Little Known Spin-Offs

Recommended Posts

I was thinking about this after watching a recent Happy Days episode with Mork's first appearance.

Think about some lesser known spin-offs to some popular TV shows.

Examples of what WOULDN'T count would be like Fraiser to Cheers, what WOULD would be the little known, short lived "The Tortellis"...the FIRST Cheers spin-off.

A few I can think of are:

"Gloria" (1982)

Series come from: All in the Family

About: Gloria Bunker-Stivick, after being divorced, living on her own with son Joey.

"704 Hauser" (1994)

Series come from: All In The Family

About: (from IMDB) Archie Bunker (from All in the Family) lived at 704 Hauser St., in Queens, NY. Now the house is inhabited by an African-American family. The two parents are typical working-class, blue collar liberals. The son is an arch-conservative who listens to Rush Limbaugh. He also dates a Jewish girl from down the street. Only 6 episodes of this series were made.

"Out Of The Blue" (1979)

Series come from: Happy Days

About: (from IMDB) Random was an angel out to earn his wings by doing good deeds. He went to work as a high-school teacher, and moved in with Marion and her five nephews and nieces, who were frequently getting in (and out) of trouble, thanks to Random's magic.

And a treasure I have just found out about:

"Gadget and the Gagetinies"

Series come from: Inspector Gadget

About: Just go here. http://www.tvtome.com/tvtome/servlet/ShowM...t/showid-20639/

Joanie love Chachi.

After MASH.

Never became a spin-off. But, Ralph Malph and Potsie where supposed to have a spin-off series.

Sadly, I think a watched a few episodes of that. Good god was it terrible.

What...it didn't have any of the charm of the pre Capeman (I think that was his name) Gadget eps?

Golden Palace (from Golden Girls), albeit some might call it an attempt at continuation rather than a spinoff, since it had most of the original cast

Pam had a spinoff from Martin where she worked at a record company but I can't for the death of me remember it....I know it only lasted one show.

Dave Chapplle and that white dude had the spin off from when they were on Tool Time once.

How many spinoffs of Happy Days were there, anyway? 4? 5?

Models Inc. (from Melrose Place) was a particularly bad one I remember. I also remember a really short-lived one called Billy based on the Scottish guy that replaced Howard Hesseman's character on Head of the Class.

Three

"Laverne and Shirley"

"Mork and Mindy"

"Joanie Loves Chachi"

And since HD spun off from "Love American Style", that makes all the above shows second gen spinoffs

Grady from Sandford and Son has a spinoff. He was great.

GRADY: "And who are you?"

AUNT ESTER: "Ester, Fool!"

GRADY: "Estafool? Fred didn't say nothing about an Estafool?"

Plus, CMW mentioned "Out of the Blue" at the top of the thread, so that's four.

"The Art of Being Nick". Someone came up with the brilliant idea of giving Scott Valentine's character from "Family Ties" his own sitcom. I don't think it lasted beyond the pilot.

"Living Dolls", spun off from "Who's The Boss?" and starring Leah Remini. The sitcom equivalent of "Models, Inc."

According to TVtome.com, there seems to be a debate as to whether OOTB spunoff from HD or M&M or possibly both, so I excluded it from my list

The Heights was also a spinoff but the only thing people would remember was the theme song "How do you talk to a angel?"

that is one episode I would like to see...

wasn't Mama's Family a spin-off from something? a sketch from the Mary Tyler Moore show or something? or was it a Carol Burnett show?

Well hell Simpsons was a sketch too.

And how in the FUCK was Good Times a spin off?

The Brady Bunch had a spin off. Maybe a few, I know they had the one with the daughters.

I think the Pam from Martin spinoff was just one show to see how it would do. During syndication, it comes on as Martin, not "Pam".

Different World is a Cosby spin off.

Theres a Dawson's Creek spinoff too. I forget the name though, I think it only lasted a season.

Oh, Family Matters is a spin off of Perfect Strangers.

Brady Bunch had the Brady Brides.

The Bradys doesn't really count since it was more an update of the original as was the Brady Variety Hour.

I love that you capitalise FUCK like that.

Florida Evans was Maude's housekeeper on Maude.

The episode of Martin was more of a pilot for Pam. Fox never picked it up. Just like how Brady Bunch had a pilot for a show called Kenny's Kids or something that ended up becoming Together We Stand in 1986.

The Dawson's spinoff was Young Americans- it was a summer burnoff.

Thank you for the "FUCK" comment. I try.

And yea the idea is little known comments, but on message boards where egos clash and people dont read, the idea never stays, unless the post is made by a mod or admin and bans are threatened.

And I would like for people to post little known about spinoffs. Like I didnt know Good Times was a spinoff of All in the Family. Some people might not know Family Matters was a spin off of Perfect Strangers.

McLean Stevenson decided to kill his career by leaving M*A*S*H and starring in a Diff'rent Strokes spinoff called Hello, Larry.

Almost forgot my favourite (just because of the title): Beverly Hills Buntz, a spinoff of Hill Street Blues with Dennis Franz.

Actually, Happy Days had a bunch of spin offs.

In order they were made, according to IMDB:

Laverne & Shirley

Blansky's Beauties (little info about it)

Mork and Mindy

Out of the Blue

Fonz and the Happy Days Gang (animated series)

Joannie Loves Chachi

The Mork and Mindy/Laverne & Shirley with the Fonz show. (animated series)

The Jefferson's. Especially Lionel appeared frequently, on the early days of All in the Family.

It was from The Carol Burnett Show.

Some more tidbits on All in the Family and it's spinoffs. Maude was Edith's cousin. I remember when she came to take care of Edith, who was sick, and her and Archie started arguing about FDR.

James Evans, Sr. Was called Henry when he appeared on Maude. It was still John Amos playing the rule.

Good Times is a rather questionable spin-off. Yes, Florida was Maude's maid, but Maude lived on the East coast, and Good Times takes place in the projects of Chicago. Not that a maid makes alot of money, but the Evans family was barely getting by on Good Time. Why did Florida quit, at least a steady job? To go live in the ghetto of Chicago.
