Joss Whedon confirmed for Wonder Woman movie

Thursday’s Hollywood trades made official what has been rumored for months, Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel creator and Astonishing X-Men writer Joss Whedon will write and direct a big-screen, live-action Wonder Woman feature film for Warner Bros. with Joel Silver and Leonard Goldberg producing.

 

"Wonder Woman is the most iconic female heroine of our time, but in a way, no one has met her yet," Whedon said in a statement quoted by The Hollywood Reporter. "What I love most about icons is finding out what's behind them, exploring the price of their power. When Joel and I began discussing the character, I realized there is a woman behind the legend who is very fascinating, very uncompromising and in her own way almost vulnerable. She's someone who doesn't belong in this world, and since everyone I know feels that way about themselves, the character clicked for me."

 

"There's no one better than Joss to adapt the legendary Wonder Woman comic book character created in the 1940s into a dynamic feature film for 21st century audiences," Silver said in the statement. "Wonder Woman was the first great female superhero to emerge from comic books and later inspire millions of fans in her television incarnation, but unlike her counterparts Batman and Superman, this groundbreaking heroine has yet to be reinvented for the feature film arena."

 

Whedon is currently in post-production on the Universal feature Serenity, which he wrote and directed based on his short-lived Fox sci-fi series Firefly.

 

No start date was given for the Wonder Woman production.

I read that script and he got almost exactly what he deserved. Course, that was a bad project to begin with and the director didn't help him. But Joss deserves just as much bad credit for that stinker as everyone else.

I hated Resurrection, but I'm willing to give this a shot provided it doesn't suck. It's only fair, since I forgave Schumacher.

I think Joss will do just fine as the director of the Wonder Woman movie. After all, he was a writer on Toy Story (which was critically acclaimed) and created THREE cult television shows. Not to mention the fact that he has a very loyal fan base that will flock to this movie (as well as the Wonder Woman fans). Hell, he's even a comic book writer.

 

The only real problem is that he doesn't have much experience directing films. I believe Serenity will be the first film that he's actually been the director of. We'll soon see how that film does at the box office and with critics.

You got your hands on the original script, before it was ripped apart? Where did you get this?

 

And people have to remember when Whedon wrote Alien Resurrection, probably in 96 since the movie came out in 97, he wasn't as good as a writer. This was even before Buffy and he has grown since then, especially with Angel and Firefly coming out.

The fact that he writes comic books won't translate into movie watchers, seeing as he writes Astonishing X-Men. And I have no doubt that his fans will watch the movie, but the key is to get the regular moviegoing public to buy tickets. Which I'm not sure he can do.

To be honest, I don't think it matters. This was done more for the benefit of Firefly/Mutant Enemy fans than for box office rewards, and anything after getting the movie done and in theatres would probably be considered gravy to the fans.

You got your hands on the original script, before it was ripped apart? Where did you get this?

 

It was listed on an old script site that no longer exist. The script was complete with his "original" ending, which might have been somewhat cool except for the fact he completely abandons his own story by doing it.

 

It was very choppy to say the least and wouldn't have made a good movie to begin with. If anything, Whedon's script might have actually been a worse movie than the one that was made. There were parts were I ranged from "wow, cool" to "crap".

 

If you told me this was the guy who would go on to write "Buffy" and "Angel", I would have laughed in your face. It was plain horrible. And some of Joss's "scenes" made the A:R DVD and GOD would they have ruined the pace even more.

Oh, it won't do well at all. Universal SAYS they have faith in it, but they move it to a SEPTEMBER release date. The month that has the lowest box-office numbers.

 

The movie will do well IF the critics like it and from word of mouth. But the movie will make atleast $15 million opening weekend for all of the Whedon geeks out there.

Serenity will make a killing overseas (the Whedon fandom is bigger across the pond) and will pull a good 30 mil domestically (If Diary of a Angry Black woman can pull that much, this movie can too)

 

DVD sales will push it even further. I won't be suprised if they don't do a huge marketing campain to keep the cost down. This is a long term earner.

For me personally, there wasn't one specific thing that I can point out, but the whole thing just felt flat. Similar to Be Cool, all the elements are there, but it didn't come together for me.

I think that secondary market success is a given because of the fanbase, but I dunno if $60 (domestic) is realistic at the box office. But again, I don't think that how it does at the box office matters - this was a movie that was made for the fans (and because of the fans). Ticket sales are secondary here.
