AboveAverage484 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2005 Man, the New York Dolls were fucking rock and roll, without a doubt. No fuckin' doubt, everyone around here seems to dislike them, even though Aerosmith pretty much "stole" their entire image and sound (well, except for the cross dressing). Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2005 Black culture needs to get over Elvis Presley, because he was all he's been said to be, no matter how much they whine. Fuck Little Richard. A lame southern gospel singer who couldn't act or write his own songs. He sure was. You clearly understand nothing of the mythos. The fact that he couldn't act was one of the best things about him. Ask Eddie Murphy.
5_moves_of_doom 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2005 Just as a note, it always really pisses me off when people today complain about how some pop artists suck because they "don't even fuckin' write their own songs" when many of the Elvis-esque acts of way back when didn't write their own material either. And these people typically love Elvis. "Dude he has SOUL." By the way whoever was putting Elvis down should stop trying to swim against the tide and just accept his awesomeness. Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2005 You'd look like a dork, I think, so that's ok. He's not for everyone. It's not the music though, man. That's why it doesn't matter that he didn't write his own songs. He didn't have to. That's why he was awesome.
Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2005 People actually listen to Elvis Presley? Weird.
Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2005 His stuff in the 50s was actually pretty good, and like you I don't go in for a lot of that stuff. 60s was bad. 70s was campy.
5_moves_of_doom 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2005 His stuff in the 50s was actually pretty good, and like you I don't go in for a lot of that stuff. 60s was bad. 70s was campy. Agreed. I own his first record, and I put it in from time to time and it's relatively enjoyable, but really, it's the persona that makes Elvis so awesome. I might just like '70's-campy-fat-Elvis the best because that's when his persona/icon-stature was most interesting.
Matt Young 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2005 At The Drive In What the f happened to them? I have their 2nd cd somewhere They split up. Some of the members went on to form Sparta, while the lead singer (and maybe another member or two) created The Mars Volta. The Mars Volta's new CD, Frances the Mute, is on sale for $6.99 this week at Best Buy. I got it and it's pretty good. I'd recommend picking it up. As for Elvis, I was not a fan until I went to Graceland and saw everything there, heard a lot of his songs, etc. I now enjoy Elvis. Some rock bands I like (although there are many more): The Doors Green Day Metallica Nirvana Stone Temple Pilots Led Zeppelin Allman Brothers Band Days of the New Lynyrd Skynyrd Guns N Roses Black Sabbath The Ramones
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted March 4, 2005 This might be cliche, but in terms of it..Elvis had more it than any other musician ever.

No fuckin' doubt, everyone around here seems to dislike them, even though Aerosmith pretty much "stole" their entire image and sound (well, except for the cross dressing). Really? I've never heard anyone on this board regard the Dolls with anything but giddy pleasure. And deservedly so.
Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted March 5, 2005 I remember starting a Dolls thread several months back, in which benoitrulz4life directed me to an old thread in which like a third of the people posting trashed them.
