This Week in Baseball

But Leyland had the nerve to say that he didn't think the team was good enough, and then offer suggestions as to how to make it better. Whoops, can't go against fast Eddy and the faceless ownership group.

If I saw Ed Wade crossing the street, I'm not sure that my foot would hit the breaks in time.

You know, I was wrong about Willis. He got it together after a shaky second half start.

I was right about the Phillies, though...tho' predicting a Phillies collapse is like guessing the sun will rise each day.

Sigh.

It was like watching Major League, last night.

David Bell = Roger Dorn

And then Wagner once again decided to throw the "Masturbator".

When interviewed last off season, Leyland was going on about smallball bullshit and how the Phillies strike out too much and don't advance runners, yadda yadda yadda.

Leyland is another smallball mark, no way he would have been a good mix with the Phils, who are a high OBP and power team

Interesting. Take away Dontrelle's three starts after the All-Star Game...

Minus "those" 3 games: 20-5, 1.58 ERA

Shows how much one really bad week can hurt you.

If we take the division or the wild card and some how manage to win it all, I demand we play the D-Rays in an exhibition series after the season, just so we can take away that empty feeling...

I wish the drays would stop playing up for the yankees and lay down like they do for the red sox. Hey I cant figure it out either so Imight as well throw out some strange explanation. But TB has had a great record since the break so its no big surprise I suppose, but how come every other team can manage to hit TB except for the yanks? I mean its getting plain bizzare. Perhaps its a mental thing? thankfully NYY only have 3 more games against TB and the other series not involving boston are vs toronto and baltimore, whom the yankees have done much better against.

Oh well maybe they can sweep the red sox and give me a better weekend lol

wins mean more now, no matter who they are against

Exactly. Layland was once a good manager, but I was unconvinced that he was the correct fit for the Phillies.

What exactly did Ed Wade do wrong here? We had two outs and a one run lead in the ninth, with a "proven closer" on the mound. We got the clutch hitsd we needed, and everything went right up until that point, save for David Bell's futile run towards the plate. If anything, this should display the folly of spending $8-9 Million to resign Billy Wagner when the club has more pressing needs.

Obviously Ed Wade did not lose any games for the Phillies this week, but at the same time he hasn't done anything to help them win during his tenure. I'm frustrated. I'm pissed off that they let his contract roll over again, which means that Elmer B. Fuddled will probably be back again next year too.

Not only has Ed Wade built a team that is not designed to win, he has managed to build up a farm system that is the drizzling shits. And he did all of this while spending money this time.

Oh and Al, if you see someone running on the field and taking out the third base coach tonight, you can smile and say "C Dubya's done gone and lost his mind".

Yanks have to take two out of three, or their WC chances are in trouble, especially with us playing the Sox to end the season, and the Indians playing a White Sox team who will be playing a AAA team.

Edit: I'd also like to say that if the Yankees throw a pitch anywhere near the strikezone to Ortiz this weekend, I might kill myself.

Edit2: Hey Cubs fan, did Lawton ground out to 2nd a lot for you guys? Thats ALL he does for us. I take Bernie for granted, yes Bernie of all people, in the outfield after watching Lawton. Just a terrible outfielder.

I might be biased, but it pisses me off how hitters on other teams refuse to try and get out of the way when a pitch hits them. I see Jeter and Bernie freaking dancing and diving to get out of the way, while Johnny Gomes and Manny just freaking stand there.

edit: WHAT THE FUCK CANO?!?

edit2: Alright, redemption.

Well....this series looks pretty shitty right about now. The Sox have sucked against pitchers they've faced for the first time all year (see Leiter, Al) and Schilling will probably get lit up like the Olympic flame, and then there's RJ on Sunday.

They've had plenty of chances to put the Yankees away all year and now that, along with the defense, it's finally catching up to them.

But, you see what the great thing about having a 4 game lead in september is? Losing two out of three doesn't mean anything. Its sweep or bust for us.

And if the Yankees can't hit Mark Hendrickson, who knows if they can hit Schilling. And who knows what RJ shows up?

Yeah, they got him for 5 runs in 3 innings. I don't think there's any way he wins the Cy Young at this point, especially after seeing the writers pass over Randy Johnson for Clemens last year in pretty much the same situation.

I think Chris Carpenter is pretty much a lock at this point. Clemens is good, but it's hard to overlook the fact that they usually take him out of the game after 5 innings (keeping his ERA artificially low), aside from the fact that his ERA in the last month is close to 8.00.

As far as the Cubs, I think their fans are a little hard on Dusty, but you have to wonder if a personel change is in order after this season.

Schilling goes today. I'll set the over/under of innings pitched at 5 and take the under. Based on his starts and "relief" appearances, his ankle is clearly still bothering him, but he's trying to tough it out. I'd love to see him go 7 strong, shutout innings but I can't realistically see that happening just yet.

Not quite the same. Carpenter has him in more stats this year then Clemens had Randy Johnson in.
