Last night, I went to see Doug Stanhope. I didn't really know the appropriate venue to discuss, so here is good.

 

It was strange, going to a comedy show that was standing room. Yeah. It was a music venue. Stanhope's crowd is... losers, psychos, drunks, or just generally, let's say, left-hand path type folks. People were throwing beer glasses around and shit. Stanhope himself... trashed, as usual, and still awesome. He did about 70% new material. One of the funniest moments was when he did his classic child porn bit, and he says "I would watch child porn..." and then he has to pause to collect his booze scrambled thoughts, so it looked like there wasn't even a punch line, just that he would watch child porn.

Eh, writing is worthless as a profession. Unless you're planning to become a novelist, which you probably are since you're the most urbane dude here and you read a lot of books. But a degree in professional writing? That's bullshit and it won't get you anywhere. Well, scratch that. Won't get ME anywhere. I suppose going through the rigors of higher education will give you the benefit of more knowledge. But that piece of paper won't take you anywhere. (Yeah, I know you wanted to go to grad school. But just graduating once should mean something, shouldn't it? More and more I'm feeling like my bachelor's degree is worth about as much as passing middle school.) I'm a college graduate and my parents want me to take a job at a fucking gas station so I can pay my car insurance. Don't they know my friends are going to laugh at me?

 

I wanted to respond to this, but felt that doing so in the CE folder would take that thread scandalously off-topic and probably raise somebody's ire. But, listen, if you have to take a job at a gas station, then so be it. I didn't want to do it, either, but I did. In the process, I made some pretty good contacts should I ever want to start smoking crack. Plus, I saw some things--horrible things, unspeakable things--that I hope to someday write about. And chicks dig bullet wounds, so whatever. I say go for it.

 

I'd really like to have a college degree just so that I could have some sort of hope for the future, but I've had plenty of friends over the years who have similarly lamented having gotten a degree in something that didn't really create a lot of job opportunities for them. Where are the jobs, man? I'm to the point where I just want to be one of those office blobs at the Pit. In fact, that sometimes sounds like almost too much to ask of life.

It was fun to stay up late and be one of the first people to get to see the aired version of Smackdown, and also because I didnt actually get UPN and couldnt watch it otherwise. I cant watch SD anymore now due to not having MNTV so I have to wait for the german dude on youtube to upload it...ugh.

Yes, the two were unrelated, though I was mistaken in saying you were at work. I think you were in the Gulag or something, I don't remember. Either way the concept carried over to here.
