cabbageboy Posted April 27, 2005 Report Posted April 27, 2005 What I hope they don't do with Christian is the following: Have him get drafted by SMDN and then show up, challenge Cena, job his first week there...and then have nothing else to do. And you just KNOW that'd be the case most likely.
Scroby Posted April 27, 2005 Report Posted April 27, 2005 What I hope they don't do with Christian is the following: Have him get drafted by SMDN and then show up, challenge Cena, job his first week there...and then have nothing else to do. And you just KNOW that'd be the case most likely. Â Hopefully that won't happen. If anything say Christian does go over to Smackdown, he should be the guy whose bugging Long for a title shot at Cena but Long being the kind of GM he is, won't give it to him. So Christian goes out week after week busting his ass until Long finally has to give a title shot to Christian around SummerSlam time because Christian somehow "earned" one and we get Christian vs Cena at Summerslam with the fans turning on Cena and cheering for Chrstian as Christian wins the title.
Brett Favre Posted April 27, 2005 Report Posted April 27, 2005 That fans aren't turning on Cena for Christian. He ain't Batista.
Team Angle Pusher Posted April 27, 2005 Report Posted April 27, 2005 They boo'ed Cena at Smackdown! this week....because Christian owned him with the Marky Mark comment
Brett Favre Posted April 27, 2005 Report Posted April 27, 2005 They aren't going to be in England every week. They've been booing faces for a while.
cabbageboy Posted April 27, 2005 Report Posted April 27, 2005 I'm not 100% on this but I think Cena will start feeling the backlash once he faces people the fans have some respect for. No one in their right minds would cheer bums like Kenzo Suzuki (where'd he go anyway?) or Renee Dupree over Cena, nor JBL for that matter. But what happens when Cena faces someone like Christian who is rapidly gaining support? Or faces Eddie, now that Eddie is basically a heel? Â Cena's gimmick by definition limits his appeal, since there are a huge amount of people that dislike wiggers. Thus cheering him is something that people are doing against their will at some subconscious level.

They cheered him against Eddie, Benoit, Angle, Brock, and even Taker at some points when he was a heel.
iggymcfly Posted April 27, 2005 Report Posted April 27, 2005 Who really cares who they cheer for as long as they're into the feud. Say Cena feuds with Christian, and they're both presented as having a decent shot at winning. If 60% of the crowd likes Cena and wants him to win, and 40% likes Christian and wants him to win, won't both groups be equally likely to buy the PPV? Â It's really when faces are getting a muted reaction against unover heels that you have to worry. When you've got a divisive face on top that's going against a heel with somewhat of a cult following, I think it's more of a win-win situtation.
tekcop Posted April 27, 2005 Report Posted April 27, 2005 Examples. Edge a year ago. Wasn't everyone booing Edge a year ago?
Brett Favre Posted April 27, 2005 Report Posted April 27, 2005 He wasn't getting much of a reaction a year ago; but they were one of the first to boo him.
Dark Age Posted April 27, 2005 Report Posted April 27, 2005 Everyone was pretty much booing Edge by that point. He turned heel on that show, which indicates that he'd been getting booed for a while, and, hence, WWE's desire to turn him.

His fan support is not dying down any time soon.
Brett Favre Posted April 27, 2005 Report Posted April 27, 2005 People are on the Christian bandwagon (even though the reactions came from MSG and England), so they'll hang on to anything in support of Cena's popularity going down. It ain't happening anytime soon.

But what happens when Cena faces someone like Christian who is rapidly gaining support? Or faces Eddie, now that Eddie is basically a heel? That alone doesn't mean everything. If you look at The Rock for the past several years, he was the same way. And you wouldn't second-guess Rock's popularity or success. Â Put almost any long-running babyface against an up-and-coming tweener heel and the babyface will get booed to a certain extent. There are only a few babyfaces (Foley, Austin, Jericho) who are immune to that. As long as Cena's feuds generate interest and he's not getting 'go away' heat, I say there's absolutely nothing wrong with having the crowd go back and forth. I think more crowd decision-making and involvement is what this business needs.

Batista was getting it, but he's champion now. Before that it was Randy Orton in the summer. Cena is still the top babyface. The fans might not like all his pandering, but when he cuts promos like last week at MSG he connects the best with the new audience. He can always just turn heel, but with his cd and movie coming out I think he can only get more popular carrying the real belt.
Lord of The Curry Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 The Christian Coalition vs The Chain Gang IS the WWE fan war of 2005. Â Cena may be one of the most (if not the most over) wrestler with the fans but those who aren't a fan of him have been waiting very patiently for somebody to be vocal about it. Â That man is Christian. Â The time is now.
Spaceman Spiff Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 FYI: Christian's shirt is the #1 seller in the Shopzone.
King Cucaracha Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 That's only because Cena hasn't had a new shirt in the past 2 weeks. You just wait until his new one comes out. His popularity is as strong as ever I tell ya!  I'm not 100% on this but I think Cena will start feeling the backlash once he faces people the fans have some respect for. Cena's gimmick by definition limits his appeal, since there are a huge amount of people that dislike wiggers. Thus cheering him is something that people are doing against their will at some subconscious level. They cheered him against Eddie, Benoit, Angle, Brock, and even Taker at some points when he was a heel.  That was back when he was on Christian's level. His raps were still entertaining, he still had the badass streak to him. Now though, he's not popular with the same people. A lot of the people that cheer for him are the kind of fans who spend hours making those spinny signs, pop for Cena's entrance, sit on their hands during the matches and then pop when Cena wins.  I'm not just talking MSG and England here, either. I remember the crowd being pretty quiet (and not just because of whatever sound problems there may or may not have been) during his Mania match. As the most over face in the company, surely he should be getting the all-match-long support like the Austins and Rocks he's always compared to.
Team Angle Pusher Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 Damn I just saw his bits on RAW again and if the WWE doesn't do something with this they are STUPID. He got cheered like fuck, it wasn't normal. The show was all about Christian. But why the hell did Kane interrupt Christian's speech?!

cabbageboy Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 Cena isn't the most over guy in the company, he's just the guy they are pushing. There's a big difference there. Put him against an Eddie Guerrero in a face/face situation and I think the crowd would gravitate towards Eddie. 1. Eddie is a better wrestler by far and even a dumb mark would know it. 2. Eddie has more credibility. Â Hell, put Cena against RVD when he gets back and see what happens. I think the crowd would gravitate towards RVD, or at best for Cena would be confused and not know who to pull for. Â In a wilder idea, if they wanted to revive the Cena/Carlito feud with a more over Carlito I think you might see Carlito get a shocking amount of support.

As the most over face in the company, surely he should be getting the all-match-long support like the Austins and Rocks he's always compared to. Â One, that match was cut short for HHH. And two, those are the similar sounds to most of the Christian matches. Â And if he's compared to Austin and Rock, shouldn't that tell you that he IS over? Not the bullshit over you spit out in that first paragraph.

It really doesn't matter what you think. Fact is, he along with Eddie, are getting the loudest pops in the company. We'll just have to wait to see if he stays this over when he does face Eddie. Although he did take some of Eddie's cheers away when they did face each other back then.
PLAGIARISM! Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 I'm not so sure that Eddie would be more popular actually. Obv. They're turning him heel and all, but in the last six months he's been in second place. That will probably change with his next face run. I think Cena will fade eventually because of his increasingly obvious limitations, but his merchandise machine is in full swing and his reaction on the stick is nearing Rock levels now.
King Cucaracha Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 That was back when he was on Christian's level. His raps were still entertaining, he still had the badass streak to him. Â Compare the Eddie chants during a match to Cena's for a moment though and tell me who's more over than who. If the fans aren't routing for him during matches, they're not into his ring work. All they're into him for are the catchphrases and hang signals. And when they run out, he's got the exact same problem Rock always had...fans'll dump on him more and more until he ends up in a Lesnar/Rock situation. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Christian was the Lesnar to Cena's Rock if they meet. Â I'm not just talking MSG and England here, either. I remember the crowd being pretty quiet (and not just because of whatever sound problems there may or may not have been) during his Mania match. Not the bullshit over you spit out in that first paragraph. Â One, what difference does that make. Short match or long, surely fans should care about what he's doing in the ring? Two...similar sounds to Christian's matches. Like when they routed for him against Batista? Â And three...sure, he's compared to Rock and Austin because he's over. The comparisons are pretty weak though. I'd compare him more to Dusty Rhodes, actually, for pretty obvious reasons.
cabbageboy Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 I didn't say that Eddie was more over at this moment. After all they are turning him heel and it seems like the guy hasn't won a match in 6 months. So of course Cena would currently be a little more over...he's actually getting a PUSH. Eddie has remained quite over despite jobbing out to everyone the past few months. If Cena was in Eddie's jobbing role his heat would be bye bye. I guess in an odd way it's to their credit for realizing that some guys can take being jobbed out, and others can't.
