script process they realized they had some theatrical release material on their hands. I'm not that concerned with Disney's second rate DTV sequels--they are harmless cash-ins in that medium. What concerns me is when they don't have any good ideas for theatrical releases, and things like "The Jungle Book 2" and "Peter Pan 2" get bumped up to the silver screen.
Masked Man of Mystery Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 Puni Puni Poemy wasn't as good as Excel Saga, but it wasn't bad if you like Nabeshin's demented sense of humor

nl5xsk1 Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 You know, I never knew that Bambi was a male deer. I just always presumed that it was a doe. Learn something new every day. /wasted today's learning
2GOLD Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 Well, there is ONE positive about this movie. Patrick Stewart will be the voice of the GREAT PRINCE OF THE FOREST aka Daddy of Bambi. But seriously, Bambi having to deal with his dad getting a new mate? An angsty deer movie? Someone at Disney needs to put down the crack pipe.
razazteca Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 Will it have the usual extra of the disney channel stars singing the theme music?
Ted the Poster Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 Undoubtedly. Fuck this movie. If I want to see Patrick Stewart do voice work, I'll pop in my Nausicaa DVD. The Mulan sequel is mediocre. That guy may sound very similar to Eddie Murphy, but it just isn't the same.
CBright7831 Posted February 26, 2005 Author Report Posted February 26, 2005 Come to think of it, Bambi's father always came off as a scary asshole to me when I was a kid. Probably because of his tone of voice and lack of emotion (even when he announced to his son that his mother had died).
AndrewTS Posted February 26, 2005 Report Posted February 26, 2005 Has there ever been a GOOD direct-to-DVD sequel? Ever? For Disney? The only decent one I can remember is Aladdin 2: The Return of Jafar.... That one actually began the DTV glut with Disney, I believe. It was a big hit, so Disney followed up with tons more.
