This Week(end) in Baseball

Recommended Posts

Yep, another Red Sox-Yankees series. Wonder what 3/4 of the posts will be about? Don't worry folks, our regularly scheduled TWiB will return next week.

I energetically root for a split, so neither one of ya gains ground while the O's take 3/4 from the Mariners. Good luck to both of ya...really.

Mets have a big four-game series with the Braves coming up. They really need to take three out of four to get some momentum going and gain a little ground on the Wild Card.

Luckily, they're at home, and Martinez should be starting the fourth game. Not sure, though.

Tigers at two games below .500, have a four game series with the Royals. Good chance as any to become an above .500 team. If so, watch out and fear the mediocrity that is the Tigers!

I just think its ironic that people wonder why Red Sox/Yankees is always talked about, and I see ads for Red Sox merch at the top of the page.

The AJ Burnett extravaganza is HEATING UP.

Florida papers all have something different.

Sun Sentinel reports the Jays are offering Gustavo Chacin and others while the trade with the Orioles for Hayden Penn, Jorge Julio and Larry Bigbie might still be on.

Yankees and White Sox are also interested.

I don't think the Jays are seriously thinking of dealing Chacin. He's been a constant for them this season.

I can see Burnett going to the Orioles or White Sox. I don't think the Yanks can offer Florida what they're looking for. They'd have to take Encarnacion, which I doubt they want to do.

If they can get him signed, I'd trade Chacin for Burnett (with more going to Florida, obviously), in a heartbeat. Gabe Gross would probably be part of the package, too, I'd guess.

This is a little of topic but can somebody please tell me the name of the baseball site that gives you exact box scores on specific date for any team in any year. It gives the day by day splits for any player on any day. I can't remember the name of the site so it would be greatly appreciated.

I would have it bookmarked if I didn't have it memorized.

We'll take Burnett on the condition he signs a (reasonable) extension with us. His wife's from the Baltimore area so we might have an in. Daniel Cabrera is totally off the table, but we might be willing to deal Hayden Penn if it bring us Burnett.

I guess the Marlins want Frank Catalonotto, too. I was reading through a thread on a Blue Jays board where people were posting a bunch of rumours that they'd read at numerous places. The Marlins want to toss Encarnacion in there, apparently Mike Lowell, too. I'm not too sure about Lowell, though, since the Jays problem right now is that they're going to have too many infielders once Koskie comes back and adding another 3rd basemen when they already have 3 won't help.

It kinda seems like the Jays have the inside track, though, since the Marlins look really interested in Chacin and Toronto seems like they want him more than anyone else.

Burnett, Lowell, and Encarnacion for Chacin and Catalonotto.

Don't like that one bit. If we're throwing in Lowell, I'd like to see Aaron Hill come back.

Well, I think if Lowell was going, too, the Jays would throw someone else in, but not Hill. Some people on that board were wanting to toss Hinske in there, but that's just wishful thinking.

Like I said, I don't understand the Lowell thing from a Jays stand point. Seems more like the Marlins are trying to dump his salary off.

The Jays trading for one of the top FA pitchers available at the deadline makes no sense because theres no way they'll even be in the race for the Wild Card, let alone the division.

Id love to see the Os pull the trigger on the deal, but hopefully they wont have to part with Cabrerra.

Also, Id like to know why ESPN is calling this weekend "Rivalry Weekend", the only real rivalry game is NY/Boston (and I think they have all 4 games..), although maybe you could say that SF/LA Dodgers is a rivalry game..but none of the other matchups scream "RIVALRY!" to me..

It makes sense because the only way the trade is made is if they can sign Burnett to an extension. And they're not that far out, really. Hurts that Halladay's out for a bit, but they have a soft schedule, for the most part, for the next little bit so they might be able to make up a couple games.

In the team's second trade of the day, the Oakland A's announced the club has acquired pitchers Joe Kennedy and Jay Witasick from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for outfielder Eric Byrnes, minor league infielder Omar Quintinilla and cash considerations.

I'm personally glad Byrnes is gone as his cult-like following among some A's fans just made it impossible to root for the guy. But the trade iteslf, ehhhhh not too sure about. Kennedy was great last year but has been of the worst starters in baseball this year and that's even with Coors effect. A's aren't exactly hurting for starting pitching right now either.

I mean this in all seriousness, Billy Beane will get legit death threats for this trade. Byrnes fans are scary.

Poor Al Leiter. He was one of my favorite players when he was on the Mets, and I'm still a fan of his. It's a shame he can't pitch to save his life anymore.

I saw the Eastern League All Star game (Double A) last night, one of the more fun baseball games I've ever been, major or minors. A good back and forth slugfest.

A funny thing happened, the starters came down from the luxury boxes and several players got lost on their way down to the field and got mobbed by the crowd. I got to high five Red Sox #1 prospect Hanley Ramirez during this whole deal.
