I kick myself for not seeing it in theaters, but I rented it on DVD (the first day) and I thought it was great. Everybody I talked to said it was hilarous but I didn't think it was as funny as they said. But, I still laughed and I just bought it on DVD, today.

 

I was watching it at first with subtitles and I hate that so I decided to go back to the menu and click "Languages." I found and English version and I knew it would be badly dubbed and I was right. But, anything over reading the whole movie.

 

The movie, itself was great. I don't really know what else to say except the visuals were awesome and I was interested throughout the movie. The humor that was in there was good and the fight scenes were cool.

 

What are your opinions on this movie? Great? Okay? Sucks? Haven't seen it? Ect....

It was one of the movies that I had to see, and I wasn't disappointed. It's an entertaining movie to me because there's little downtime in between the an action and/or comedy scenes.

 

I watched it in subtitles since I thought the English dub was horrible.

To stay on topic, yes it was a fantastic film. You need to see all of the other Stephen Chow flicks.

Well, mainly because when you're reading the subtitles you're missing parts of the movie on screen. For a visual-medium, that's pretty damn important.

 

Thus far I've seen 2 Chow movies - Soccer and Cookery - and I've enjoyed them both, I look forward to watching KFH. There is such an odd sense of humour about it that I dig.

I had to see it in the theaters even after wathing it at home. It spawned the Chow Marathon which i start with his each new movie release. Can't go wrong with his films if you like that style of comedy, but he did have some sleepers in the hands of Wong Jing.

 

Btw, they're already getting ready for a sequal.

I was just guessing as to what you meant. Actually, you can't really comment on me saying that since all you said was, "My God." That could be a number of things and I was thinking you thought I was stupid for not liking subtitles.

 

I just don't understand why some people just don't want to or can't read subtitles during a foreign movie, that's all.

Actually, I've seen Passion Of The Christ so I can read a whole movie. I don't want to because it's just annoying to keep reading it and (like RavishingRickRudo said) you are missing some stuff on-screen.

 

To stay on topic, yes it was a fantastic film. You need to see all of the other Stephen Chow flicks.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but is Shaolin Soccer a Stephen Chow flick? If so, I just saw the full movie (saw bits of it a long time ago) yesterday. I thought it was pretty entertaing, but I like Kung Fu Hustle WAY better.

Yes, Shaolin Soccer was done by Stephen Chow. My first exposure to his work, and it's what hooked me. All in all I likes KFH a bit more though.

Unless you have problems with reading comprehension, the "Reading subtitles makes you miss parts of the movie" excuse is bullshit.

 

It's bullshit like the "My tv is small" excuse for buying fullscreen.

 

It may take you a few movies to fully coordinate your eyes and brain to the task, but paying attention to moving images while reading subtitles is something the human brain is capable of doing.

It's true. In fact, I've gotten so used to subtitles in movies (as my mom actually has me put them on because she's unable to understand anything other than perfectly spoken English spoken rapidly... for example, any film with a predominantly British or Southern accents she will be absolutely lost on, unless she says what is said at the bottom.) that I've gotten a bit in the habit of putting them on while watching a lot of flicks at home, especially since I have to keep the volume down in a small apartment. It also allows me to not miss a single thing being said..

 

Also, when it comes to foreign films, the last film I watched dubbed was Brotherhood of the Wolf, and the only reason why was because I didn't have a DVD player yet, and that was the only version my Blockbuster store had on VHS. Oh god, I should hope never to have to deal with that shit ever again.

Not to mention the fact that a shitty English dub can just about ruin some foreign films. For many, watching it with subtitles in the original language and then watching it with an English dub, it's like two totally different films.

 

The last one that did this to me was for High Tension/Switchblade Romance/Haute Tension. I hated the English dub they included for the US theatrical release.

I usually have to do this when watching British comedy [especially with Welsh actors].

I have to do it with certain shows with a heavy/thick English accent also. There was one, I forget what it's called, but I couldn't hardly understand a single word that quite a few of the characters were saying. I think the show had a guy in a wheelchair in it as a main character.

Little Britain. Exactly the show I was thinking of. Especially when that same actor dresses up as a teenage girl, and her gimmick is talking... REALLY FAST.. in British slang..

The dialogue can be hard to understand at times, especially during Vicky Pollard sketches, so utilizing the subtitles is highly recommended. Even so, the subtitles can hardly keep up, and often miss bits and pieces of the dialogue.

The subs do end up leaving some out, but the show is so damn funny.

KFH is a great flick. Saw it in the theaters and bought it immediately. I did think it was funny, though - when we bought our tickets, the guy that owns the theater was quick to warn us that it had subtitles and we'd be doing "a lot of reading". When the three of us gave him an odd look, he replied with a curt "We've had a lot of complaints about the subtitles."

 

I watched Shaolin Soccer (which I also liked), but unfortunately, the disc was scratched and I didn't get to see the ending. I'm waiting for Netflix to send one back so I can finish it up.

 

I never watch dubbed movies over the subtitled versions. They just lose something. Hero, KFH, Shaolin Soccer, Ichi the Killer... nope. I refuse to watch them in English. It just sounds wrong. I'd much rather take the time to read a few sentences than listen to a god-awful dub.

I don't know if I could understand what's going on in Ichi, without subtitles. The English dub seemed hard to hear and hard to follow.

The English dub in Ichi was awful. I watched it once (not my idea) and was completely confused. I had to rewatch the movie to understand what was going on. I think that experience was the one that taught me to leave languages well enough alone.

 

I know how to read and actually like to do so, it's not the end of the world if I have to do it to enjoy a movie.

I had to do that for a Scottish film called Sweet Sixteen. The kid's accent was so thick I couldn't understand him otherwise. I think I had to do it for some of The Young Ones episodes as well.

 

I think films should be watched in their native languages. You lose a lot with the translations, inflections, etc. Plus, some films (especially Asian and French films) are just better that way. I watched Spirited Away with the subtitles, and then I tried to watch it with the English dubbing. I stopped after ten minutes. It just doesn't seem right to me.

I think Snatch comes to mind as well for movies that need subtitles, despite the fact they're in "English".

 

Didn't even mention how much I absolutely loved KFH, by the way. So yeah, I loved it.. It ranks pretty high up there with my top comedies, really. Great flick.

I don't really mind reading subtitles that much, but I prefer not to. I respect the fact that you like subtitles and whatnot. But, it's just my preference and it's dumb for someone to criticize that. Not saying you were...just throwing it out there.....

I watched it this weekend for the first time with Sin City (first time as well). Needless to say, I had an awesome movie watching weekend.
