bob_barron 0 Report post Posted June 21, 2005 Batman Begins opened on a Wednesday, which the other Batman's didn't. Also ajusted for inflation, except for maybe Batman and Robin, the numbers easily beat BB.
{''({o..o})''} 0 Report post Posted June 21, 2005 People are starting to get sick of the superhero movies, less a fault of the movie itself, and more because of the overabundance of the genre in recent years.
Guest SP-1 Report post Posted June 21, 2005 regarding all the B.O. compared to previous Batman movies, right now Batman Begins is strongly ahead of the other Batman movies (slightly ahead of Batman Forever) Batman Begins: $79,524,398 Batman and Robin: $55,845,233 Batman Forever: $72,177,183 Batman Returns: $66,242,712 Batman: $63,783,478 <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Stop wasting bandwidth. WB is pleased enough to be making noise about a sequel and who has signed on for it. Bob's in his box office nerd mode, so arguing will do you no good. You know what? Batman Begins smokes all the other movies. If it doesn't pull in money, if it never spawns a sequel, it WILL have earned its place in my collection with its integrity and commitment to the material over villain-marketability and over fantasy-tinged BS that doesn't belong in a Batman movie. You want to talk success and failure? Fine. Let's talk success and failure. Batman '89, Returns, Forever, and Batman and Robin were fantasy interpretations of a dark source material that lacked the emotional depth and grit of the characters and city. Batman: The Animated Series smokes them as far as faithfulness in translation, and so does Batman Begins. Those two maintained the integrity and spirit of the character and setting more than Burton and co. ever did. And for that, the upcoming SE editions of the 90's films gets a rental from me, but Batman Begins gets bought, no questions asked. Eventually so will The Animated Series. Wussing out on the character in favor of personal style (Burton and Joel) is ultimately failure in my books. Good, fun movies, but a failure on the overall mission. Nolan and Timm/Dini knocked it out of the park. So be let down out of nostalgia or whatever else if you want, but you're missing a great movie and a great story in the process. You're also missing the real heart of the characters. The people who are capable of letting go of what was before and enjoying a faithful effort will recognize it as the success that it is. cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted June 21, 2005 I think the Animated Series is easily the best Batman stuff I've seen...it had the visual style that I didn't think Begins really had. Spider-Man made more money because it's a newer series, plain and simple. The first one had the origin of Spidey AND a marketable villain in the Green Goblin, while the 2nd movie had another well known heel in Doc Ock. If you adjust the first couple Batman movies I'd think you would get similar numbers to Spidey now. Also, the Spidey trailers give you a good idea of what exactly will be taking place. In the first you get some action clips of Spidey vs. Goblin fights, a bit of other things...stuff that compels you to want to see it. The Batman Begins trailer takes forever to even show you that yes this is a Batman movie, and it doesn't really show you much in the way of compelling conflict or a villain (mostly just Liam Neeson blathering and some training montage). I personally think the Batman series is a bit far gone at this point, not necessarily quality wise but in terms of box office. Unless they wanna start doing total jobbers like Mad Hatter or Killer Croc there really aren't a huge amount of villains left. And if they reuse The Joker and Two Face for future movies there will be some that complain that "they have already done films with these guys."
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted June 21, 2005 No one is talking about the quality of the Bat films SP, so I don't see why you are getting so uptight about it. I'm just saying BB hasn't done that great at the box office. No need to be so pissy
Secret Agent 0 Report post Posted June 21, 2005 Yes, but Batman Begins is a good movie. Also, like mentioned before, the Batman franchise has a lot of shame to erase. Spider-Man was easily one of the most anticipated films ever, and the whole web swinging around the city captivates an audience. Thats what got people to see both Spider-Man films, not to mention that the franchise hasn't been totally wrecked like Batman was. BB puts this vechile back in the proper direction and I think it might be one of those films that picks up from word of mouth. I also want to see Mr. and Mrs. Smith unless someone here has already seen it and can tell me not to waste my money on it. Other future fun films I want to see are Land of the Dead, War of the Worlds, maybe Fantastic Four, and that Jamie Fox Stealth movie. I don't think the latter will be anything groundbreaking storywise but it looks fun. Oh, and I almsot forgot that the Island looks like another fun summer movie as well. Guest SP-1 Report post Posted June 21, 2005 I'm going to wait until August. I want to see the total haul for Begins during its main run. Then we'll see how poorly the box office did. Declaring it unsuccessful as a box office entity so quickly is just stupid.
Guest NaturalBornThriller4:20 Report post Posted June 21, 2005 Exactly. As far as i'm concerned, right now... this has been quite successful. It's no point on calling it a dissapointment or poorly until the finals numbers are in.
bobobrazil1984 0 Report post Posted June 22, 2005 true enough (to SP-1's post). hell my favorite movie ever is the shawshank redemption, which was a box office flop. This movie rawks (and "aw" makes it extra cool!), and i'm psyched about a (KatieHolmes-less) sequel.

I'm seeing Perfect Man again on Thursday, and I'll try to check out Batman this weekend.
cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted June 22, 2005 Spider-Man in 2002 was essentially the same hugely anticipated film that Batman was in 1989. By 2015 or so let's see if Spidey can still bring in gigantic box office when he's dicking around with The Shocker or whoever.
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted June 22, 2005 Tuesday's Box Office is out- Batman Begins fell about 19% from Monday to Tuesday, while Perfect Man rose 1%. Of course yesterday was the last day for Perfect Man to make any money, so it's all meaningless anyway. Other summer blockbusters Monday to Tuesday drops: Mr. and Mrs. Smith: 13% Star Wars: 31% Harry Potter: 14% I-Robot: 13% Bourne Supremacy: 7% Although it's hard to compare b/c of the Wednesday opening, in their 7th day of releases: Batman Begins has 84 million Batman and Robin had 59 Batman Forever had 77 Batman Returns had 71 Batman had
Guest NaturalBornThriller4:20 Report post Posted June 23, 2005 Is it just me or for reasons beyond, Bob wants to see this movie fail.
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted June 23, 2005 The only movie I want to see fail is Herbie. I'm just posting the box office numbers, considering it's one of the most talked about movies here. I fail to see the problem.
Dangerous A 0 Report post Posted June 23, 2005 I want any and all flicks starring Duff and Lohan to fail. Not to shit on you, bob, but I just can't stand these plastic gals with marginal acting ability.
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted June 23, 2005 Why? No one is forcing you to see them, so why does stuff that's meant to entertain young-teenage girls bother you? And regarding Lohan, she did show some good skills in Mean Girls. And I've mentioned RYV to death.
Dangerous A 0 Report post Posted June 23, 2005 I just don't like 'em. Sorry bob. I don't have a profound answer except I don't like them. Now, if they do succeed, I won't lose sleep or anything. My life doesn't revolve around their box office power or success. I just like seeing certain people get knocked down a peg or two.
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted June 23, 2005 I understand you don't like them, I mean at your age, I'd be surprised if you did. I just don't understand why you want them to fail, since you're never going to see them and they will never have any effect on you. Duff's movie career is pretty dead right now anyway. She did the smart thing and agreed to do Cheaper by the Dozen 2. If they're smart, they'll keep putting her in ensemble movies, where she doesn't have to carry a film
Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted June 23, 2005 Cheaper by the Dozen 2. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> EXCUSE ME???
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted June 23, 2005 They started shooting it last Tuesday in Toronto, and it's the movie she's shooting before her summer tour. Basically, Martin's family of 12 meets another big family with Eugene Levy as the dad. I didn't like Cheaper 1 on first viewing, but HBO shows it about twice a day, so I've seen it to the point that I can't hate it anymore. Cheaper 2 NEEDS an Ashton Kutcher cameo though. He owned the first one.
Dangerous A 0 Report post Posted June 23, 2005 Again, I like seeing them get knocked down a peg. Simple as that. Because it doesn't have an effect on the sun coming up or down in my world is insignificant. I guess it's because I'm becoming a surly, ol' bastard in my age who still likes to exercise a 14 year old level of immaturity sometimes

bob_barron 0 Report post Posted June 23, 2005 I want Herbie to fail just because I liked it better when it was Hilary>Lindsay and I hate that Disney feels the need to remake every film they made in the 60s and 70s. I try to have reasons other then 'I just do'.

Guest El Satanico Report post Posted June 23, 2005 Both reasons are silly and petty, but "I like Duff, so I want Lohan to fail" is a better reason than "Their careers don't affect me, but I want them to fail because i hate them".
Guest *KNK* Report post Posted June 23, 2005 What I dont get is why the more naturally talented teen actress Amanda Bynes doesnt get this movie roles and is reduced to a so-so under the radar WB sitcom and yet horrid wanna-bes like Lohan and Duff consistantly get more and more offers for failure bound vehicles.
cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted June 23, 2005 Well, Duff and Lohan are both no great shakes. You could probably go down to the nearby mall and find girls just as hot (or hotter) that could do the same roles. Lohan has been in a bit better movies though, but really needs to go back to the redhead look. I don't mind discussing Herbie because it might at least vye for #1 at the box office this week, but can we please drop this Perfect Man thing?

I think the distributors couldn't find a good time to release it in the summer. She's currently shooting the comedy 12 Nights in Vancouver with David Cross, it's based on the Shakespeare play. Amanda Bynes is pretty awesome, and I thought What a Girl Wants was a fun albeit too predictable movie. I like What I Like About You, and think they have done a good job with the big storylines, even though her character on the show can be quite unlikeable. Herbie opened to #3 yesterday doing about 2.7. It was expected to do between 5-7 over the two days. Perfect Man held up well, dropping only 9% from Tuesday's gross. I saw it again tonight, and it was much better the second time as the slow pace at the beginning didn't bother me. Still had some problems with a few scenes, and a mini-plot at the end with Holly, but I really enjoyed it.
