Time Magazine's "All Time 100 Movies"

Guest The Iron Yuppie

The Time Magazine website has recently posted a list of what its critics consider to be the "all time 100 films". As they state that the purpose of their list is to discuss or argue over, I'm posting the list (which is unranked) here for that very purpose.

As for the list itself, while it is far from being focused on English language films (and the inclusion of silent films like Metropolis is a good thing), there are a number omissions that stand out, particularly with some of the films by Hitchcock (no Rear Window, Vertigo, Rebecca or North by Northwest), Woody Allen (no Annie Hall or Manhatton) and Orson Welles (no The Third Man or The Magnificen Ambersons).

For me though, the major omissions are Amadeus, Gone with the Wind, Network and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

I haven't seen alot of the moves listed, but it's good to see a list with some variety and not just the typical movies you find on such lists from mainstream sources.

Finding Nemo (2003)

The rest of the list is decent to good. But THIS...no. Just plain wrong.

This isn't too different than the AFI list that came out 8 years ago.

Where the hell's "The Bridge on the River Kwai" or "Sunset Blvd"?

Blade Runner (1982)

Blade Runner had good special effects for when it was made, and its art direction inspired many films that came after it, but it made the mistake of trying to stretch 60 minutes worth of story into a full length movie.

This list is goofy. Star Wars is on here but not either of the other two in the trilogy (yet all 3 LOTR). Any list without GWTW is a farce as well, especially when listing stuff like Invasion of the Body Snatchers...I mean it's a nice little 50s sci fi movie but not exactly top 100 ever material.

Why would Baby Face be on this list? I hardly think that movie is THAT critically acclaimed, just typical old school pre code Warners goodness but not a **** movie.

Oh and no Marx Bros. stuff? No Night at the Opera or Duck Soup? What the fuck is wrong with these idiots?

Finding Nemo (2003)

I was actually happy to see Nemo on the list. Very underrated at times.

And I'm glad Scarface isn't on the list.

Well, let's remember that we're comparing a list of top 100 movies from everywhere with one of the top 100 American ones. Any how, it's good to see Metropolis get some loving. Grab the Kino version of that if you can, the cheapo DVDs of it suck. Unfortuantely, I haven;t seen a lot of these movies, but I'm suprised to see no Miyazaki on there, especially after everyone got a hard on for Spirited Away(which I really liked, but the end felt rushed). I'd say he'd be better represented by Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds or Princess Mononoke, though

Invasion of the Body Snatchers made the list? That's strange...(Granted, I do love that movie)

And I'm glad Scarface isn't on the list.

As much as I enjoyed that movie, I'll admit I found parts of it really cheezy and too over-the-top (the Moroder soundtrack didn't help).

The list was created to inspire debate/arguing/discussion. I've only seen 1/5 of the films on the list, but it's refreshing to see a list of this type that differs from what we usually get.

I think Ravenbomb's list makes it even more surprising he's only now graduating from high school.

His list also proves that I'd have no problem getting along with him, when it comes to movies. Of the movies on his list that I've seen, I like all of them.

The probem with these type of threads, is that they usually end up being a bunch of people just bitching about so and so being left off, instead of discussing the list.

Well, it's definitely a gutsy list. I mean, they clearly know Kurosawa's work, but don't have Seven Samurai on there. Drunken Master II is an interesting choice. Lots of gangster movies there, and not many comedies at all (at least out of the movies I've seen). No Duck Soup OR Modern Times. Unforgiven but no Wild Bunch. Finding Nemo but no Miyazaki movie or Fantasia? Heresy. Hitchcock's done multiple movies that were better than Psycho.

Plus the fact that it gave Oliver Stone the right to do ANYTHING he wants to. If it weren't for Scarface, Stone would be making porn or something.

God I hate him.

I looked at the list a bit more and Detour is on there? What in the fuck? If there is a more overrated, overhyped B grade 40s noir I have yet to see it. I even like Edgar G. Ulmer stuff, but this dingy cut rate film has zero business making a top 100 list, especially when you see that they left off true classics like Murder, My Sweet, The Big Sleep, and The Maltese Falcon.

Oh, and where's stuff like The Adventures of Robin Hood and The Prisoner of Zenda?

Ravenbomb makes me feel better about myself, seeing as how just last night I had to explain to two people what Return of the Jedi was about.

blech. I get the same thing a lot, or did before I got the hell out of that school.

Except for the fact that my g/f still goes there, but still...
