Kenyon Martin no longer wants to be affiliated with the University of Cincinnati because the school forced coach Bob Huggins to resign.

 

The forward, one of only three players to have his number retired by the Bearcats, expressed his displeasure during a charity event honoring the coach Thursday night. Martin said he'd like to have his number un-retired and taken off the wall at the arena.

 

"This is personal between me and the university," Martin said, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. "The way I feel, I want my name no longer affiliated with the University of Cincinnati. I would like them to take my jersey down and get rid of my locker and my trophies."

 

Coaches Rick Pitino of Louisville, Tubby Smith of Kentucky, Bobby Lutz of Charlotte, and John Calipari of Memphis, as well as former players and fans attended the roast, which will benefit Huggins' Emanuel Center charity and the Salvation Army's Hurricane Katrina fund.

 

Huggins thanked Cincinnati and its fans, and told the appreciative crowd he'll be back on the sidelines eventually.

 

"I'm going to coach again," Huggins said, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. "I don't have any idea where. I'm not one of those guys that's going to run around hoping someone gets fired. That's for sure. I've never lived my life that way. ... If the right opportunity comes, then we'll do it."

 

His fellow coaches expect to see him there soon.

 

"He'll be missed, but it will be the same way it went for Bob Knight when he left Indiana," Pitino said. "I think this will rejuvenate Bob [Huggins] and get him to sort of see where he wants to have his last stint coaching, where he wants it to be. Follow the teams, maybe do a little TV work. Get back into it the way he wants."

New York Post - As the Knicks continue to be linked to Bulls' restricted free agent Eddy Curry, multiple versions of events are appearing in multiple papers.

 

According to the New York Post, Curry has told friends the Knicks are still in the mix. The deadline for Curry to re-sign with the Bulls for their one-year, $5.1 million qualifying offer has been pushed back from today to Monday.

 

The holdup in a Knick-Bull deal is the Bulls' refusal to take one of the Knicks' two first-round picks next year. The Bulls prefer a young player added to the package, such as David Lee or Trevor Ariza.

 

Michael Sweetney and Tim Thomas have been offered in a variety of packages.

 

Curry's agent, Leon Rose, said: "There's been a lot of discussions the last 48 hours with the Bulls regarding a sign-and-trade

Paxson, speaking during the team's media day, told reporters the Bulls had offered Curry $400,000 annually for the next 50 years if he failed the genetic test.

 

"So he would have an above-average lifestyle that would put him in a position that most other people aren't in," Paxson said. "Our intention through that whole process was to show him that we did care about him and that we were concerned about his well-being."

The Knicks will send forwards Tim Thomas and Mike Sweetney, and a first-round pick in the 2006 draft, to the Bulls, according to an Eastern Conference team executive who had knowledge of the deal. The Knicks will receive Curry, the veteran forward Antonio Davis and possibly draft picks. For salary-cap purposes, the Knicks will also sign and immediately trade guard Jermaine Jackson to Chicago.

Instead, Curry will sign a five-year deal, believed to be worth about $10 million in the first season, with Chicago, then be shipped to the Knicks. Curry will be reunited with guard Jamal Crawford, one of his best friends in the league. They were teammates for three years in Chicago.

 

...and according to ESPN Radio, Davis will be released by the Knicks, then re-signed by the Bulls.

Curry is a legit offensive low post presence, dude can score, so for that I'm happy. I do wonder how he'll react to Brown's coaching style though.

 

Glad to see Tim Thomas hit the road, he brought nothing to the table for the Knicks. Q-Rich will be a better small forward, and Ariza gets more minutes, win-win there.

 

On paper the team is improved by this move, no doubt, but it's a little bittersweet losing Sweetney, when it looked like he finally had his chance to play a bigger role. He'll be a good pairing with Chandler, absolute fiend on the boards.

Well to me I was only unhappy that Davis was traded along with Curry because he was a great veteran leader, but reading that the Knicks will release him and he will be back in Chicago makes me feel better. I think it was time for Eddy to go, it was obvious he and his agent were nothing more then pains in the ass for Paxson and Chicago. Looking on this upcoming season it will be awhile before Eddy comes close to being in the shape he was in last season anyway, so good riddance. I doubt he will be a favorite of Larry Brown early on anyway, as playing good defense is not what Eddy Curry does. So it will be interesting to see how it all plays out there, but I won't miss Eddy in Chicago at all.

A: Eddy Curry is fucking stupid for not taking that deal with the Bulls (400,000 anually for 50 goddamn years)

 

B: I do believe that Chicago came off like bandits in this trade. Sweetney and Thomas for Curry....yeah...I would take that. Plus they get to keep Davis.

I agree on both points. I like the new younger forwards the Bulls have now, who will actually have good defense and rebounding that Eddy rarely ever did anyway. There will be good competition for playing time, and I think Skiles will get these guys to hustle. I am also ready to see what all the hype of Sweetney is all about.

The Sweetney-Curry swap is an even one given that Curry's health is a concern, but the key is that both do different things. Sweetney is a rebounder by trade, he can score on the inside, he's not a post presence that you can run an offense through like Curry, but he will dominate the boards. Curry isn't a great rebounder, but the offense makes up for it, and the Knicks have other guys who can board. I think Brown is going to start Curry-Rose-Richardson on the front line, and for 2/3 being undersized they should hold their. Marbury is a good rebounder for a PG, though he doesn't always show it.

 

From what I've read Paxson was holding out for Ariza or David Lee to be included, but Isiah wouldn't budge, and as the Bulls had no other takers on Curry were forced to make the deal. Tim Thomas will get no run for Scott Skiles as he doesn't play much defense and has to battle Deng and Nocioni for time.

Indeed. I was reading an article about the 2006 free agent class, outside of Peja Stojakovic and Ben Wallace it isn't too promising, and I can't see the Pistons not locking up Ben Wallace soon. Nene is a restricted FA, and he might be an interesting fit on Chicago.

Rockets trade Mike James to Toronto for Rafer Alston. This says a few things to me.

 

1) Mike's looking for his shot instead of passing the ball was noticed.

 

2) His promise to take the most money when he hits the FA market led the Rockets to try to get something for him.

 

3) The Van Gundys talked about Alston's reported attitude problem (Jeff told the team at media day yesterday he "wouldn't coach any knuckleheads" anymore).

 

4) Bob Sura's knee isn't healing as well as the Rockets are insisting.

 

Still, all in all, I like it. James was better suited coming off the bench for the Rockets while Alston can step in and start at least until Sura is healthy.

Thomas will probably be moved again.

 

The best part of this is that the Knicks still have Hardaway. That is 14 million that they can move for another piece.

 

I see the Knicks starting Marbury, Richardson, Curry, James and Houston when he become available. James is getting paid too much to not start, but he also is a foul per minute so Frye will be in to back him up and get the major minutes within 8 minutes into the game. they are solid with Rose as a backup PF, Ariza as a backup small, Robinson as a back up point, and Crawford as a back up at the two.

 

They are better on paper. now can brown bring it together.

I have had the recurring "Marion for Peja" dream for the last few years. I fear this trade. I will not stop worrying about it until Peja is a free agent. But I still worry to this day.

Anyway, the Curry trade, it's simple. If he's healthy, it's a steal, because Sweetney yes he can score in the post, but he's not a good defender and gets like 20 fouls a minute. He's not a monster rebounder after teams adjusted to him, and Tim Thomas we all know. Curry isn't a good rebounder, but we need a low post scorer badly. He's also 6'11 285, 22-23 years old, and we have him locked up for the next 6 years.

If Curry delivers the Knicks are going to have a good young team this year. I remember someone calling them the Phoenix Suns of the east. Allan Houston is also another good trading block next year I believe. He has a very large expring contract which would be great for a sign and trade.
