Underrated PPV's

Recommended Posts

I'll start by mentioning Slamboree 1997.

Fun ME with Flair/Piper/Green vs. Hall/Nash/Syxx

Great TV title match with Regal and Ultimo

Great cruiser match with Rey and Yuji Yasuraoka

Good death match with Benoit and Meng

Good US title match with Malenko and Jarrett

The only noticably bad match was Steve McMichael vs. Reggie White, but I wasn't exactly expecting a classic there.

Who in the Sam Hell is Kevin Green?

Kevin Greene was a football player. I thought Slamboree 1997 was okay, and the main event was some goofy fun that wasn't HORRIBLE as I expected it to be.

As for me, I have ALWAYS loved Wrestlemania 9 even though so many others hate it. You have the coolest atmosphere of any WM ever, two great matches to start off the show, Razor over goofy ass Backlund in a fun squash, DOUBLE DOINKS~!, the horrible Giant Gonzalez match that's worth it for comedy value, and Luger/Perfect and Bret/Yoko matches that really aren't that bad. The ending to the show sucks, but what can ya do.

I also agree with Uncensored 1999, which was mentioned earlier. I picked this up for really cheap a few years later and was surprised that it was actually a very fun show.

I always liked WWF Ground Zero, simply for a great HBK/Taker match, a good Bret/Patriot match, and some fun stuff with Steve Austin.

WCW Souled Out 1998 is a great show that nobody has ever seen...it's really hard to get a hold of.

I've always loved Summerslam 1995. Great stuff with the ladder match, 123 Kid/Hakushi, Skip/Horowitz, and Bret trying to carry Kane/Isaac Yankem.

Summerslam 1999 is a great show you don't usually hear too much about.

I'll stop now before I go on all night.

EDIT: Uncensored 99 is pretty fun too. Not a great PPV by any means, but aside from Hogan/Flair and the NWO B&W match (which is so bad it's almost good) it's decent enough.

I agree with Uncensored '99. I think it's a good PPV.

Also Fall Brawl 2000 was pretty entertaining too.

"Mike Awesome pinned Jeff Jarrett (9:04) in a "bunkhouse" match. During this match, Jarrett hit Gary Coleman with a guitar."

That alone makes FB2K worth watching.

Judgment Day '98 was underrated, aside from the shitty main event and Rock jobbing to Henry, it had two really good midcard matches with Snow vs Mero and Venis vs Goldust.

I think the ME buried the show because, dammit, I LIKED the Christian v TAKA LH Title match.

...Forgot about that show...

Is Bill Watts the genius who banned top rope moves, resulting in some of the lamest finishes of all time?

I watched Souled Out 98 recently too (you should know, I got both shows from you), and I was somewhat disappointed. It was a good show, but I heard quite a few people play it up (esp. the Benoit/Raven match) as one of the best. I never heard a thing one way or the other about Slamboree, but I thought it was solid.

I'm also surprised to see so much love for Uncensored 99. I thought it was bad, but it really has so-bad-it's-good quality to it. People acknowledge the ME and Stevie/Vincent match were bad, but there was more. You also had a boring Booker/Scott Steiner TV title match, a boring Jericho/Saturn dog collar match, a terrible handicap match with the Cat and Sonny Oono vs. Jerry Flynn, and Nash squashing Rey.

I second Wrestlemania 9, for all the reasons stated above.

Fall Brawl 1997... isn't really underrated, but nothing is ever said about it period. All the matches, except one passed the 10 minute mark, which is a rarity in PPVs. Most matches were great, actually minus a terrible tag Stall fest (Hall/Savage v. Luger/DDP) and the only match under 10 minutes, Giant vs Norton. Jericho/Eddy, Wright/Dragon, and War Games are all bordering **** territory.

Great American Bash 1995 isn't all that bad either. Savage v. Flair is fun and Pillman v. Wright tops the card around ****... not a great PPV, but not bad.

Even the "bad" match (T & A v the Dudleys) was hardly horrendous.

And it had Bubba being a loud mofo saying great lines such as:

"I'm going to get you, you little bitch!" To Trish. I dunno, but I always find audible comments like that funny, and Bubba is the king of doing that.

Yea and after the match he puts her thru the table and yelled I got you you little bitch. and later when they load trish into an ambulance Test yells at a helper "stop trying a cheap feel"

According to Cornette, the plan was to stop the top-rope stuff --- and then reintroduce it where only the guys who are actually good at it to pull them off.

I'll agree on Ground Zero for HBK-Taker and Bret-Patriot as well. Plus, I still mark out watching the Headbangers win the Tag Titles after Austin runs in. The crowd going crazy (for Austin mostly) helps, too. This is my favorite IYH.

I thought SummerSlam '94 always gets the shaft because of the ME and Todd Pettingils insane shilling of Domino's Pizza. But it had the Bret vs. Owen cage match and a pretty solid Diesel vs. Razor Ramon. Nothing else on the card beside Taker vs. Taker was that bad.

Halloween Havoc 92': The top 3 matches suck, but the undercard was GREAT, espacially the tag title match.

WrestleWar 92': Everybody talks avout WarGames but the show had a decent opener and a decent Flamingo/Bagwell match. Plus Morton/Josh, Pillman/Zenk, and Steniers/Fujinami & Iizuka were great.

Beach Blast 92': Sting/Cactus, Ironman Match, 6 Man Tag, and Steiners/MVC.

Alundra Blayze vs Bull Nakano for the Womens Title was a pretty good match, and probably better than Diesel/Razor.

I think the card get looked on badly because of 2 matches...

Luger v. Tatanka and Undertaker v. "Undertaker". Combined, both matches were only about 20 minutes, which is not that much time for a 2 hr. 45 min PPV.

I would say that Summerslam 89 is a little underrated, because most people will never forget the horrible Zeus angle..but, aside from that, there was a great Warrior-Rude match, and a really good three way tag with the rockers and tito santana vs. the rougeaus and rick martel.. The brain-busters vs. harts opener was good as well..but the rest of the card wasn't that great. Still, you don't hear many people talk about this PPV anymore..

This is still my favourite SSlam of all, though obviously it would look at lot better in hindsight without the Undertaker/Undertaker match and buildup leaving a sour taste in the mouth.

Other underrated PPVs:

Final Four '97

No Way Out '98 - granted, on paper, it looks bad.

No Mercy '02 - noone ever talks about it, but it's decent enough.

I quite enjoyed StarrCade '89 with the four-way tournament between Muta, Sting, Flair and Luger, and the four-way tag tournament between Road Warriors, Steiner Brothers, Doom and Samoan Swat Team.

It was some of my earliest exposure to NWA/WCW and I still have a soft spot for it.

Cheers.

I personally don't understand why so many people hated that ending. I mean, sure, it was shitty for Hogan to pull a power trip like he did, but think about it: if the show had just ended with Hart or Yoko winning, it would have been the most uneventful WM ever. Hogan winning the belt was totally unexpected, popped the crowd huge, and as a seven-year-old Hogan mark, I personally loved it (although I loved a lot of dumb things back then, but you have to realize that I was in the demographic the WWF was aiming for with Hogan's win, not the "workrate fans"). While it's certainly unsurprising that so many smarks hated the ending, and considering the aftermath it might not have been such a great business move (mainly because Hogan never defended the title at house shows during that run) I don't think WWF was wrong to give Hogan the belt at Wrestlemania 9.

I have a nice little thought in my mind Hogan didn't pull a power play. Vince McMahon always tried making Wrestlemania better, either with large crowds, or surprise finishes. No one expected seeing Warrior return at the end of WM VIII, so I think it's safe to say McMahon thought having a surprise 2nd title switch to end the show would've been better than the year befores end.

Just a thought though. McMahon has been known to do stupid shit like that.

Guest Loss

Bret wasn't even told he was losing until that day. The finish was kept secret from him until the last minute, which means Hogan was most likely pitching things to Vince that resulted in him getting the belt. When he did get the belt, he immediately angered Vince by not wanting to do any house shows and wanting to leave to make another movie. He also bailed instead of putting Bret over at Summerslam because Bret was too small.
