Big Ol' Smitty 0 Report post Posted August 5, 2005 Men whose masculinity is challenged become more inclined to support war or buy an SUV, a new study finds. Their attitudes against gays change, too. Cornell University researcher Robb Willer used a survey to sample undergraduates. Participants were randomly assigned feedback that indicated their responses were either masculine of feminine. The women had no discernable reaction to either type of feedback in a follow-up survey. But the guys's reactions were "strongly affected," Willer said today. "I found that if you made men more insecure about their masculinity, they displayed more homophobic attitudes, tended to support the Iraq war more and would be more willing to purchase an SUV over another type of vehicle," said Willer said. "There were no increases [in desire] for other types of cars." Those who had their masculinity threatened also said they felt more ashamed, guilty, upset and hostile than those whose masculinity was confirmed, he said. http://news.yahoo.com/s/space/20050802/sc_...referwarandsuvs

NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted August 5, 2005 I read some study last season that because so many more Men are behind desks and in front of computers instead of blue collar jobs, that supporting the war and buying SUVs kind of justify to themselves that they are "Men" Kind of a similar notion in a way. I think it was called "The Revolution of the Masculine Cubicle Workers" or something like that........

Guest Angora Jellyfish Report post Posted August 5, 2005 This reminds me of the "study" wherein men and women were shown "emotionally charged pictures" - and it was "proven" that women were more emotional than men because they happened to remember the emotionally charged ones more vividly. If I'm not mistaken, I think the focus group was about 200 people. Also reminds me of the "study" wherein I met a gay guy once and he tried to come onto me, so all gays are overly base, sensual, and evil. And the time I met an irishman who was drinking, so they're definitely proven to have alcohol problems. Fuck this nonsense.

CheesalaIsGood 0 Report post Posted August 5, 2005 The replys so far have pretty funny. You don't tell a MAN what is and is NOT a masculine trait muthafucka! Don't know where DA got that this was a fishing trip in the article, but whatever. This has been the sort of thing we libs have been saying about conservative men for a long time now. So true. So very fucking true.
Vyce 0 Report post Posted August 5, 2005 What a ridiculous study. This one is about as trustworthy as that study that Berkeley did which 'proved' that conservatives share most of the traits of NAZIS or some such bullshit. I fully support the Iraq War, yet hate SUVs, and am for gay rights. Does that mean my masculinity isn't questioned?

I do not support the War in Iraq and if I could, I'd drive a hyprid Toyota, except they are too friggin expensive for a lower-middle class guy like myself. I kick it with NoCalMike and he can vouch that while I'm not as liberal as he, I am far from a conservative. I just think the study is full of crap. Nuff said. The whole "OMG!! MEN HAVE SMALL PENISNISNNSSESS!!!!ANDWANTTO KILLLLLYVERYONEEENEEE!! DRIVIEBIGGGIEECARRSSZZ GASSSGUZZLLELRRSSZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!!", that was a poor attempt at sarcasm and humor. So why don't you keep my name out of your mouth, eh?

AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted August 6, 2005 I've long believed that vehicle size is inversely proportional to penis size. Did I mention I drive a small Toyota? People who are larger than average in body size can muck that up. I drive a Contour since I can't fit into some piddly little car like a Hyundai or a Focus. Although I had an Escort before (got totalled). What's the average anyway?
SuperJerk 0 Report post Posted August 6, 2005 ^Average would be a Toyota Camry.^ For those of knee-jerk conservatives who claim this study is fake just because you don't want your own manhood challenged, I can prove this study is valid. Andrew Sullivan is a strong supporter of the Iraq War, and is gay. George Clooney opposed the war, and gets more pussy than an animal shelter. That's all the proof you need right there. CanadianGuitarist 0 Report post Posted August 6, 2005 I drive a Eagle Summit, a car that looks big but is actually pretty average size. My cock once ate a pig. But, in seriousness, I've often lamented that the idea of an SUV seems like it was made for guys with small dicks. The measure of a man should be how he treats others, how he treats a lady, IMO. Art Sandusky 0 Report post Posted August 7, 2005 What a dumb collection of responses. Overreactions everywhere. Anyone who didn't notice this survey's results (especially 'round my area) in daily interactions with people is blind and deaf.

Art Sandusky 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2005 Which is a damn fine program. I actually look at the stuff lampooned on it in a more positive light afterward, side effect of laughter I guess. The so-called "South Park conservatism" is pretty good too. "This is Karl Rove." (thunder or wolves howling, can't remember the running gag sound effect; either way it was pretty funny)

SuperJerk 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2005 What a dumb collection of responses. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> For the record, my responses were actually a joke. I figured people would be able to determine I was kidding at least from my Andrew Sullivan/George Clooney post. That had "I'm full of crap" written all over it. Sheesh. Jobber of the Week 0 Report post Posted August 9, 2005 Masculinity, who needs it? While there's a couple guys with muscular bodies I admire (none of them associated with wrestling, most of them related to soft-core porn) I prefer guys with thin bodies and looks that could easily cause gender confusion if they tried.
