"Warner finally unburies the Tales From The Crypt

May 13, 2005

 

Warner Home Video has just announced that they are finally beginning to release the horror TV series Tales From The Crypt as season box sets, in response to the overwhelming demand from the show’s fan base.

In July the studio will release Tales From The Crypt: The Complete First Season featuring all six episodes that marked the beginning of a cult classic plus a coffin full of bonus features.

These bonus features include a Cryptkeeper Introduction, the AMC Documentary Tales from the Crypt: From Comic Books to Television, and a Cryptkeeper Photo Gallery narrated by the Cryptkeeper.

“Tales From The Crypt: The Complete first sEason” will be available on DVD on July 12 for a mere $26.95, so make sure you don’t miss this grand occasion."

It sure does deserve it. This show used to scare the hell out of me as a kid so that makes it a great one in my book. Hell it still creeps me out in reruns.

the one that used to scare the shit out of me was the fat guy who was married to Demi Moore. She was trying to plan his death and he became insane and stabbed the shit out of her saying "If I cant have you.........noone can" over and over.

 

 

 

A funny one was Joe PEsci dating the twins, and they find out at the end and split him in half with a saw so they both can have him.

 

 

 

Anyone remember these?

yeah the Demi Moore one was one of the first episodes i remember seeing so i always think of it first when talkin about TFTC.

 

same with the one with the two guys playing card and putting everything on the line, betting their fingers and arms.

yea she married him cuz a psychis told her if she did, she would get rich. but it wasnt the marriage that made her rich, she won a contest at store by being the millionth customer or somethin. she goes home and packs up and tells him shell leave him so he stabs her. crazy stuff.

"You said you wanted him... and you said you wanted her... now you both have EACH OTHER... HAHAHAHA!!" one the creepier epidoses I remember.

 

Other ones I like are the John Litghow plastic-surgery one, the salesman meets that weird farm family and the one where the guy wants this woman so he meets this person for some sort of potion and the woman become sadistic.

 

One of the better made-for-cable t.v. show ever.

I always thought TFTC was scary as hell when I was growing up and I remember there being some major buzz when the show first went into syndication, regarding episodes being heavily censored for graphic content and Fox (who had a six month exclusive on the show) being unable to air a bunch of the episodes do to them being too graphic for network TV even with massive cuts.

 

I remember staying up on Saturday nights around midnight to watch the show on my local ABC affiliate and being scared as fuck with the episodes. But having watched the show when it was recently aired in heavy rotation on Sci-Fi Channel and AMC in recent years, I'm afraid it doesn't really hold up scary-wise. There are still a bunch of great episodes but sadly the scare isn't there except for maybe a couple of episodes...

 

That said, anyone know what episodes aired during the first season and as such will be in the first DVD set?

But.....it's only six episodes?  Fuck that.

 

Don't be so bitchy about it; for thirty books it's dirty cheap compared to other HBO sets or even for anime releases of similar sized shows.

 

Also as for the episodes collected, I went to TV tome and found which ones will be on the set:

 

1. Man Who Was Death: A former executioner turns vigilante when the death penalty is banned but gets caught just as capital punishment is restored and is sentenced to death. Was heavily editted when it aired in reruns do to gratuitous nudity....

 

2. All Through The House: Woman kills her husband on Christmas Eve only to be killed by a psycho dressed up like Santa

 

3. Dig That Cat... He's Real Gone: A homeless guy gets nine lives via a scientist who he later kills and becomes a millionaire when he becomes a freakshow attraction via his ability to come back to life. But his greed and ignorance towards how many lives he has left ends up putting him in the ground, buried alive with several lives left. Stars Joe Pantoliano (AKA Cypher from the Matrix/Ralphie from The Sopranos).

 

4. Only Skin Deep: An Evil Hooker played by Lea Thompson pawns her beauty for money so she can get fancy clothing/jewelry so she can sneak into a party and land a rich sugar daddy. She lands a rich boyfriend but suddenly finds herself rapidly aging into an old hag, which causes her to kill her sugar daddy and being forced to stay old lest she get recognized and arrested.

 

5. Lover Come Hack To Me: Man marries a woman and plans to kill her on their wedding night so he can get her money but things go to hell when the wife, who's got a screw loose do to the horrific secret involving her own parents' honeymoon and the tragedy that happened on that night ends up making her hubby fear for his life.

 

6. Collection Complete: One of the imfamous "banned" episodes that Fox couldn't air when they first showed the series, involves an elderly couple who's husband retires and decides to occupy his time killing all of his wife's beloved pets and stuffing them as keepsakes, much to his wife's horror. So she plans her own evil revenge to make her husband pay for his animal killings.

I'm afraid it doesn't really hold up scary-wise. There are still a bunch of great episodes but sadly the scare isn't there except for maybe a couple of episodes...

To be fair, the point wasn't to scare, but to do the twist at the end.

yeah they were never meant  to be scary, maybe a little creepy sometimes but i never saw them as horror

Some are horror, some are Twilight Zoneesque with a twist and message to them. The scariest one to me as a kid as I mentioned before wa sthe Haunted House one with Morton Downey Jr.
