The trading deadline is coming up fast, so it should be interesting what moves the contenders make. I don't see any blockbuster deal happening because there just isn't much available this year.

For some strange reason, there's lots of talk about the Mets getting Soriano. For who it's not clear, though Lastings Milledge, Yusmeiro Petit, and Aaron Heilman are some of the rumored pieces in the deal.

Gammons just said that he got the impression that Nevin would rather go west coast or to Houston (where Nevin lives). He said that the problem is with Houston being unable to give the Pads what they want; Pitching.

He also said that the Mets should get Soriano, but Texas is asking for two major league players and two prospects and the price might be too high. Then again, this team also traded one of its best prospects for Victor Zambrano...

It was just reported here in San Diego that Phil Nevin has rejected the deal.  Padres GM Kevin Towers just confirmed that on the radio.

I wonder if he will catch heat for taking so long when he probably knew he wasnt going to accept the trade.

Maybe the Pads could swing a three-way deal with Houston or something to get Nevin out of town. Towers doesn't like him and I'm sure he's not too warm on him now, since they could actually use Ponson on their team.

A's win 13-4 and have run up seven in a row. They're five back in that division.

A's rock the kasbah.

Kinda of interesting situation they are looking at where if they win the Wild Card they'll draw the White Sox who they've dominated. If the catch the Angels and win the division they'll like draw the Red Sox who have a knack the last couple of years of handing the A's late inning, crushing defeats. Of course not to get a head of myself as there is plenty of time for this to all come crashing down. I mean they can't stay this hot forever.

I am rapidly losing patience with Kevin Millar right about now. It's like he's taken Mark Bellhorn's role in the lineup; he may get a hit now and again but usually either he walks or, especially with men on base, strikes out. Of course, Olerud's in a horrible slump himself but he's got better defense at first. I mean, they keep him in because he might suddenly catch fire in the second half, but I just do not see it happening at all.

As weird as it is to be talking playoffs as an A's fan...lets look ahead. Say the A's make it, and they beat the White Sox in the first round, I am kind of nervous because since the A's overall are such a young team, will their nerves be unsettled going to Fenway ro Yanks Stadium? I mean Zito should be over it by now, as should Chavez, Payton as well, but the rest of the boys, I feel like it is five years ago starting all over again...maybe I am being to pessemistic.

What if Minnesota decides to rally along with the A's, and you get the A's taking the West, and the Twins taking the wild card. That'd be the best route for the A's, because they come out as division champions, and draw the White Sox, whom they've done well against. (As a Moneyball guy and White Sox hater, this outcome is what I hope for.)

I'm happy, the Brewers beat the D-Backs last night. Clark, Overbay, and JJ Hardy all had solo homers.

On a side, note, there are rumors that the White Sox are interested in trading for Lyle Overbay. It would make sense, since the Brewers have Prince Fielder waiting in the wings to play 1B. We'll see what happens.

In 2000 they were down 2-1 facing elimination, and they pounded the Yankees in Yankee Stadium 11-1. In 2001, they played their first two games against the Yankees in New York, and won both. I've heard much nonsense about their inability to play smallball, but I've never heard anyone claim they could not handle the postseason pressure.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. We have a solid 2 months of baseball left to be played. Czech, shut up about the White Sox. I love how Cubs fans are just as obnoxious as they claim White Sox fans to be....

Well, that's the match-up I would prefer, too. If the White Sox are as amazing as their anncouncers remind us every telecast, then they should be able to beat the A's. They're a great team, there's no more denying it. But I would be interested to see how they stack up against the A's in the postseason.

So would I. Honestly I am nervous about the Sox playing the A's. White Sox did okay vs the A's in Chicago but that was in middle of their bad start, so I don't know about October... Luckily I love both teams so regardless of who advances at least one of my top 2 teams does.

Fielder isn't quite ready just yet. The Sox would have to have some enticing offers on the table for the Brewers to dump Overbay two months early. These guys aren't out of it, remember.

What did I do that was so obnoxious? I would prefer for Oakland to beat the White Sox because I don't much like the White Sox, and it would be a magnificent stab to Joe Morgan & Friends who keep reminding us that Moneyball (written by Billy Beane, natch) doesn't work and you have to manufacture runs and all that rubbish. I'm thinking big picture.

Al,

What is your prediction on how many wins the Phillies will end up with this year?

I don't usually predict win totals, especially now when the complexion of the team could change drastically within a week. They're about a 5:1 shot right now.

That's fine. But Chicago IS Chicago. It's like rooting for the Bulls and hating on the Blackhawks. It's just silly. To each man his own I guess, and I'm sorry I called you obnoxious.

No it's not just like that. The White Sox are the bastard stepchild of Chicago sports. I can't in good conscience turn around and root for the White Sox to win it all. That's almost as lame as "doin' it for the conference."

And the bastard stepchild looks to be the one outperforming Chicago's Favorite Son...

Porter, I'm pretty sure you don't even live in Chicago, so clearly you don't know what the hell you're talking about.

EDIT: This was in response to you saying "Chicago IS Chicago."
