Yeah, three REALLY bad choices if you base it off this year. I'm more of a fan for recent history/reputation, but whatever.

Manny, Ortiz, Damon, Varitek all made the starting lineup.

Beltran, Rolen, who's third? Piazza's past his prime, but he's still producing numbers as good as the best catchers in the league

Yeah, I was going over catchers and realize it's not much better anywhere else, so it's not as bad as I would originally think.

There's a 12 pitcher requirement so that's why the N.L. 32nd man ballot is all pitcher's. The A.L. 32nd man ballot is a joke with Crawford and Podsednik on there. I'm absolutely loving the ESPN outcry for Jeter but shit he's the most deserving guy on there. Travis Hafner was robbed big time.

My vote goes to Torri Hunter.

Podsednik and Crawford may be a joke as an all-star possibility, but if the game really "means something" then they're very good options as a pinch runner if the game is close at the end and you either need a stolen base or a fast runner. Especially with the defensive capabilities of the NL catchers regarding throwing out runners.

True, but if the game counted would you ever take Bobby Abreu out of the game?

No, not a chance. That's why home-field in the World Series should not be on the line in a game where managers try to get everyone in and fans vote on starters.

I have no problems with the fans voting, and I think the mistakes are due to the process rather than the voting pool.

I agree. I mean, would it really that big of a deal if some fan that doesn't watch a baseball game the entire month of June has to go online to vote?

I'm not saying they need to wait until the entire first half's over to start voting, but opening the voting exactly a month before the All-Star game would be a lot fairer method of determining the starters, and would still give everyone plenty of time to get their votes in.

With that said, however, I thought the fans did a lot better job this year than they have previously. The only starters that are bad enough to be truly undeserving are Beltran and Rolen. If you had Barry Bonds, Ken Griffey Jr., and Alfonso Soriano starting, then you might have a better argument that the baseball fans just aren't knowledgable.

I made this argument at NMB. What the All-Star voting really needs is a runoff. The way the voting is constructed now, a player can merit an All-Star selection with 15-20% of the vote. When there is no clear-cut favorite, fans vote for several qualified candidates, and that allows weaker candidates to steal a spot here and there. If we took say the top 5, and had fans vote at each position for the last two weeks, I think we would see more informed choices.

Voted for Jeter at mlb.com. I agree they shouldn't open the voting untill like June cuz its dumb to open it so early. It's still a popularity contest so the homefield thing is useless and a disgrace (I think whichever of the two WS teams has the better record should get the HFA)

Actually I'm not too good a guy to vote cuz I don't watch much baseball outside of the few Yanks games that get on tv out here. I guess I'm more of A Yankee fan then an all of MLB fan. I mean I watch baseball tonight and all but I don't get the best idea of who is doing the best, so I try to vote by the stats.

Then again I voted in May so I had no real clue.

There you have the complete argument against fan voting, folks

Im shocked Francona didnt pick Clement when he could have, that's very noble of him.

Clement's probably pitching one of the Oriole games before the ASB and one of the Yankee games after it, so why waste his arm? Still, I don't think the Red Sox have had four starters voted in in quite a while. And have the top overall vote getter to boot.

And providing a green light to steal for whoever reaches first.

Piazza being the starting catcher is the biggest example this year of people saying "Oh, I know this guy" when filling out the ballot.

I've never really had a huge problem with fan voting though, most of the lesser known guys having good years will make the team as a reserve anyway.

the only bad part apart of the fans voting is that Yankee and Red Sox fans will only vote for players on their team. Why do you think that Tino Martinez was leading at first for most of the voting period?

Probably because that one week where people were hugging his nuts for hitting so well, they're forgot to look up and see it all shrivel up.

Jones didn't start hitting until 2/3rds of the way through the ballot and even now, he wouldn't rank among the top three outfielders.

Mike Piazza is a few points off the lead for OPS among NL catchers. His competition includes Paul LoDuca, whose second half collapses are well-documented, and a host of others who have not formed a reputation yet. He's going to the Hall of Fame, and honestly I don't see a problem.

Rolen's in the All-Star game because the non-Rolen vote was divided among David Wright, Morgan Ensberg, Aramis Ramirez and others. Again, blame the process.

As for Yankee and Red Sox fans, if you look closely only Rodriguez is starting for the Yankees, who deserves it, and the four All-Star starters the Sox produced also deserve it. I know several knowledgeable Yankee fans who would vote for the best players regardless of affiliation (as long as they are not Red Sox of course).
