5 On Your Side Health Team Anchor Lee Jordan reported sources close to the Winslow story said the Sunday motorcycle accident left Winslow with a broken tibia and femur, along with a fracture to the large bone in his thigh. His ACL was damaged, possibly torn and there are lacerations on his liver and kidney.

I'll repeat what I said when the accident happened:

What a dumb fuck.

That's a god damn shame. He showed potential to be an amazing tight end in the limited time he played for the Browns.

Hopefully it is not the case and he can come back to play football.

Hopefully this teaches the other players in the league to not do stupid things like this. Why was Winslow going 35 on a motorcycle in a parking lot when he was learning how to drive one?

Great news for Steeler fans!

Uneasy rider: Roethlisberger not getting off motorcycle

By ALAN ROBINSON, AP Sports Writer

May 6, 2005

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Despite Kellen Winslow Jr.'s accident and his own coach's admonition, Big Ben isn't hopping off his big bike just yet.

Ben Roethlisberger was lectured Friday by Steelers coach Bill Cowher on the dangers of riding a motorcycle without a helmet -- as Roethlisberger has been spotted doing recently -- but the quarterback isn't ready to get off his $20,000 cycle.

``He talked about being a risk taker and I'm not really a risk taker. I'm pretty conservative and laid back, but the big thing is to just be careful,'' Roethlisberger said as the Steelers opened their minicamp. ``I'll just continue to be careful. I told him we don't ever ride alone, we always ride in a group of people, and I think it makes it even more safe.''

Asked why he doesn't wear a helmet -- something he wouldn't think about doing on a football field -- Roethlisberger pointed out Pennsylvania's 35-year-old state law requiring helmets to be worn was amended two years ago.

``Obviously Pennsylvania doesn't think people need to (wear a helmet),'' he said. ``There's a law you've got to wear it in football.''

Steelers linebacker Joey Porter was surprised to hear the NFL offensive rookie of the year is taking such risks so soon after Winslow's accident. The Browns tight end, drafted five spots ahead of Roethlisberger last year, was injured Sunday when he flew off a newly purchased motorcycle after running into a parking lot curb.

``Some guys are real good on motorcycles and know what they're doing, but accidents happen,'' Porter said. ``I can't knock the guy for doing it, but it's probably not the wisest thing to do. I don't own a bike because I don't trust them.''

Porter occasionally gets on a Jet Ski, but he said that's different from steering a motorcycle through heavy traffic. Roethlisberger acknowledged many drivers become distracted when they see him riding, shouting or waving at him.

``If I fall off a Jet Ski, I hit the water, and I like my odds,'' Porter said. ``I'm going to get wet. What I say about motorcycles is that concrete is undefeated.''

Of course, Roethlisberger was, too, as a rookie, going 13-0 during the Steelers' team-record 15-1 regular season before losing to New England in the AFC championship game.

The Steelers are understandably cautious about combining a first-round draft choice and a high-speed vehicle. Gabe Rivera, the defensive lineman they chose instead of quarterback Dan Marino in the 1983 draft, was paralyzed after wrecking his sports car midway through his rookie season and hasn't walked since.

Many NFL contracts prohibit engaging in dangerous activities, but Roethlisberger's deal apparently doesn't specifically ban motorcycle riding.

Cowher didn't criticize Roethlisberger's riding, but is visibly uneasy with it.

``I certainly don't condone that,'' Cowher said. ``It (playing pro football) is a very small time in your life and you've got to be very careful -- you can see it documented with Kellen Winslow in Cleveland. There are choices and consequences ... not just in riding motorcycles, but where you go and who you associate with. You have control over them but once you make your decision, they control you.''

Meanwhile, all players reported to the minicamp, the formal start to the final month of the Steelers' offseason workouts. Most players will remain in town through mid-June for ``coaching sessions,'' daily workouts that technically are voluntary but usually are fully attended.

Or his crazy agents will demand that Kellen be given a lifetime contract of something.

Looks like Cleveland will be another easy two wins for the AFC North competition.

How old is Ben -- 2?

Like a helmet would have done much good for Mr. Winslow...

I'm torn between my hatred of that fucking soldier (which makes me chuckle that he got hurt being a dumbass) and my wanting Romeo to do well as the Browns coach (and having a dynamic TE would certainly help him do well).

Unfortunately for Crennell, my dislike of Winslow II takes priority ...

Okay, what happend in this thing anyway. I just read he hit a curb while trying to learn to ride. how is that incredibly stupid. Unless he was doing something stupid and thats what really happend

I have no problem with the kid, besides holding out for that ridiculous contract( I have a problem with all Rookie holdouts. Play a fucking game first bitch THEN ask for more money) but his "fuckin soldier" line was overblown.

the soldier thing was bad timing more than anything...if it would have been said in 2000, it would have been kosher...his delivery of the line, though, is definently open to ridcule...

He was seen earlier in the day doing a wheelie, but that has nothing to do with his accident. The only stupid thing about his accident was that 35 is alittle too fast for a parking lot.

Reports on his injuries vary greatly, and none of them have yet sounded bad enough to end his career.

You know, for a nation of people ready to accept all kinds of prejudice and bigotry if it means giving a FU to the "overly PC " people out there, people sure did get really sore when it came to his remark. I guess its only cool to be Anti-PC when you aren't a athlete. Because he was the FIRST person to EVER draw the comparisons between the football field and a battle ground. NO ONE had EVER done that before.

Lushus, dude...I am ALWAYS relaxed. Seriously, if I haven't gotten slightly peeved at anything written on this board in the 4(has it been 4...geez....) years I been on this board, some Cleveland tightend isn't going to send me over the top.

And on a random note, according to our google ad, there is a cream that helps heal broken bones. maybe was should chip in and send Kellen some.

I thought it was a dumbass move for him to compare himself to a soldier while an actual war was going on ... like Lushus said, if it was before the whole "War in Iraq II" thing, it would have been fine. But it wasn't, and it was at a time when the news was dominated with stories about Americans dying. Anyone that had half a clue was treading lightly about using war analogies at the time.

And I referred to him being a dumbass because a fair amount of the reports indicate that he'd been speeding/showboating on bikes throughout the day, and that's not a bright move unless you're experienced enough on a bike to fuck around that way.

I equated Winslow's "soldier" comments more with a poor attempt at some street cred. I believe his comment was more hip hop influenced than anything. It comes off goofy because he's trying to come off like a bad ass, but he's had a very priveleged upbringing that doesn't make sense in the hip hop world. It would be like if Grant Hill said in an after game interview that he and his teammates need to "ride or die". It just comes off unnatural and stupid and "Hellen" Winslow deserves riducule for that, IMO.

What's incredibly stupid (not saying I agree with the sentiment that it's stupid, but just explaining why people feel it is) is that there's a specific clause in his contract to NOT RIDE MOTORCYCLES, and apparently, it's a fairly standard clause to put in the contracts of most NFL players.

Not like they seem to care about what's written in there anymore, anyways..

If I was in charge of the Browns, I would've cut him. This was without a doubt, highly unprofessional and he deserved to be dropped without a damn...

They have a lot more patience than I would with this.

The best/worst part of this (depending on how you look at it) is that the Browns, since Winslow violated the contract, have the right to recuperate almost all of Winslow's signing bonus and cut him without it counting against them, but can still reach a fair settlement with him so he could pay for his medical bills and all.
