Special K 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2005 If we have an entire thread devoted to Ashley 'fuckin' Simpson, I think We can devote some love to the Rock. What rock bands do you like? Nirvana. I'm 24 from Seattle, it's a logical place to start. Pixies Ween Sleater Kinney Breeders Sonic Youth Dead Kennedys Clash Offspring Yeah Yeah Yeahs (too bad they sucked live) Violent Femmes Blonde Redhead Bjork semi-qualifies. And is a musical genius, no hyperbole. Guitar Wolf. Bad Brains. So what what non-heavy-metal band do you love?

Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2005 I like lots of rock bands. Something somewhat unusual is that I love hair metal, and the culture associated with it. Both the ultra-debauched rock star version, and the homeless vampire version you'd see bumming around Sunset Blvd. in the late 80s. There should be novels written about them, they're more interesting than punks, punks're overexposed.

nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2005 In terms of what I'd actually categorize as "rock", the only rock bands that I like are Monster Magnet and AC/DC.
Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2005 "Rock" is a catch-all term for any band with a guitar. "Rock and roll" should only be reserved for an act that encompasses elements of 50s/60s rock, ie soul and the blues. The Dirtbombs are one of the few rock and roll bands around, I think. Special K 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2005 Well, going by that definition, I just wanted to start a discussion about 'rock'. If you subcategorize everything, you'd probably only be left with the Stones and the Kinks as 'rock and roll'. (I like them too.) I would say the only band I included that I wouldn't categorize as 'rock' is Bjork. That was a bad decision.

Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2005 Black culture needs to get over Elvis Presley, because he was all he's been said to be, no matter how much they whine. Fuck Little Richard.

Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2005 I don't care about any of those dudes. They may've helped birth rock, but I have no interest in listening to them.
Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2005 As Mos Def put it, "Elvis Presley ain't got no soul...Bo Diddley is Rock and Roll." This reminds me that the song you quoted is the worst on that album.
Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2005 By the time Elvis was shooting tvs and hanging out with the Memphis Mafia, he was fucking amazing, as a persona. John Wayne is my god and Elvis Presley is my Jesus.

Hey, I never said it was good, just quoted it. It has a decent groove to it, though.
Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2005 Eh, the song is merely mediocre until the part where he starts "rocking," at which point it's totally awful.
Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2005 That said, it still isn't as bad as the worst moments on The New Danger. That whole "FUCK YOU, PLAY ME" chant? How very Durst of him!
Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2005 I thought it was "FUCK YOU, PAY ME". That would be slightly better. Also, naming Kenny G in "Rock n Roll" didn't really help his message. That's shooting a deer in a cage.
Myxamatosis 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2005 That shit was too funny. He compares Coltrane to Kenny G? For one, it puts his limited education on jazz or softer forms of music on display and two, it's just lame to say Kenny G sucks. We know it, get over it. That's shooting a deer in a cage. That's the Goodfellas quote, yeah, but, if memory serves, Mos Def changes it to "play me." Since he was complaining radio doesn't play him. Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2005 Again? Man, fuck Mos Def. Yeah, he had a couple really good albums, but his grace period is over. And the best jazz guitarists are white. He can deal with that.
