Biggest OVERacheievers

Recommended Posts

Who overachieved the most?

I'm expecting about 200 responses of JBL, but who else?

Did Billy Gunn really deserve 7 Tag Title Runs and a King of The Ring? Considering Bret, Owen, HHH, Austin, Angle and Lesnar are all KOTR champs, I say no.

On that note, add Viscera/Mabel. No business any higher than upper midcard. And from a booking standpoint, I mark out for monster heels.

I'm also fully aware I mis spelled overachievers in the topic.

Anyone who was ever WWF/E champion and weighed less then 240 lbs. overachieved in my eyes. Getting Vince to put the title on you when you're not a big guy is an incredible accomplishment.

Bret Hart?

The guy is one of my favorite workers, ever, but here's a guy who was barely six feet, under 250 pounds, and the straight man on his tag team. He's a decent promo guy, but he's ever been on the level of the guys like Rock, Austin, Hogan, Flair, etc. And yet this guy worked his way up the ladder to become a five-time WWF champion, at one point synonymous with the company. It's not that he didn't deserve any of it, because he's phenomenal in-ring, but the fact that he did so in the valley of the giants is pretty astounding.

Brock, Orton, Batista

I don't think it's fair to toss Batista in there.

Orton and Brock both got huge pushes and were given the title pretty early on, Brock moreso then Orton.

Whereas Batista was D-Von's lackey for a while, then he was some guy in Evolution, then once the fans warmed up to him, he started to get the big push to the title.

It just seems to me that Brock and Orton were always going to be champions, whereas Batista just managed to get over with the fans and eventually get that spot.

Billy Gunn had 10 tag title runs (3 w/ Bart Gunn, 5 w/ The Road Dogg, 2 w/ Chuck).

Since the tag titles are the pinnacle of mediocrity and have no importance, I'd say Gunn was a perfect fit to be the "Arn Anderson/Bobby Eaton" (ha!) of WWE.

Technically, overachieving would be if you got somewhere despite not having the usual 'credentials' to be there.

Vis has the size and he was never anything more than the 'big guy'. He got pushed, but he flopped. I wouldn't call that overachieving. Ditto Batista. He has the physique and he's got the cool factor. I wouldn't say him being where he is was over achieving. As long as you have something to justify being where you are, when you reach it, you haven't really 'overachieved'.

I'd say Luger overachieved. He got beyond the 'muscle man' tag and had a decent run near the top in WCW and the WWF, despite lacking a lot of in-ring ability and natural charisma. He was more successful than he ever should have been.

i would say Jericho, for such a small guy going from Cruiserweight champ to winning the WCW and WWF title the same night it's a big step up. Plus he has the record for most IC championships, and has won like every title there has been in WCW,WWF multiple times.

Hogan. He was a bald, bad promo giving, bad ring performer. If you really think about it, he didn't have the look since he started balding, was orange, and didn't really have the greatest of bodies in the sport at the time, he really gave shitty promos as he just kinda yelled alot, and he was pretty boring and paint by numbers in the ring. Even as a mark, you knew what was coming in a hogan match. Heels finisher, hogan kicks out and hulks up yadda yadda yadda wins match. Yet he is the most over wrestler in the recent history of the sport.

Davey Boy Smith. He had decent talent, but he was always considered by far to be the weakest of the team. Then DK got hurt, and Davey Boy got all the glory.

On the same topic, Rick Steiner. He was always over as a midcarder in the 80s, but then he managed to leech off of his brother for the next 12 years and build a good career for himself.
