MLB Opening Day Thread

Recommended Posts

I was just watching Tex/Sea and Soriano just took a nasty hit while covering first base. They seem to be dragging him back to second, but he was down for awhile. It could be worth keeping an eye on.

EDIT: Now it looks like he might be coming out of the game.

UPDATE: He's still in. So it looks like he's going to be alright.

Horribly 9th Inning for the Mariners so far as Boone has a grounder go through his legs and Hank Blalock hits a 2 Run shot. Mariners still have a 1 run lead though.

EDIT: Richard Hidalgo hit another 2 Run Homer to give the Rangers the lead.

A's 5th starter, Barry Zito is down 7-0 to the Devil Rays. At this rate he'll be a LOOGY when he's 30. Beane is going to have his work cut out for him next offseason to trade this sack of shit.

So after week 1 with XM I think Toronto and the Cubs radio guys rank as the worst I've heard.

EDIT: I'd also say the Detroit and Philly announcers have been the best so far.

I don't think I'm ever going to listen to a Yankee game on the radio ever again. Listening to Susan Waltman on pre and post games was bad, but now an entire game? No.

The Tampa Bay announcers are kind of funny. They're trying to talk and eat buffalo wings at the same time.

Bonds.

HA!

You're an idiot.

explain

I'll explain. Bonds last season posted the best OBP in history, the fourth best slugging percentage in history, and the best OPS in history. Until he proves he can't do that anymore, he is the best hitter in baseball.

Phillies beating up on the Cards 10-1. Gavin Floyd went 7, allowing only 3 hits and 1 run. Pat Burrell w/ 5 RBI's, including a 3-run HR. Currently in the bottom of the 8th. Don't think Worrell can blow this game.

Worrell had one bad outing. I think that when you take his career record into account, he is better than that. I don't forsee continued struggles.

and I see that the tradition is continuing, turning a thread on opening day to an all purpose every day MLB thread. Nice Touch. We can probably beat the Angel thread in here. Let's go for it.

Not a chance. We start a new thread Monday.

One of the rare pleasures of Philly fandom is that Harry Kalas and Scott Graham are very good announcers. I also dig the Athletics' crew of Bill King and Ken Korac, and I do think the Devil Ray announcers are enjoyable. Also be sure to catch Dodger games with Vin Scully, and Brewers' broadcasts with Bob Uecker.

I'd recommend trying out the Reds announcers. They can be highly entertaining as they just go off in weird tangents.

Holy shit and here I was worried Brian Jordan wouldn't be the Met killer he was last time he was a Brave. Grandslam for Brian Jordan in his first at bat against the Mets this year.

Edit: I have no idea why I thought it was his 1st at-bat he played yesterday.

For the Jays, Jerry Howarth is ok, but Warren Sawkiw is horrible (going by his in-studio analysis on Jays games on Sportsnet last year and him being the colour man for baseball at the Olympics last year). Unfortunately, Tom Cheek's sick, so he's not doing many games yet (I think he only did part of opening day), but he's awesome.

Christ....

I wasn't disputing Bonds as the best hitter in baseball. I said "HA!" because I completely forgot about him, due to the fact that he isn't "in" baseball at the moment, per se, and I found it funny. If that makes me an idiot, so be it! :phaser:

Worrell had one bad outing.

He blew 2 leads against Washington. Hopefully it won't be indicative of his entire season, but we'll see.

I like Larry Anderson, too. I get a Richie Ashburn-like vibe from him.

Harry is great and Graham seems to be very good as well, and I do like Larry Andersen as the color commentator. I wish Wheeler would get hit by a bus though....

A great bottom of the 9th in Miami. After Livan shut down the Marlins all game like he always does, Delgado hit a game tying HR. Two batters later, LoDuca drilled what looked to be a sure HR that saw all the Marlins stream out onto the field, but it hit just off the top of their very high scoreboard.

To extras.

I didn't notice it when Jordan hit his slam, but after Chipper just homered I realized that they changed what song they play at Turner Field for a Braves homerun. That makes me sad. :(
