SNL Review- Cameron Diaz/Green Day

TOP 20 MOMENTS IN SNL HISTORY:

5. Debbie Downer- the first one (not the sucky ones)

No one really expected a show hosted by Lindsay Lohan to become an episode that would be remembered for a long time. And for the most part, unless you’re a perv like me (The Potter skit) it really wasn’t. Then came the skit that would change the show’s importance for years to come. A simple slip-up by Rachel Dratch would create the most memorable moment of 2003-2004.

THE MOMENT:

The skit begins with a family at Disney World all happy and excited. Kenan Thompson is the waiter named Billiam so you know this skit is already awesome. Jimmy Fallon is excited for some steak and eggs but Debbie steps in and says ever since they found mad cow disease in the US- she’s not excited. To make this skit more awesomener, she has a theme song too! The family is telling fun Disney tales when Debbie interjects talking about how Roy isn’t doing that well. You know- Roy of Seigfried and Roy. After every Debbie-ism they play this sad hokey music too. Jimmy starts to laugh but he stays alive. It should be noted that Lindsay Lohan’s speech about going to Epcot and greeting people in their native language is awesome. She owns this skit.

Then it all goes to hell. Debbie talks about a train explosion and screws up secretive with sensitive and she loses it. She and Jimmy both start laughing. She tries to do her Debbie face and the music gets her and she starts laughing. Horatio also starts to lose it. They pull it together in time for Lindsay to meet Pluto. They all take a picture but another Debbieism (her two years at childrens) kills the mood. Pluto then starts dancing like an idiot so he kind of deserves the Debbieism he gets.

Pluto runs away and Debbie goes for another Debbieism but again she starts laughing and the skit goes to hell again and she completely loses it. Horatio has tears in his eyes and has to make sure he doesn’t choke on his waffles. Jimmy is grinning and even Amy can’t help herself. Linday is trying to stay in the game and Fred is staying strong. She can’t do a Debbieism without laughing hysterically and even Lindsay has lost it. Jimmy’s odd looks and attempts to not laugh at this situation are awesome.

We get the climatic Downer (“I can’t have children!”) and Rachel is crying of laughter and can barely do the Debbie face, Jimmy is laughing and now it’s Lohan’s time to shine. With the SNL cast dying around her, Lindsay gets the chance to make her bold statement. She stands up and yells at her but just starts laughing midway through. She temporarily pulls herself together and goes to yell at Debbie again but again she loses it. She takes a second to try and collect herself, Debbie makes a crack on feline AIDS and Lindsay runs off the stage in laughter. They try to make it through the last minute but Horatio and Jimmy can’t help. Debbie gets a final couple of Debbeisms (trying so hard not to laugh) and they all exit, having just took part in the most memorable skit of 2003-2004.

Oh and Debbie’s final Debbieism (They never did catch that anthrax guy) makes this skit!

Debbie Downer helped overshadow a mediocre Lohan show and caused people to proclaim it a classic. It was easily the most memorable moment of Dratch’s SNL career, and probably the most talked about and mainstream skit since the debates.

Now that’s an SNL moment.

Sports Report-

Braves- Off to an awesome 4-1 start. Like a classic Brave team, they’re winning games thanks to excellent pitching and getting hits when they need it. Brian Jordan hitting a grand slam against the Mets was a nice flashback to the old days.

Nets- Vince and Kidd are just playing insane basketball. I really hope it’s not too little too late as they are 1.5 out right now. Vince had 24! first quarter points today and has been averaging more then 30 ppg the past few days. Let’s hope for a Cleveland or Philly choke!

Hey Bob, It’s Ken Hayashi from Voy again. I have two different questions for you. First question: Have you posted your WrestleMania 21 match-by-match review anywhere on the Internet? If so, what is the link?

Second question: In one of your reviews from earlier this SNL season, you compared today’s teen movies (most notably, Mean Girls) to the teen movies of years past. You said that most of the teen movies from five years ago sucked compared to the teen movies you had recently seen. So what makes for a good teen movie? Some examples of not-so-good teen movies during the 1998-2002 teenybopper era would have to be She’s All That (with Freddie Prinze Jr.), Can’t Hardly Wait (with Jennifer Love Hewitt), Ten Things I Hate About You (with Julia Stiles), A Walk To Remember (with Mandy Moore), and Crossroads (with Britney Spears). Many of these movies are of the generic romantic comedy/chick flick category. But several teen-girly films during the 2003-present era haven’t bombed, and are building new young stars as the ones from yesteryear die out in popularity. Good examples are the American Pie movies (okay, the trilogy did start in 1999), Just Married (with Ashton Kutcher), The Lizzie McGuire Movie (w ith Hilary Duff), and, of course, Mean Girls (with Lindsay Lohan). So how are these kinds of contemporary teen movies different and better than the tepid teen movies of days gone by? I am interested in what you have to say, Bob. Thanks. Later, Ken

Hi Ken. I don’t think I did a match by match review. I thought HBK v. Angle and the money in the bank match were both fantastic matches. As an HBK hater it was awesome seeing him tap like a bitch and in the ladder match, it was great seeing Shelton make himself a star. Orton v. Taker was much better then I expected and they had me on the edge of my seat. Eddy v. Rey was okay but screwed up by the mask issues. HHH v. Batista was pretty good if a bit too long. Cena v. JBL was terrible.

What makes a good teen movie? It has to be smart first of all. Movies like Can’t Hardly Wait and She’s All That were just paint by the numbers with a dull cast of pretty boys and girls who could look good in YM Magazine and pull off faces that made them look sad and happy so the movie wouldn’t be a total joke. I have to say that Can’t Hardly Wait is so awful and so cliché, that I can’t hate it. Movies like Get Over It and Mean Girls were written with the audience in mind, they knew their audience wasn’t stupid and didn’t dumb down the jokes but instead were funny and worked to get a laugh. They didn’t have gross out gags just to have a gross out gag. They also were so well written that you ended up caring about the characters. Just Married is funny because Ashton is awesome, nothing more.

I wouldn’t call the Lizzie McGuire Movie a teen movie since it’s more for younger kids. I won’t use the word tweens since really, that’s gay. I like the Lizzie movie although compared to the TV show it’s not as good mainly because they ask you to forget that Lizzie kissed Gordo in the finale. It’s still a good movie though- it didn’t dumb down its writing, had good moments with animated Lizzie and because of the TV show- you cared about Lizzie and Gordo and that Italian bitch Palao. I also LOVE the ambiguous ending where you don’t know whether Lizzie and Gordo are officially together.

Chad Ruffner writes-

Although It wasn't a total disaster, I considered Monday's Show a huge disappointment given that It was The Raw following The biggest Show of The Year. The Raw after WM Is typically The Show to watch, as new feuds and story lines set The stage for the rest of the year. Whatever momentum The Company had following WM, (I don't know, I didn't order It), was brought to a halt by Monday's Program. I did enjoy The Stone Cold/Simon Dean/Maven Bit. While It didn't really accomplish anything long term, It was still a fun little throwaway segment. Other than that, though, I could've missed Raw and really not missed a thing. Too bad, as WWE wasted their best rating for a Raw (4.3) In over a year on such as blah show. I guess I should stop expecting so much from this Company anymore. Once again I'm thankful I taped 24, which did not disappoint. What did you think? Chad

I thought RAW was okay. The three-way was awesome and I always enjoy Benoit v. Edge. The Austin segment was funny but went on too long. Seeing Orton get squashed like a bitch was also pretty funny. Not an earth shattering show or anything but I have no major complaints.

And now the review…

Cold Opening

Cast- Darrell Hammond, Chris Parnell, Fred Armisen, Seth Meyers, Kenan Thompson

Thoughts- I missed the first 55 seconds of this, but it doesn’t sound like I missed much. Hey, when the past five weeks have sucked, I think I have the right to miss a little bit. I always enjoy a good Al Sharpton impression and Kenan didn’t disappoint. It was also good to see Darrell bust out the Tim Russert. This had a funny premise and it had some good lines. Fred and Seth make a good comic duo and at first it was funny but I have to say it got a bit old. The mocking of the decrepitly old Cardinals was funny as well. This was pretty funny, it probably could’ve been better but it was good enough. ***

Monologue

Cast- Cameron Diaz, Tina Fey, Rachel Dratch, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph

Thoughts- Man, 5 women in one skit is just asking for it to be unfunny. I know it’s sexist but come on, you know it’s true. This really wasn’t very funny. I did laugh at the awkward beginning with Rachel (even though I was dreading a Debbie Downer) and the pictures were funny but this was just a weak idea for a monologue. I have to say that I was kind of disappointed that Cameron wasn’t drunk off her ass like last time. Probably would’ve made fun for a funner show. This was whatever, hopefully Tom Brady can bust out a better monologue. **

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

Cast- Diaz, Parnell, Meyers, Poehler, Armisen, Will Forte

Thoughts- Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is one of those shows that you flip to on Sundays thinking it’s going to be crap and you’re going to laugh at the pure awfulness and cheesiness of it but damn it, it’s actually not a bad show and is so addictive. I’m not a regular viewer of it or anything because of Arrested Development, I’m just saying. I remember they did a spoof of this show in the Neeson episode that wasn’t so hot but this was hilarious. Parnell was awesome as usual playing a sleazeball and Seth was hilarious with his Ty Pennington impression. I loved the lines about him being contractually obligated to take off his shirt. Fred as the guy who always cries was funny too and I loved the Special Victims Unit joke. This whole skit was really funny and everyone was on their game here. ****

TV Funhouse

Thoughts- Smigel goes away for a while and a few of his recent cartoons hadn’t been too good so you had to think, is Smigel losing his touch? But just when you thought he lost the ability to offend he comes back in a big way tonight! I remember they did a similar skit like this with Michael Jackson in November 2000 and they couldn’t show the rerun because of a lawsuit threat.

This whole skit was so tasteless and just had so many cringe worthy yet hilarious moments like the Webster BP joke, tons of vomiting, Michael loading up the Jesus juice and of course the real Emmanuel Lewis being attracted to Michael Jackson. The best part was of course the spoof of Yogi Bear with Jackson doing the same reaction that Yogi used to do when he had a picinic basket. I hope they don’t get threatened again but this was very funny and it was great to see Smigel back. ****1/4

Barry Gibb

Cast- Jimmy Fallon, Drew Barrymore, Justin Timberlake, Diaz, Sanz

Thoughts- I don’t find this funny. I’ve debated with tons of people about this and I don’t see it. I wish I did see what was so funny about the Barry Gibb Talk Show but I don’t. It’s just Jimmy doing a bad Barry Gibb impression with a horrible voice and asking stupid questions. That’s not funny. I could kind of see people liking it but the hype that the skit got back in October 2003 was disgusting as there about 4 million better skits that have gone unnoticed. Also, how come everytime an SNLer comes back to the show, they have to do a skit that I hate? I remember being incensed when Will came back and did the Luvahs and I was sad when Tracy coming back meant he had to do Brian Fellows Safari Planet again. And now this. Instead of Jimmy doing one of his awesome impressions or a character like Nick Burns, we’re subjected to seeing a rehash of the most overrated skit if the 2003-2004 season. I liked this better then the first, since Jimmy’s first conniption was actually funny and I enjoyed Drew’s Ann Coulter impression. I don’t know why but anyone can pretty much do an impression of that crazy conservative bitch and I’ll laugh. So yea, to the shock of well me I guess since I’m the only one who doesn’t like it, Barry Gibb once again sucks. *1/4

One Star Hotel

Cast- Diaz, Sanz, Parnell, Hammond, Armisen, Finesse Mitchell, Rob Riggle

Thoughts- There must be something in the water tonight because this was another good skit. Parnell was awesome as the hotel manager and I always enjoy Fred’s senile old people characters. Diaz had some funny lines as the prostitute. The whole part about advice on prostitution was really funny. This skit had a good vibe going for it but I thought the end with Darrell kind of killed it. I understood what they were going for and sometimes stuff like that works but Darrell isn’t the type to pull it off so it just fell really flat. It’s a shame too because I really want to give this a great rating but I can’t in good conscious. ***1/4

Green Day ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’

Thoughts- I’m surprised they played this first and not second since it’s been out for a while. I was a Green Day hater for the longest time but even I have to concede that American Idiot is a pretty awesome album and I’m happy that they made a comeback by just producing such a great record. This was a really inspired performance of Boulevard and I loved seeing Billie Joe go a bit wild at the end. A kickass performance of a really good song. Could I be (GASP!) turning into a Green Day fan? ***3/4

Weekend Update

Cast- Fallon, Fey, Poehler, Meyers, Armisen, Dratch, Riggle

Thoughts- Thank God for Jimmy coming back. The interplay between him and Tina was just like old times and it was great seeing the chemistry that they still had. Of course it also showed how little chemistry Amy and Tina have and how horrible a duo they are. The kid dissing Taxi was awesome and so true (I still have nightmares about it) and come on- Jimmy and Tina have to kiss sometime! And when they do- I’ll give the skit ***** no matter what. Tina had a really good week and I thought she got some really jokes in there. Amy was her usual horrible self but she didn’t bring it down too much. I loved the bit with Charles and Camilla. It was really funny the last time they did it and it was hilarious here. Riggle also had a good British accent. While this WU did have its usual Amy-Tina flaws, seeing Jimmy again was great and this had two great non-joke segments. One of the top Updates of the season. ***1/2

Woooooo: The Musical

Cast- Diaz, Dratch, Forte, Armisen, Sanz, Rudolph, Thompson

Thoughts- Cameron wearing the flesh coloured top? Nice! Cameron trying to sing? Not so much. This had its funny moments including the absurd reviews for the show and Cameron puking at the end. Still it’s 12:30 so a lot of this skit wasn’t very funny and they were just going the motions. Still an okay skit, but this was just nothing to write home about. **

Sofa Bed

Cast- Diaz, Parnell, Mitchell, Thompson

Thoughts- Kenan was his usual funny self in this skit but it never really had a chance thanks to an incredibly lame premise to begin with. I mean a skit about sofa beds? Come on SNL- you can do better. Although this show has been good so far so I won’t complain too much. I did laugh when Cameron talked about hitting them with a crowbar so it had that going for it. *1/4

Green Day ‘Holiday’

Thoughts- Even though I disagree with Green Day politically, I have to admire them for keeping the political message in the song. As I said in my review of Boulevard, I enjoy American Idiot and this is another good song from the CD and Green Day gave another inspiring performance. With Beck coming next week, I have to say that even though creatively SNL hasn’t been so hot this season, they’ve had some great musical guests. ***1/2

Spyglass

Cast- Diaz, Meyers, Poehler, Sanz

Thoughts- Cameron Diaz- you are no Vivian Cinnamon so please don’t even try to act like her. I know I’m the only person in the world who thinks Spyglass is hilarious, but even I thought this was a weak edition. Amy was really bad and instead of being funny annoying, she just came off as annoying and just was in the skit too much. Horatio as Gene Shalit was really bad and Cameron just made me long for that adorable Vivian Cinnamon. Seth’s horrible puns saved this skit and made me remember why I loved Spyglass so much. Not one of the better editions and this really should’ve been cut from dress to protect the integrity and the high standards of excellence that Spyglass has. **

The Bottom Line- The avg. skit was **.8 meaning that SNL FINALLY snapped the five week rut they had been involved off. The show seemed to tail off a bit after Update, but the first half was great and it was nice getting to give out **** again. Green Day was an awesome musical guest and the appearance of Jimmy Fallon seemed to give SNL the spark it needed to finally get over the hump and give us a good episode. Even though she wasn’t drunk, Cameron Diaz was a strong host for the third time. I’m kind of sad that they finally have a good episode and have to ruin the momentum by bringing in Tom Brady. I don’t know much about him comedically, but I hope he doesn’t pull a Roddick and that Beck can bust out two amazing performances. Lets not be too negative, because I have to say it was fun watching SNL and getting to laugh again.

Thumbs Up

One of the best episodes of the season (although I missed the Giammati, Deniro, and Kutcher Episodes)

Loved the Barry Gibb talk show

Jimmy was awesome, and proved that he was a very underrated cast member that got way too much unfair criticism it's not even funny

The crowd popping huge for Barrymore suprised even her

Could it even be more obvious that Tina wrote the monolgue, she's been on the show so long that I can tell the sketches she writes just by the topic and dialogue. It's usually about girls feeling unattractive or having low self esteem, make some vagina jokes, then have it end with Ratchel Dratch with a weird look on her face. Tina is one the most gorgeous women I've ever seen ,but it might be time for her to leave the show.

And Bob, speaking of Diaz being drunk the last time, did you see Drew on Conan the other day, she looked totally wasted

For some reason I just found the first Barry Gibb talk show skit hilarious, so it was awesome to see it again tonight and it was just as funny as the first one.

No- don't worry. It's just me. I just have never seen the humour in the Barry Gibb talk show and I've given it tons of chances. I figure it balances out since I think Spyglass is the shit and well everyone thinks it's just shit.

Jimmy was awesome, and proved that he was a very underrated cast member that got way too much unfair criticism it's not even funny

Totlaly agreed- when he was back at the desk he seemed so natural compared to Amy's stifness. It was like he never left.

Yea, it's pretty much been time for Tina to leave this year. It pains me to say it but she's had a pretty bad year and her time is up. I mean there's only so many different ways you can tell a vagina joke and she's told them all.

And Bob, speaking of Diaz being drunk the last time, did you see Drew on Conan the other day, she looked totally wasted

No I missed it- she was a last minute replacement for Jimmy so she probably was getting liquoured up not knowing she'd be on.

Don't worry Bob, I like Green Day, too, even though they hate their country, and Holiday is my second-favorite track, after Jesus of Suburbia (Boy, that political talk really made a difference, eh Billly Joe?...)

Jesus of Suburbia is nice but 9 minutes is a bit too long for me.

I love the Barry Gibb talk show as well.... I just think the absurdity of it is pretty funny. I was happy to see it last night.

Barry Gibb seems to be getting more of a mixed reaction then the last one. I've seen some people complain it was just a rehash of the last one while others are once again telling me how much they loved it.

I thought it was a solid but unspectacular skit. There are far worse things they could have done with that time. Overall, I really enjoyed the show. Definitely one of the better ones I've seen this season. And no insulting Tom Brady. He's one of my personal gods. Overall, I can see him being pretty good at it. He's got charisma, knows how to depricate himself, and doesn't take things all that seriously when there's a mic in front of him. He'll definitely be a better host than Roddick was.

I dont know why, maybe I was real tired but the Barry Gibb had me ROTFL. Esepcially when Jimmys voice went up three octaves while talking/singing. The guest appearances caught me off guard there. All in all the show was ok, but not great. Green Day sounded very good, as always. I know alot dont like them, but for some reason I find pretty much all of their songs to be catchy and listen worty.

And what exaclty is their poltical message that you disagree with? I m sorry I dont have th cd and havent listened close enough to get the full idea. So they hate the President? what celebrity doesnt? It's nothing new. Freedom of Speech guys remember it, because we are slowly losing it.

and just so you know I dislike the government too sometimes. But there's nothing I can do about it but rant.

Eh- with Jimmy back they could've done a Nick Burns or a Z-105 and it would've been much better then the Barry Gibb

That's good to hear- athletes have a horrible SNL track record, so you'll excuse me in being a bit nervous about him hosting. If he comes in willing to do anything and he gets good writing, we could see a good show. Beck will definetely help the average.

He'll definitely be a better host than Roddick was.

Hopefully he can be better then Jeff Gordon as well.

I heard rumours of cameos so I wasn't too shocked but Jimmy being on Update was just awesome. I think a lot of people didn't care for old Green Day but I've heard nothing bad about American Idiot.

I didn't say they shouldn't sing their songs or anything like that. A lot of the songs on the CD are anti-Bush or seem to be. I still think the CD is great so I don't care.

I'm a Bush supporter- I don't really care about political messages unless it compromises the music and makes it suck.

And thank you

ok thanks for clarifying.

If all us Bush fanboys only listened to music that agreed with the president then, well, we'd be listening to a lot of country music, sans those Dixie Terrorists...

Just redo the skit with Joe Montana, Phil Hartman, and Jan Hooks. Where Montana says, exactly what he's thinking.Just put in Amy Poehler, and Seth Myers in Hartman and Hooks places.

A lot of the songs on the CD are anti-Bush or seem to be.

The problem is that if you take the songs as singles, they're going to come off as blatantly anti-Bush and anti-war, but if you listen to the CD the entire way through, it actually tells a cohesive story. Sure, political overtones are all over the place, but it's the story of a young man who is disenfranchised with America.

whats wrong with being anti-bush or anti-war?

I am both so I guess I am biased

Not to mention an America-hating commie (as opposed to an America-loving commie)

Freedom of Speech guys remember it, because we are slowly losing it.

I lost mine the other week. I think it's somewhere in my basement, but I'm too lazy to look for it...
