Emo kids -- I need an FAQ

Recommended Posts

I lied when I told him his poetry was good. God, why do all my emo guy friends think I give a damn about their shitty poetry? Just because I'm a woman doesn't mean I have a built-in art appreciation unit. Jeez. Keep that ratty notebook under your mattress where it belongs next time.

Is Jimmy Eat World an emo band? They leaned more that way with Futures, but Bleed American/second self titled album(they changed it after September 11th, the one with the cigarette dispenser on the cover) is one of my favorite jam out albums, and it doesn't feel emo at all. I also don't think I can stand most emo, as I hate the bit of Dashboard Confessional and Hawthorne Heights I've heard.

And I'm still happy that Jack Daniels and Jager have yet to be assimilated by the Emo Corps.

Emo bitches shouldn't drink either, you need to be pretty tough to swallow that stuff (See my friend and his collection of Jager bottles and his tendancy to "See the Deer"). I personally can't stand Jager but I love my Jack (I still want a bottle of the Single Barrel)

I will agree that Jack has a shot of becoming trendy considering all the swag thats out in stores, also the one thing I fear of being corrupted soon is Guinness for the same reasons as Jack.

I can give a good flying fuck if emo kids start drinking Guiness, I am not giving up my Irish Car Bombs....ever.

drinking a certain brand of beer just because the social group you're in does rather than drinking what tastes good, is cheaper, what you prefer, etc. has gotta be the lamest thing I've ever heard...

"well all the other emo kids drink Guiness, I really hate it, but I'm emo so I better drink it too!"

Lushus, I switched away from High Life when it became uber-trendy among the scenesters ... not directly because it was trendy but because of the people that ended up chatting with me because we were drinking the same beer. Some guy with extenders in his ears coming over and saying, "Champagne of beers!" just because we're both living the High Life at the time is enough to make you switch to something else.

Darthtiki, I'm with you ... nowhere around here sells Single Barrel. I'm forced to slum it at the local TGIF's whenever I want to drink the Single Barrel.

Plugs are great. I can't wait until I'm 60 and I see people my age feeling ridiculous about the huge holes in their ears.

I wear girls trousers because I have a ridiculous 26" waist. It's not my fault my metabolism is crazy and that clothing designers don't think people like me exist. Other than that, and possibly my very dark but naturally so hair, I think I'm mostly unemo.

That half in the face, semi-flock of seagulls hair cut is funny. My hair used to do that when I didn't brush or wash it for a few days, now people are having it cut to look like that.

I should do two checkered, off-center mohawks, see if that catches on.

I like plugs and I'm planning on getting them. My answer to the old age thing is the same as when people bring it up concerning tattoos. I'll be 60. I'll already be all old and wrinkly. Why would a couple of big holes in my ears bother me? Or with ink, why would a little bit of brightly cololred splotches on my skin bother me?

There's one catch, tek. Guys a couple of months from now guys will yell to you that they want to fuck your ear lobes.

Emo/hardcore...yeah. Everyone who was in with the emo crowd in high school were abercrombie & fitch whores two years beforehand. Everyone in "the scene" now are just fools.

Jack is my favorite hard liquor right now, and while the style of the dirnk (strong...black label etc.) could catch on, the fact that emo kids, in general, are all talk and no walk pussies means that our manly drink will not be disgraced by this fad. They can't take the strong taste.

I'd count Jimmy Eat World as borderline emo along the lines with Weezer. Occassionally, they delve into emo territory but overall they aren't an emo band. Jimmy Eat World always seems to have emo bands opening up for them (Taking Back Sunday, when they come here in September, Straylight Run is opening).

Would you also get tats on your face and hands? Most people that I know - even the ones that have full sleeves - left their exposed areas pretty much uncovered, so as to be able to hide the ink for the most part.

Unless you keep long hair, you really can't hide your ears.

I never understood the whole "get a million piercings" thing, be it for men or women. Ink I can understand, but most people get ink for the wrong reasons. Fratboys getting Asian characters that say "honor" and "strength" when they themselves are not of Asian heritage, are not honorable, and are only strong in large numbers; fans of a band getting their logo tattoo'd because they believe they'll still be a fan of that band years later when the music has no real staying power (though I may possibly be guilty of this when I get my Fiend); friends all getting some crazy or cute design on their hips/lower backs that don't mean anything.

If you're gonna get ink, make it fucking mean something. Some people get full sleeves that tell a story, others to help remember parts of their lives, and others to show to the world what their beliefs and values are. So if you go in and get a tribal symbol because "dude, it looks cool," then fuck you, because in a few years you're going to go "man, I wish I never got this." Mucho respect to those that served in the military and got the logo of their particular branch (marines, navy, army, air force, etc.) done with their troop number, and to those who have the names of fallen friends and family on their body (as I plan on getting as well).

Yeah. If you're getting a tattoo, make it mean something. Another reason why I hate emofucks: "Hey guys, look at my cool turtle tattoo! And look at this girl's Playboy Bunny!"

My current and all my future tattoos celebrate my nerdiness. Comics, computers, maybe some wrestling and even philosophy related ones. Where does that put me?

You're getting them for things you love, which is good. It's when people get them for passing fads or just because "they look cool" that I don't fucking care about. Like the difference between my friends Jason and Sarah, for example.

Sarah has two tattoos: a heart with crossbones behind it, and one of those two-colored stars. The heart is a takeoff on the Murder City Devils logo, I do believe (either that or Less Than Jake, her two favorite bands), and MCD was her ex-boyfriend's (they never broke up: he died) favorite band, so she got a takeoff on the symbol. The star, however, is to cover up a scar from an attempted suicide, and since the symbol has become somewhat adopted into the punk scene, and she has been part of the Southeastern MA punk scene for years, it makes sense.

Jason has but one tattoo: a spade with a 13 in the middle to celebrate his love for Johnny Cash. While I do think that the tattoo is quite cool, and I don't doubt that he has other reasons for it besides his admiration of the Man in Black, I don't think he put TOO much thought into it.

I have the Decepticon symbol on the side of my right arm....I'm right there with ya in nerdiness, Tek...

EDIT: read Laz's post about people just getting tattoos to look cool...I agree with him...I definently put some thought into both of mine....one is my daughter's name, scrolling down the side of my left arm in the style of the Yankees "NY" logo...so obviously that has real meaning...my decepticon tatt is because they were one of my fondest childhood memories...had all the toys, comics, video, basically it's a piece of my childhood that I really enjoyed...I won't regret it when I'm 75, I don't intentionally do things I know I will regret...

Laz, I wouldn't worry about the Fiend tat ... it's not like the Misfits are a flavor of the month, so their legacy (of brutality ... sorry, bad pun) will still be strong. And it's not like you jumped on a bandwagon with them, you've been a fan for years.

I don't have any ink, which is surprising because I've wanted one since I was like 14 and have been in the studio to get one done repeatedly. It's just something's always come up that prevented me from getting one, and I figure I'm too old now to get my first one.

I never understood the whole "get a million piercings" thing, be it for men or women.
That I disagree with ... I have a huge piercing fetish, and it takes a huge amount to be 'too much' for me. I mean, my on-going intarweb crush is Marie of the Suicide Girls, and she's got half a dozen or so facial pierces, and even that's not too much.

you're never too old niskie, stop making excuses! :P

though I will admit, I find it lame when 45 year old moms go in to get their first ones done alongside their 20-something daughters...

I've seen you mention that before. That's easily one of the coolest tattoos I've heard of. Really.

Provided I get one, there is only one tat design I'll get. It's of the Social D Skelleton inside an Orange. Reason being other than I love Social D's music and they are from Orange County is the fact of that if and when I get it, it'll be because I will have achieved my dream of living down in Orange County Permanently. Originally I was going to have the orange sitting in the doorway of Sleeping Beauty Castle from Disneyland, but scaled it down for concealment purposes
