Green Day clean up at the Kerrang awards

Recommended Posts

US band Green Day have been named best band on the planet at the 12th annual Kerrang! rock awards.

They were the biggest winners at the rock magazine's ceremony, also scooping the prize for best live act.

Welsh metal group Funeral For a Friend won best British band, while New Jersey's My Chemical Romance picked up best album and best video.

Iron Maiden were inducted into the Kerrang! Hall of Fame and shock rocker Marilyn Manson took the Icon Award.

"I didn't wake up feeling like an icon because I didn't go to sleep," said Manson - real name Brian Warner.

"I don't like journalists because I was one, but I like the fans."

The flamboyant singer recently announced he was giving up music to concentrate on acting and directing.

He said the final dates of his current tour would be "the last time people see this type of Marilyn Manson experience".

Manson was honoured for "a notoriety that has spread all over the globe".

"The thing about Manson I've always liked is that he's challenged the mores of America," said Placebo's Brian Molko, who said the award was "completely well deserved".

His sentiments were echoed by Feeder, who said Manson was an "amazing lyricist and songwriter".

"He's taken the flak for a lot of things he didn't really need to and he's dealt with it in an amazing way."

The London ceremony was billed as "the biggest and baddest awards in the rock calendar".

Green Day became one of the world's biggest heavy rock bands more than a decade ago and have been enjoying a renaissance since their American Idiot album came out last year.

They saw off competition from My Chemical Romance, System of a Down, HIM and Foo Fighters to be named best band on the planet.

My Chemical Romance won best album for Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge while the band's second award came for their Helena video.

The US group said they wanted to "thank the fans from the bottom of our black little hearts".

Lifetime achievement

The prize for best single went to Foo Fighters' hit Best of You while Trivium were named best international newcomers.

But System of a Down, who had five nominations, went home empty-handed.

Funeral For a Friend saw off Feeder, Stereophonics, Placebo and Cradle of Filth to win the best British band title.

Bullet For My Valentine, another Welsh band, picked up the prize for best British newcomers.

Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor was named classic songwriter while Killing Joke were given a lifetime achievement accolade.

British rockers The Darkness triumphed at last year's awards, winning two trophies for the second year running.

This year's ceremony was hosted by Hollywood actress Juliette Lewis, who fronts the band Juliette and the Licks

Green Day has been my favorite band for the last 11 years or so, and American Idiot is their best work yet (and up there with Morrison Hotel as best album I've ever heard) so the award is deserved.

Yeah... flame on.

I liked Green Day as a kid. The fact that kids who are the same age I was then are digging them now should say something for the state of popular music. Oh, and fuck anybody who uses the phrase "staying power." People are hating on Backstreet Boys left, right and center for coming back with the same old shit. At least they were honest about it. Green Day pulled together a half-assed "rock opera" and rebuilt their careers on it. It'll be another ten years before they finally decide to fuck off for good.

American Idiot is unlike anything Green Day has ever done (although a few songs sound like old Green Day), and while I am fairly indifferent to politics, most of the songs on the album are great.

Warning was better. Warning is still playable all the way through, while American Idiot is already tiresome, however Green Day will be pushing singles off that album for another year or two.

Warning was really good, but I prefer American Idiot. I always listen to AI all the way through, with the exception of the song "American Idiot." "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "Holiday" have been overplayed, but I still love 'em.

Did anyone notice that Jason, the second touring guitarist, is in the video for "Wake Me Up When September Ends"?

Even weirder:

I was the age you are now when all these kids who you were once the same age as are digging them.

Yup.

Shit, "Dookie" is their best album. It was funny and honest and had catchy, inoffensive (well, musically anyway) tunes throughout the CD. There are really no bad cuts on the whole thing, and it doesn't matter anyway because they blitz through the whole CD in like 35 minutes.

Every kid in high school can relate to bitchy girlfriends, being bored and horny, wanting to blow shit up, get in fights, and get burned out and wander the streets.

I love that Cradle of Filth haven't recorded anything good ever and are considered one of Britain's top 5 bands.

Edited for you-know-what
