Athlete you thought was gonna be great...

Pedro Astacio

Ramon Martinez

Those are a few Dodgers that never turned out the way I expected.

Ramon Martinez? He won 123 games for the Dodgers! Pedro Astacio had very unimpressive peripherals in the Dodgers' farm system, and I am surprised he turned out as good as he did. Offerman I could see.

In fact, for most of the baseball players mentioned in this thread, I haven't seen high prospects for any of them, save Rafael Soriano. And Rsssh, I'm surprised you didn't mention Ryan Anderson.

J.J. Stokes. Although he has had a decent career, I was thinking of a SFO career along the lines of what Owens did alongside of him.

Brandon Knight.

David Terrell.

Kurt Thomas. Given his final season in college, I'd say he has been a bit disappointing.

With a few exceptions, this whole thread seems to have degenerated into taking a player who was never projected to be anything more than just good, and saying, "See, I thought he should've been a Hall of Famer."

I mean, Brad Isbister? C'mon.

Shaun King got shafted by the Bucs...he was the future, but I guess Brad Johnson is better.

Shaun King cared more about eating cheeseburgers than studying his playbook.

how about the brothers of people who were thought to be the better of the two:

Ozzie Canseco

and

(I just forgot his name but he is Pedro MArtienez brother, was so highly sought after that during his rookie year you had to have his autograph if your were a collector, now you can buy a stack for a dime).

Ozzie was never any good, really. People who though he was any kind of prospect were just fooling themselves.

He's writing a book about living in Jose's shadow...and to promote it, he's offering hitting lessons.

Seriously.

I think I could give better hitting lessons than Ozzie Canseco. He makes Jeremy Giambi look good, and Jeremy Giambi is the only player to ever take performance enhancing drugs and get WORSE.

Jarious Jackson?  From Notre Dame?  They haven't produced a good QB since Joe Montana graduated.

Yes him. I thought he'd be a decent passer but a great scrambler in the NFL.

Another ND player I thought would do well- Tony Rice.

Jackson wasn't even that good in college, what made you think he'd be a good NFL player? And Tony Rice? All he could do was run the option, and those QB's never pan out in the NFL.

Spiff, then clearly you're a better judge of ND talent than me. In Sports Illustrated, they were hyping Jackson as a great runner and an ok passer. I bought into the hype as of a result. Don't worry, I don't judge so lightly anymore.

Dion Glover....Really?

Can't say I have ever been suprised by bust, cause most guys that are bust I thought they would be, like Bobby Hurley, Matten Cleaves etc.

Corliss Williamson, I thought would be a bust and was alot better than I gave him credit for. I thought Elton Brand would be a bust, and he turned out to be a great player in the nba.

You know, I Felipe had come out after his freshman year when he was the most hyped man in America, I would have bitten, but he was pretty exposed in his next few years in college and was a forgotten product by they time he got to the NBA. I think Washington took him at 17 but they could have waited tillthe second round, because noone was clamoring over him anymore.

Vick and McNabb were both primarily option QBs in college, weren't they?

Yes but Vick and McNabb also had great arm strength as well, whereas Jackson and Rice were primarily athletes without the arm needed for the NFL.

The reason I said Ramon Martinez is because it seemed as if he would be THE guy in the rotation for many years. Instead he limps out of the game and didn't reach the expectations of many.

If any ND quarterback didn't live up to the hype, it was Rick Mirer.

How about Ron Powlus? I remember that guy being hyped big-time and he was just terrible.

Didn't Beano Cook say Powlus would win three Heismans before he left ND? Kiss of death.

Before I saw Dion Glover play I read an article in SLAM that had me watching out for him. Then I saw him play in the McDonald's All-American game and he did good...then I saw a few games at G-Tech. Yeah, I thought he'd be a good NBA player.

If Corliss Williamson had entered the draft after Arkansas' national title run, he would have been picked in the Top 3. That extra year I think exposed him and he dropped to 14 or so. Still, I thought he'd be a Barkley-type of player when I saw him.

This may tick alot of people off, but you kind of have to put this guy on the list:

Would this guy have had the kind of career he was hyped to have had he;

A) Stayed healthy. Perpetual knee problems would hamper him throughout his life. Still one of the fastest guys in the game, but would never be the same after tripping on that drangage divit in left field and

B) Lived alittle bit cleaner. He would always admit, right to his final days, that he could have been so much better had he not believed he only had 40 some years to be alive (his dad, brother and I think one of his sons all died very young by the same disease) and not been such the hard liver that he was and taken care of himself better

Who am I talking about?

Mickey Charles Mantle

Speaking of that.. Scotty Thurman.

Dwight Gooden and Darryl Strawberry

I wouldn't really complain about Gooden. He proved that he was worth something. Look at the lines in his first two years; they're awesome. He won fifteen games six times in his career. He definately showed that there was greatness there, so you couldn't really say that it was overhyped.

There's someone whose name is on the tip of my tongue. He had a ton of commercials out before he veen debuted, of him of just an absolute freak. Everybody said he was going to be the greatest thing ever and he just absolutely fizzled. I can't remember whether he held out after getting drafted to sign as a free agent or whether that was JD Drew, but they were drafted around the same time IIRC.

Drew Henson in...well, pick a sport.

The Mets' young pitching triumvirate of the late 90s were hailed as the next great rotation. I think they were Jason Isringhausen, Bill Pulsipher and Paul Wilson. All of them fit.

That was Drew, who held out from the Pirates for the team he wanted to play for, the Cardinals.

The first case doesn't ring a bell.
