Change of announcers needed on Raw

Recommended Posts

When Cena came out, it really did feel like a massive occasion for WWE. Then JR opened his mouth and out came cliché after cliché. Ross said "This crowd is electricfied" and I immediately thought of the Rock. All I should have been thinking about as a viewer is Cena and how him coming to Raw would really shake things up.

Ross and King have been the announcers on Raw since 1998. These days, whenever they speak over an angle it just makes it seem a retread of anything that has happened before. When you've been announcing 8 years, you've got to be a genius to still have fresh material.

Today JR is fine when it comes to mid card matches and the like, but when it comes to the really big angles and matches... it just seems forced somehow.

It really is time for a change of announcers of WWE wants to make this feel like a new era and not the same old, same old. I don't need to hear JR make the same damn calls he made in 1998 when I'm supposed to be watching the hot new stars of 2005.

Who should replace him, I don't know. But does anyone know what I mean with this?

I wonder how a pairing of Joey Styles with Mike Tenay would sound? I can tell you that while they may not have chemistry, they'd be upgrades over hacks like Lawler and Cole.

I'll continue to insist that Matthews/Tazz were simply superb together.

Matthews is good at hyping Velocity main events, imagine how good he could be pushing the main show angles.

Worst Case Scenario: Romero & Grisham.

I can top that. Three-person announce team. Romero. Grisham. And the announcing antichrist... Ivory~!

I thought Lita was the announcing antichrist...

I still say Vince and Shane McMahon as a team would be...well...unique at the least.

Vince calling a Benoit/Tajiri match:"BELLY-TO-BACK GERMAN SUPLEXES BY BENOIT!! HE'S GOING UP TOP FOR THE DIVING HEADBUTT!! THIS COULD DO IT!! ONE......TWO.....HEGOTHIM--NOHEDIDN'T!"

Shane:"Oh yeah, baby! Benoit's beatin' the hell out of Tajiri, Pops!"

*Tajiri kicks Benoit in the head*

Vince:"COULD THIS DO IT?!?! ONE......TWO.....NO!! NO, NO, NO!! ONLY TWO!!"

Shane:"Benoit, tryin' to shake the cobwebs out from that kick and tryin' to regain some FIYAAAHH!! Yeah, baby, yeeaaahhhh!!"

Vince, in confusion:"Ummmm....word up, Shane???"

I want Tony Schiavone to come back. While he was supposedly an "asshole," he did a better job putting over angles and providing unintentional comedy than anyone.

He could do more good by calling Muhammed Hassan and Daivari "The most evil men ever to step into a ring in the history of this great sport" than anything WWE has done so far.

Lawler was getting a little thin three years ago.

Now his annoucing makes me want to rip out his trachea.

I didn't buy JR's forced enthusiasm for ECW last night.

I dont really have a problem with him, though.

Though I think Lawler's getting a little thin.

Lawler needs a change of scenery, and switching him with Tazz would provide far better commentating duos in my opinion. JR can still go when he doesn't have to shill for everyone and everything (as shown on a recent ep of Heat).

JR and Tazz could be a fine commentary team, as seen at Royal Rumble 2004.

Lawler and Michael Cole need to go. In six years of commentating on WWE TV, Cole hasn't improved a lick. Why are they possibly still hedging their bets with him when there must be a 1000 other people that could do his job better?

I think Cole's gotten a lot better because of Tazz. I wouldn't mind seeing a JR/Tazz combo, but that leaves SD out to dry.

Lawler's pretty stale. I honestly wouldn't mind Vince being back. He at least got you into the match.

Lawler is lame. I was so sad to see him return after he was fired for sticking up for Stacy Carter. Very upsetting because he has gotten worse over the last 3 years.

I disagree with you Hartfan. The only improvement I've seen Cole go from was God awful to just plain awful. He still fucks up move names and just sounds very generic. If this is his best, and I think it is since he's been the announcer since SD has been on, he needs to go. If Tenay or Styles were to come in and they'd have to fire Cole, I'd have no problem with that, not one bit. He's terrible. Just my opinion, but I'd rather them take a guy like Tenay or Styles or hell, develop someone new who I've never heard. Anyone but that schmuck.

Isn't Tenay with TNA though?

Unless I've missed something.

Because Kevin Dunn is only going to hire pretty young men who barely know anything about wrestling.

And sadly, Cole's better than Grisham, Romero, etc.

He is still with TNA, but that doesn't mean I can't want him to do broadcasts for WWE. TNA is will be finished before the year is out, hopefully WWE can get their heads out of their asses and throw this guy some money to do their shows. Lawler or Cole, doesn't matter to me, just get this guy in there for one of them is all I ask.

I think it's time for Lawler to go too, or at least scale him back to doing a B show, he brings nothing to the table at this point and brings out the worst in JR. JR needs someone who will keep him on his toes and challenge him, he's too fucking complacent sitting next to King, and I totally agree with the guy who started the topic about how he sounds like he's trapped in 98, and thought the unconvincing commentary really dulled the impact of Cena being drafted. The way he put it over, it just didn't feel convincing or genuine.

I don't know if he'd be interested in doing it again, but Heyman was excellent working with JR in 01. I think he's good enough to carry Cole to a good performance, better than he shows with Tazz, so I'd put them together on SD! and move Tazz to RAW. Tazz and JR have shown promise when they've called the Rumbles.

EDIT* And I know he's turned down Vince several times, but I'm crossing my fingers that when Raven retires he'll agree to an announcing gig, maybe if some writing responsibility was thrown in he'd bite, because Levy was an awesome color man during the Johnny Polo days.

I like Vince on commentary. Its better than sloberknockers and PUPPIES. I also like Austin, Jericho and Flair. I think it would be gold hearing Austin and Flair call matches together. What can I say, Raven rules.

You couldn't have Vince calling matches because no one would be able to delineate between Vince the commentator and Vince the Chairman of the Board — not even himself. He says he wants to walk away from the "Mr. McMahon" character, but he never seems to do it.

Heyman paired with Cole would either cause Cole to really step up his game or totally destroy whatever credibility he has. Heyman and JR would be interesting for a while if they kept bickering at each other, but the headset folks in the back would probably muzzle Heyman if he got too "smart". Austin and Flair would end up talking about themselves instead of hyping the matches.

I can see Josh Matthews stepping up at some point. He's enthusiastic, quick thinking, and shock of shocks, he actually knows wrestling. Plus he can take a beating.

And they really should have kept Lawler unemployed. He adds nothing to the broadcasts.

I dont think its entirely Coles fault. Hes the BUTT of many jokes and doesnt look credible because of it. Heyman and JR constant bickering is very annoying. I like Vinces enthusasism.
