the max 0 Report post Posted September 14, 2005 Although Ortiz over A-Rod is not as absurd as Andruw Jones winning the award. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Don't say that to Harold Reynolds. His reasoning was that Andruw was the veteran presence for a young team and he set a Braves single season homerun record. AND he plays great defensive centerfield. bob_barron 0 Report post Posted September 14, 2005 And without Andruw carrying the team, we'd be horrible.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted September 14, 2005 Quite honestly, all of that is true. I shouldn't mean to badmouth Ortiz or Jones because quite honestly, there's little bad to say about them. The problem is that there's one MVP per league, and they are not it.
therealworldschampion 0 Report post Posted September 14, 2005 Phillies win 5-4. If Ed Wade trades Ryan Howard this offseason, I may have to take a baseball bat, drive over to CBP and take his knees out. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I assume you have a better plan then? Just how do we deal with Thome's contract AND keep Howard? I like Howard as much as anyone, but it may be in the best interests of the organization to trade him, especially now that his perceived value is so high. A SF columnist wrote the Giants should go head over heals to acquire him. Trading Howard could provide long-term solutions at third base or catcher. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It's the boneheaded thing that this organization would do. If they have to trade Howard, the last person that should be dealing him is Wade, considering how well his other deals have went. I have a feeling that if they trade Howard, Thome is going to take heaps of abuse from the media and fanbase, especially if he comes back next year and struggles. Maybe Andruw has presence but Steve Finley now he has VETERAN PRESENCE~! And you know who the MVP really is? You guessed it. Frank Stallone.

Bored 0 Report post Posted September 14, 2005 Just a hunch I think the Mets would trade for Thome in the offseason if the Phillies do shop him. It'd be a very Met-like type of move.
therealworldschampion 0 Report post Posted September 14, 2005 A blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while. Inning-Endy Chavez, Mike Williams, Turk Wendell, Todd Jones, Dennis Cook, Kevin Milwood( though it did look good at the time of the trade), trading nearly all of the catcher prospects... He did do a decent job of scouting for the Abreu trade, but Lee Thomas was the GM when the trade actually happened.

The Byrd trade was bad, but Marlon was expendable. Lieberthal's outperformed Estrada this season. There are some questionable trades on Wade's resume, but no outright Kansas City style robberies. We got 2 very good years out of Placido Polanco, and of course the Billy Wagner trade.

CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted September 15, 2005 The Giants had a chance to sweep the Padres and close to within 4 games, but the bullpen couldn't hold a 2-run lead in the 9th. SD won 5-4 in extras. Angels just lost AGAIN.

Guest Smues Report post Posted September 15, 2005 Braves lose AGAIN to Philly. I'm fearing a sweep. Thankfully Florida is getting murdered so they'll still hopefully have a 5 game lead after today, but it's disappearing fast. At least Andruw hit his 50th of the season and 300th of his career. I'd rather much see him at 3rd base right now, if Wade could've moved David Bell's contract. Nice job by the Phils tonight, a win tomorrow could be huge for their confidence... KingPK 0 Report post Posted September 15, 2005 To steer the convo back to AL MVP for a moment (since I missed it a page ago), I believe it will come down to three things: A) Who has the better September. B) Which team makes the playoffs (If the Yankees do, it'll most likely be A-Rod. If not, it's Ortiz) C) How many of the voters have a bias against DH's winning the MVP, which I'm sure there are a few. I don't think Ortiz will have to worry about splitting votes with Damon and Ramirez as much, because they are rapidly falling out of the race.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted September 15, 2005 This time last week the Phillies were swept by the Astros, and fell 2.5 games out of the wild card race. They tied for the wild card lead again, and face the Marlins in Florida this weekend. Except this time we face the Marlins' good pitchers. Once again though, we dare hope the Phillies can pull this off.
