NBA Offseason Stuff

Recommended Posts

You heard it here first (as far as tsm goes), this season Darko will become a real player rather than a victory cigar! By late in the season he'll be able to come off the bench and be good for 6-10 points and a few rebounds, in-game not garbage minutes. Mark my words!!!

Oh, it's not my main focus when drafting a player or something, but when I'm sifting through the free agent pool, I'm going to begin to look for the next Bobby Simmons or Eric Dampier in their contract seasons.

James Jones from phoenix should be available on most everyones board and he is slated to get a starting spot with Amare down.

Besides him, I would look to Zarko Carbarkapa in Golden State, Josh Smith if you need blocks and rebounds, Sam Cassell (hey, he is really available in most places) and Melvin Ely or Gerald Wallace. All should be really solid.

It's as if they think they're going to make the playoffs and need the big guys or something.
Why wouldn't they? Are there really eight teams in the east that are clearly better than Milwaukee? Maybe if they were relying on Bogut, but with this trade, they clearly seem ready to make a push right now.

I mean, six are probably a lock (Indiana, Detroit, Miami, New Jersey, Chicago, Philadelphia), but I think that Milwaukee, Cleveland, New York, Washington, Boston and possibly Orlando will be in a dogfight for the last two spots.

Actually, I think Philly and Chicago will not improve and Philly is one Iverson injury away from the lottery. Cleveland made significant upgrades to where they will make the playoffs and Washington will be there. I think Orlando has a better shot, but then again, that's just me. I'm not impressed with Milwaukee, although TJ Ford will determine how far they go, not Bogut or Redd.

One Iverson injury? He plays an entire season with ten different injuries. The Sixers are a playoff team, no doubt. Iguodala and Korver both made significant contributions last year, with both expected to improve this year. The problem areas with the team is the frontcourt, but Salmons will probably do no worse than Webber when he expectedly steps into the starting lineup by January. Dalembert is a toss-up as to what he could do, but let's say he produces equal statistics to last season, which at least doesn't leave the center position as a liability to Philly. I predict a six or seven seed for the 76ers, at their best or worst.

As for Chicago, they don't have to improve this year. They were a 4 seed last year, which is a bit of an overachievement for a young team. Still, I don't see why people don't buy them as a solid playoff team. The Curry trade was a wash that sets the Bulls up for the upcoming offseason(s). There's nothing about Curry's departure that hurts their team, because the points can and will come from somewhere else, opening up a position for a guy like Sweetney who CAN rebound. Second-chance opportunities was their weakness for the entire 2004-2005 season, simply because they couldn't get any. The team defense is one of the best in the league, too. They have a deep bench that they can go to, unlike some of the teams above them and all of the teams below them on the conference totem pole.

Cleveland made significant upgrades to where they will make the playoffs and Washington will be there.

Cleveland may inherit the Wizards' spot, because the Wizards sure as hell won't be there.

I think Orlando has a better shot, but then again, that's just me. I'm not impressed with Milwaukee, although TJ Ford will determine how far they go, not Bogut or Redd.

Orlando has a favorable division and a monster in Dwight Howard. But, who do they bump to get into the playoffs? Boston is an equally talented team, as well.

If everyone stays relatively healthy, my playoff seeding:

1. Detroit

2. Indiana

3. Miami

4. New Jersey

5. Chicago

6. Philadelphia

7. Cleveland

8. Boston/Washington/Orlando

If Skiles can keep getting good production out of Chandler, Nocioni, Duhon, Gordon, Deng, and the bench, there's no reason why the Bulls can't make the playoffs again even without Curry. He was really inconsistent, anyway. Despite improvements to the Cavaliers, I feel they'll falter down the stretch again. Is Larry Hughes REALLY that good?

Kidd, Carter and RJ all together for one year; Krstic is going to be pretty good, and the division blows.

They got Vince Carter, who was magically able to stay healthy after getting a trade from Toronto, plus RJ was injured for most of last season, as well. They'll win the division, but Philly will give them a run if they're able to click for a whole season.

Denver finishing behind the Lakers? I mean, I think LA will make the playoffs again, but nah.

I might even be ranking the Lakers too low. From what I've seen this preseason, Kwame Brown could put up big numbers and Smush Parker isn't nearly as bad as I thought he would be. The Lakers just have to play defense.

I don't see phoenix falling below 4.

I don't even count this year in the NBA. This is the "who is going to come close to beating San Antonio" race. I personally think you could hand those guys the ring now and call it a day.

So everyone's counting Minnesota out already? They went from 1 seed to lottery team last year because of chemistry issues and underachieving, not lack of talent. They're not a top team anymore, but they'll make the playoffs before the Lakers or Warriors do.

Minnesota can very well surprise people, but on paper there isn't much there. They have a top 3, all-universe player in KG, but what follows is a bunch of question marks. Wally hasn't jived with KG for awhile and is now in year 2 of wanting out. Olowakandi is a bust. Cassell is gone. Spree is gone (which is actually a good thing). Trenton Hassell is a good, but he's a role player. About the only bright spot I've seen is Rashad McCants. Still, with KG, the T-Wolves will be in most games he plays in.
