The Decemberists 0 Report post Posted April 27, 2005 Every couple of months or so me and my mates have a competition where you need a make a CDR of 15 songs which all have a common theme, for example the last one was religion, and then do enough copies for however many people are taking part, hand them out and then mark each track for music quality and relevance to theme. Everyone who enters puts in £5 and the winner gets the pot. And I was thinking maybe we could sort something out on the board, using You Send It to upload the tracks as MP3s, or as a zip folder of the album if You Send It let's you do that or not, I'm not sure. The only problem would be getting a sort of prize, but would the pride of victory be enough? And the real point is to get you listening to songs you normally wouldn't, like I've got into the Smithereens and Sophie Zelmani by liking tracks of theirs that have ended up on a mate's entry. Any thoughts?
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted April 27, 2005 What, is there a panel of judges? How can one compete on something subjective in this format?
The Decemberists 0 Report post Posted April 27, 2005 It's not meant to be subjective, it's all personal opinion. Like say Dave, John and Steve are doing it. Dave gives a CDR to both John and Steve, who each mark each track twice, once for the song itself, and then for the relevence to the topic. Then the total marks given by John and Steve are added to gether and divided by two to get the average, so that then becomes the score for Dave's CDR. So if someone does a CD which is full of death metal then person A who hates death metal would score it low for music, but could it could still score highly for the theme. But then if person B likes death metal then it could score highly for the music and for the topic.
Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted April 27, 2005 Seems interesting, but you don't necessarily have to go through all the trouble of uploading it. People can find ways to hear it on their own. Seems like one of those "Get people to expand their horizons" type of deal.
rising up out of the back seat-nuh 0 Report post Posted April 27, 2005 It would be easier to upload, if possible. I'd be more likely to hear the tracks that way than to slsk a load of tracks. I'm up for it.

Steviekick 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2005 For those of us who are poor/don't have time to get to the post office, couldn't we just post lists of songs?
Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2005 I like the idea, but honestly I'm probably too lazy to actually follow through with it. I might tell my friends and we could do it.

The Decemberists 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2005 Oops There's a reason I'm not doing English at Uni... Anyway, seeing as there seems to be some interest, does anyone have any thoughts on a possible topic? Or should I just pick one, in a supreme overlord stylee? rising up out of the back seat-nuh 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2005 Overlord.
The Decemberists 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2005 OK, for those taking part the theme for the CDs will be... Transport. Quick go through the 'rules'; 1)15 songs on the album 2)Only one song per band/artist allowed, BUT you can have, for example, a Beatles song, a Lennon solo song, a McCartney solo song etc. 3)You must own the album the song is taken from, so you can't just search on Soulseek or whatever, of course there's no way to prove whether you've done this or not so it's a bit of a lame rule to be honest. Upload them onto YouSendIt.com or anywhere else you can by next Monday (May 9th) and then I'll do a Excel spread sheet for the marking and upload that for eveyone to get. I think that's pretty much it, any questions then ask. Good luck.
Henry Spencer 0 Report post Posted May 3, 2005 I'm trying to figure out how to work YouSendIt....
The Decemberists 0 Report post Posted May 3, 2005 Tell it you want to send the file to your own e-mail address. Then when it uploads you'll get an e-mail with a link to the file. Copy and paste that link to your reply on here then it's get-able.

Cartman 0 Report post Posted May 4, 2005 Tough topic...I may try if I can find enough songs to fit.
The Decemberists 0 Report post Posted May 4, 2005 I don't think it's that tough. I mean there's plenty of songs about cars, plenty that mention trains or planes or whatever. And if you can't find enough songs on topic, you can stick on any song at all and try to score high on the song quality to make up for the irrelevence.
