Yeah, I like the new trilogy for the most part. There's redeeming qualities to each movie like the light-saber fights, Palpatine, Obi-Wan, etc. But I honestly think the people's expectations set the bar extremely high, and realistically few creators could have met those expectations without disappointing a lot of folks.

bobobrazil1984 Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 Lucas by his own admission actually hates the scriptwriting process. and it shows. it seems like his only joy was creating some cool special effect setpieces. Even the OT script he wrote, the original, has some bad lines saved by the charm of the actors, and also when I read this Annotated Screenplays book, they had an asterisk next to exchanges that were written by these two other guys, there wasn't a lot but it mostly all the funny dialogue. He really should have outlined the plots, then just handed the sucker off to a good screenwriter.

Ep. 2 was written by Jonathon Hales. For each film, because I'm a huge nerd, I read the novelizations before I saw the films. The stories actually worked in that form, in my opinion. I'm convinced the problem was with the acting (which, judging from behind the scenes footage, Lucas intentionally directed to be a stiff and dull as possible) and editing (because Lucas thinks 34563 separate shots of ships taking off and landing really ads to the mythos of the epic I guess). The gigantic gaping plotholes didn't help either. I enjoyed watching them a lot the first time I saw each of them, but none of the films in the new trilogy stand up to repeat viewing the way that the original trilogy did.

Then it would collapse as fans realized that the Star Wars universe does not lend itself to one hour (minus commercials) episodes. Unless they went something along the lines of Lost, with one or two main storylines tying everything together, then each episode somehow branches off to focus on a certain character. Hmmm... Nah I still don't see it.

These are all going to be approved by Lucas, and they're going to further distance the EU and the movie "canon".

I'd rather see Luke struggle to rekindle the Jedi Order, the New Republic still trying to vanquish the remnants of the Empire and what not. I mean, what, exactly, would they cover in this series?
Special K Posted March 17, 2006 Report Posted March 17, 2006 The Thrawn series is awesome. Here's my whole pisstake on the new trilogy. Ok: Clearly Anakin and Obi-Wan are the main characters. Why on earth would you waste the ENTIRE first movie with little to no character development for Anakin? Making him a kid was the worst mistake they could have made. Sure the kid sucked, but you were wasting the whole movie in the first place. It should have been an entire movie with Anakin turning. It happened way too fast in Sith (a pretty good movie) and made Anakin look, frankly, gullible and stupid. And let's face it, the series loses a LOT without a Han Solo character. A bunch of Jedis sitting around, twiddling their fucking thumbs and speaking in platitudes is not that exciting. I can see that SWII is an enjoyable movie if you don't compare it to the previous Star Wars movies, but Phantom Menace is a straight-up terrible movie. Just terrible. But either way, the Thrawn series is awesome, and reads like a movie.

I am sure this has been answered before, but if the Jedi aren't allowed to be married, how can they have kids who will be future Jedi? Or are they just allowed to breed randomly to make more Jedi?

I don't believe it's ever been specified how, but they identify infants with Force potential and appropriate them. With the parents' permission, of course. In Babylon 5, when they identify a telepath, they give a choice: Join Psi Corps or go on a drug that inhibits telepathy. Problem is, the drug leads to depression and suicide. The Jedi need a moral ambiguity like that to make them more interesting.

Lucas decided to create the whole Medecholorian thing so I guess having a high count of that is a sign that the force is strong in that child. With the inclusion of the medecholorians, there is speculation that they alone created Anakin and he's almost like the Jesus of the Star Wars world (with Shmi Skywalker as Mary). other silliness mentioned is that Palpatine's master (forgot his name) may have manipulated the meds. to create Anakin. Obviously, Jedi offspring naturally have the force...the others are just born with it

Black Lushus Posted June 6, 2006 Author Report Posted June 6, 2006 the Sith Lords are apparently powerful enough to mask their presence from the Jedi so you could go with either A or B there. Think about this...Palpatine was powerful enough to mask his presence long enough to start a fake war, create an army of clones and take over an entire republic...but he wasn't good enough to keep his apprentice from betraying and murdering him, something that has happened time and time again in Sith lore.

Like how Palpatine told the story about the man who knew the power to heal people and his apprentice killed him (which I am guessing was Palpatine who did the killing.) They can't seem to protect themselves from their own people.

Do they check every baby in every hospital in the galaxy? Palpatine's master, Darth Plagueis, was not a Jedi from what I know. Wikipedia erroneously lists the information of Plageuis being Palpy's master as Expanded Universe when it is implied in the movie and stated in the novelization, which is canon. I am sure we will learn more as novels come out over the years. THOSE will be EU. A novel about Darth Bane is coming out later this year. I believe it is called Path of Destruction and follows the events of the awful Jedi vs. Sith comic.

It may not be that far fetched for the Senator to have a child who would end up a Jedi. I mean, she was a strong willed woman who fought for what she believed in (except her kids..they weren't important, it's all about Annie). As for the Pregnancy, I guess they were too busy with the Clone Wars to really pay much attention to who a Senator was banging on the side. They pretty much left it up to Obi Wan to keep track and he failed miserably.
