Si82 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2005 Batista #1? John Cena #2? I thought technical ability was high on the criteria list for this. This chart is insane. It really is.
Dobbs 3K 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2005 They factor in accomplishments within the year, so Batista and Cena make sense as 1 and 2. Remember the year Dean Malenko won? Man, that was weird.
pochorenella 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2005 I remember that issue. It really boggled my mind since I thought Austin was the clear #1. They argued that since there was no clear-cut decision for the top spot they would simply give it to the best technical wrestler in the world, hence they gave it to Malenko. From #2 on they used their normal criteria, which is accomplishments for the time period and overall ability. For this year I don't mind the top spots, but I'm certainly disappointed with the placing they gave Shawn MIchaels. I guess the time when he was injured was a big detriment since it is within the time-period for qualification, but there's no doubt in my mind that if you were to factor his performances for 2005 alone then he's the Wrestler of the Year by far. cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2005 Malenko being #1 was awesome. Hey, could Austin go out there and ground a cruiserweight with leg work for 20 mins. and make you LIKE it? I think not. Not shocking that Batista and Cena are 1 and 2 though. Hell in 1995 Nash was #1 due to his long title run. The PWI 500 is more sane than their year end awards. Hell, in 1996 The Giant won wrestler of the year even though I can't for the life of me recall much he did beyond a mediocre title run. Even though I didn't care for Shawn Michaels he was easily wrestler of the year in 1996. Ditto Lex Luger in 1997, where did THAT shit come from? His lame 1 week title reign justified him being WOTY over Steve Austin, Bret Hart, etc.
The Mandarin 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2005 Dean Malenko winning the PWI 500 was great. Dean Malenko became "huge" (well, not physically) in my eyes after that. I remember being initially ticked off Austin didn't win, though.
Dangerous A 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2005 It's PWI. Isn't their stuff still aimed at marks? I put more stock in DVDVR's 500, where at least they had some fairly consistent criteria, although they don't do the 500 list anymore.
Red Baron 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2005 I think I saw Zach Gowen in that list somewhere. Like in the mid 300's.

World's Worst Man 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2005 If one wanted to factor in both in-ring ability and accomplishments, I would imagine that Kojima would be #1. You know, that whole 4-crown thing. But then one has to remember that it's PWI and chuckle a bit. It's essentially for WWE fanboys, and they throw in guys like Kojima or Tenzan to make it appear like they know what they're talking about.

cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted September 1, 2005 Well the thing is by definition they can't have a Japanese guy #1 for various reasons, mainly that most of the reading audience has seen the guy. Thus they used to put Misawa or Muto at #2 or so.

I didn't include Vance Nevada either, since he was wrestling out East all this year. I think Firestorm's in Calgary.
CanadianGuitarist 0 Report post Posted September 1, 2005 Dropkick Murphy, while I love the band, is essentially a gimmick(I would think, I've never seen him). But a credible wrestler? That kinda seems like Theo Huckstable or Eddie Winslow being held in the same regard around here as KKK.
CanadianChick 0 Report post Posted September 1, 2005 He's a good wrestler, actually. The name is gimmicky, but he's not really.

Dobbs 3K 0 Report post Posted September 1, 2005 One other thing to add about Malenko winning...I don't believe Austin had yet been WWF Champion at that point...he had the IC title run, but that wasn't that huge or anything. Malenko had about four title runs that year, IIRC...US, Cruiserweight, I think he held the TV title...Bret Hart and Hulk Hogan had both been sporadic in their defenses, so I believe that was one of the other main reasons Malenko won that year...he had the most accomplishments and most defenses in a US ring.
