Million Dollar Baby and Finding Neverland were both excellent. Ray was too but Ray shouldnt have won best picture, it has "mystic river syndrome", a fairly pedestrian movie of its genre buoyed to goodness by great great acting, hence the acting oscar.

Wasn't applauding the insult against M$B, per se... just the simple post of subtle and indirect 'Fuck off' I have nothing truly against M$B. I haven't seen it so I refrain from badmouthing it.

 

I am, however, most interested in your elaboration of 'too manipulative'. I do enjoy reading people's opinions of movies I like, whether bad or not.

I agree. If not for Foxx's performance, Ray probably wouldn't have received a Best Picture nomination. I still think Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind should have received a nomination instead.

GTD loved Million Dollar Baby.

 

VX you seem to be the only one who didnt like Million Dollar Baby- Ebert named #1 film of the year, the Times had it #1, it made the ReelViews top 10 and the list goes on and on.

 

About Neverland- I thought some of the scenes towards the end seemed like they had a big neon sign saying 'CRY NOW' and stuff like that bothers me. And I didn't like the way they were hush hush over the pedophilia allegations

By the way guys, bob_barron is the same gentleman who made Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban his #1 movie of 2004.

 

MDB was okay. I wouldn't have put it above the Aviator, Eternal Sunshine, or Sideways mind you, but it was decent. Not Best Picture material in my opinion, but perhaps I need to see it a second time to convince me that this was actually THAT damn good.

ESotSM is my personal favorite film of all time, period, but never in a million years would I suggest that it should have beaten M$B for Best Picture. M$B is the best american film from the past five years, if not longer...I'll have to see it a few more times to decide. Every aspect of it is outstanding, in a very deep way. The film has a ton of layers that you can't even see on one viewing alone.

 

As far as I'm concerned, the Academy nailed it tonight. Everything felt "right", like the films and the such that DESERVED to win, did actually pick up the awards.

 

Clint did an outstanding job on M$B, one of the best directing jobs of all time. Martin will pick up the award one day, but he didn't deserve it this year, he just flat out didn't. I want Martin to win one because he deserves it for the film he works on in that year, not because they are giving him a charity award...for his entire body of work. I never agree with that.

 

The only award I don't totally agree with is giving best actress to Swank. I would have voted for Winslet over Swank, just because I think Kate had to do more work, get more into the character, than Swank had to. I could have seen a number of actresses in Swank's place...but I can't say the same thing for Winslet. She owned that character, it was made for her.

 

Still, I can't totally go against Swank, she did do a great job, which is why I'm not really pissed over that one.

I was worried that MDB wasn't going to live up to Ebert's hype, since I saw it based on his blowing his load all over the film and it was an experience. It's hard for me to discuss MDB since I don't like giving away the plot points but I didn't think Clint could top Mystic River and well he proved me wrong. His next movie (Flags of our Fathers) sounds awesome

M$B is NOT a "chick boxing" film...it's an emotional, dramatic story of many different layers, that just happens to have boxing as one part of the story. You could replace the boxing with any number of sports, or many other jobs, and it still would have been a fantastic film.
