This Week In Baseball

I need to point out here how awesome Steve Lyons was today during the Phils/Braves game. He is the first announcer I can ever recall hearing talk about how men left on base was an overrated stat (Phils are no.1 in the league IIRC) and how he would take it anyday of the week since it means you are getting men on base.

Fantastic bottom of the ninth at The Rogers Centre. Down 4-1, Aaron Hill shows incredible patience and knocks a two run double. 4-3, 1 out.

Awesome, except that Nathan's on my fantasy team, and even though he still got the save, that 18.00 ERA looks like shit.

That's a lot of commas.

The better part of that game was Eddie Perez coming out with the grounds crew.

Tigers are showing why, with some time and perhaps a few more players, they could be a serious contender in the AL Central.

The Orioles showing why, they are not for real.

I wouldn't say that. Their starting pitching has been top-notch for the most part this season and the end of their pen has been lights out. The problem could lie in middle relief. People also don't give the Tigers' offense as much credit as they probably should, myself included.

Oh, Lord. Latroy Hawkins is making his Giants debut in a tie ballgame. I'm holding my breath.

A 1-2-3 inning, but with him and Benitez (when he comes back) in the same pen, I can't imagine any lead being safe.

I think you'll be surprised and pleased with Hawkins. Remember, he was one of the top set-up men in the game before the Cubs forced him into the closer's role. He's in a pitcher's ballpark surrounded by fans who aren't going to boo him out of the place just for taking the mound. Plus, he threw like six change-ups in his debut inning. I don't think he threw that many in his entire season with the Cubs.

I heard today that Eric Chavez became a born again Christian this past offseason. That explains everything! When will athletes learn that Satan can hit a curveball better than Jesus Christ?

It's still their first three game losing streak of the year, they still have a three game lead in the AL East, and they still have the second best record in the American League.

What exactly is your definiton of "for real"?

It's only May 29th kids. Have we forgotten that the last two WS champs have had the best records in the second half of the season?

Problem is, the Giants still don't have a reliable 9th inning pitcher. The inevitability of Hawkins closing, when he shouldn't be, is what makes me nervous.

Better than Tyler Walker as the closer.

Wells needs to be released the second Francona pulls him out of this game(which will probably be in the 3rd inning at the latest).

Thank god he knows he sucks now and signed an incentive based contract.

Just got back from the game, and Mussina was god awful. Its been hit or miss with him the whole year. If his fastball is 91-94, hes great. If hes 86-89 like it was tonight, hes awful.

Yeah, the Orioles pretty much raped Boston today. They were actually on television for a change, so I got to watch, and it was super. By the end of the third inning, the game was pretty much over.

Of course, Arroyo was absolutely lost out there, didn't throw a single strike with his fastball, and didn't have much control of his breaking ball either, but still.... the Orioles were about as dominant as they could possibly be facing the second best team in the division.

Wolmack just might have commited one of the stupidest plays I've ever seen. First and third, one out with A-Rod up, and he GETS PICKED OFF. Where the HELL ARE YOU GOING TONY, or do you WANT TO TAKE AN AB AWAY FROM A-ROD?

Christ.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Juan Gone came and went.

Juan Gonzalez, sidelined all season because of strained right hamstring, was activated by the Cleveland Indians from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday. Hours later, he reaggravated the injury while running out a grounder in the first inning -- his first major league at-bat since May 21, 2004.

Um ya retirement is probably a good idea right about now.

And the Yankees lose to Kansas City, because dumbass Torre can't figure out that Bernie can't catch shit in center anymore. He cost us two runs, and add in the fact the Yankees have one non HR run in the last 6 six games, you can see why they lost to god damn Kansas City.

Thanks for the info Mike as of course I cant see the game. It would appear that the Yanks arent hitting again. The offense appears to be the key for them, cuz if the pitching isnt great, they need to come from behind and sometimes they cant. I knew this would happen after a three week hot streak. But at least the os lost so no ground lost in the east race. Some deals are going to be have to be made before the break and deadline, obviously.

Why is Bernie still in CF then? damn. He still gets some hits but cant field. why not dh him more often?
