Your worst ever sporting moment

Recommended Posts

I like how os fans make a deal out of the Maier incident. It didnt even win the game. You still managed to blow it after. I can see if it was like game 5 or 6, but only game 1. I mean whos to say even if the os won the first two games, the yanks were hot in baltimore and went on a tear. I still belive the yanks would have won that alcs even if it took 6 or 7.

Although I can understand why that bothers you, it was a bad call, but what can you do?

Besides New York is 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 times cooler than Baltimore anyday of the week.

Because any playoff game is important, because the little fuck was not immediate booted from the stadium, and because there is no fucking reason the right field umpire (Rich Garcia) should have missed that call.

The call absolutely cost the Orioles the game. It allowed the tying run to score. If not for that game, the series is 3-2 after five, and while the Orioles would have needed to win the next two, that is certainly not an impossible task.

In fact, while we're calling for astericks due to steroid use, I demand one of my own. Derek Jeter's postseason line should forever contain an asterick that declares, "Derek Jeter collected a home run instead of a flyball out because of a little dickweed fan."

I got 2.....

I was all happy when the Giants led SF 38-14 in the third quarter of a playoff game in 03. Just to watch the 49ers score 25 unanswered points to win the game, topped with a botched FG attempt, and a MISSED interference call on that last play...good lord

Mets down 5-0 early to Atlanta in Game 6 og the 99 playoffs. the mets were down 3 games to 0 and came back to win the next 2. In game 6 they actually came back and had the lead in the 9th inning just to watch fuckin Armando Benitez blow the save, and Kenny Rogers walk in the winning run in extra innings.....damnit!!

Oh, I'd say the "Redemption Catch" is right up there as well.. The 7 seconds left, Young-to-Owens TD that took the breath right out of me.

I certainly feel for you regarding that. If I were a Packers fan, I probably would have felt the same way.

Redemption Catch, The Catch II, whatever you want to call it; it was certainly one of those "holy shit" moments.

Wasn't that the game where Rice fumbled and was called down by contact that set the whole thing up?

I'm not an O's fan, I like them well enough, but I'm not a fan. None the less that play was total horseshit. I get pissed anytime a fan interfers, and this was just fucking blatant as hell. The thing that makes it worse isn't just that it was a playoff game, but instead of being ejected, and maybe shot to death in an alley, he's treated like royalty. I remember seeing him all over TV, and if I recall correctly he met the mayor and got the key to the city. You DON'T fucking reward a fan stealing a fly out. That just encourages more morons. FUCK YOU JEFF MAIER DIE DIE DIE DIE. (I'm slightly drunk, if I were sober he'd only get three dies.)

That fucking kid who's name should not be spoken, stealing the ball from Tony Tarasco, leading to a home run, and an unfair Orioles playoff loss, that ultimately cost them a trip to the World Series. Then the little bastard was paraded around by the New York media and invited on to talk shows...the Yankees deserve every bit of bad luck that comes their way and I hope this is the year the Orioles knock them off their mountain...

If I had the ability to go back in time, I would tattle on him for skipping school the whole day so that he wouldnt show up. And if he did show up, I think Id punch him in the face.

Of course the rule of time travel and all would state there would be an equally annoying result to the same play anyway, but at least I dont think it could be such an annoying little bitch of a kid doing it.

I was actually thinking of the Maier game as one of my worst moments too. I really did hate that fucking kid. I remember Bob Costas was trying to justify it and saying that we didn't know how the game would have went if he'd never caught the ball, like the Yankees would have magically scored more runs if they knew they needed to. Bullshit. That kid stole the game, pure and simple.

Then, the next year, the Orioles gave another worst moment nominee when they were playing the Indians in the ALCS. Armando Benitez had been giving up homers left and right for weeks, and then they put him in to face Albert Belle, in the bottom of the 12th in a 0-0 game. I remember praying that he'd just hit him or walk him or something, but of course he just gave him a fat fastball to rip over the fence for the game winning HR.

Losing the 93 play-off final to Swindon. Coming back from 3-0 down only to be robbed by a terrible late penalty. Couldn't even speak afterwards. I'm not generally a bitter man but i'm glad Swindon have had such a rubbish time of it since.

I shed some tears when Southgate missed at Euro 96. That wasn't in the 3 Lion's script and it hurt.

I think you might be thinking of another game. I was at the game 6 we lost to Cleveland at OPACY and I distinctly remember it being Tony Fernandez in the bottom of the 9th (which made it all the more painful to have this little infielder cost us our season).

And yep, I'm right: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/sport...s/alcs/alcs.htm

Oh god. Just looking at those pictures is bringing back some awful memories. There were people in the stand around me, men and women openly crying. That was supposed to be our year, and it would be the last winning season we'd have...well to date.

EDIT: You were sort of right in that it was in the 11th inning. God that was agonizing to sit through. I don't blame Benitez at all, if you can't score ANY runs in 11 innings behind a Mike Mussina shutout, you don't deserve to win. Didn't make it any less horrible though...

Yeah, it was. This was in the `98 season (Vikings fans remember it well..), the year before the current instant replay system went into effect. I remember Holmgren and a lot of people were bitching that Rice was getting biased calls because he's a "superstar"- nevermind the fact that Green Bay also has one of the largest fanbases in the NFL and had just won the two previous NFC Championships (and one of the Super Bowls to boot).

It kinda was bullshit, but when you think about these "one play that determined the outcome"-type games, you really also have to consider that had your team not gotten in the situation to choke like that, it wouldn't even be an issue. I don't look at just one play like 4th and 26 or the Redemption Catch, I look at all the shit that happened after 4th and 26 (The Favre lame duck in OT, dropped catches on offense, and just plain terrible defense after the 1st down) or the defense choking that led to the Redemption Catch. Those plays were just the icing on a foul cake.

That's why I don't squawk about the Giants playoff disaster against SF that ended with the non-PI call against a lineman who was lined up at the TE position, since they blew a 28 point lead prior to that, to get up to that point. The most memorable image that sticks in my mind from that game is TO dragging Jason Sehorn into the endzone, while Sehorn is clutching his arms around Owens' waist for dear life. YUCK what an awful game that was, right after the awesome 10-7 OT win in Week 17 against Philly to eek into the playoffs.
