G4 Tech TV

Recommended Posts

Recently got hooked on "X-Play", the G4 Review show; I've never ever seen/watched G4/Tech TV before as it was never part of my local TV package until I upgraded to digital cable. Can someone recommend me any other shows on G4?

Leo Laporte is back (Call for Help) at 11 am (I set up a season pass on my Tivo), only problem is its more or less Call For Help : Canada Version as they do it in Canada. They don't take any US Calls (not even a phone number or anything) and aside from a couple of interesting things, its overall really boring. But at least they brought Leo back. Any Leo is better than no Leo.

Oh, and Comcast succeded in ruining all of the carry over shows from Tech TV, as now I can't even watch X Play anymore. Screensavers is now a pile of garbage (OMG ITS THE ATTACK OF THE SHOW!111!).

Good job Comcast..good job.

I used to get TechTV. Then G4 took it over. Shortly afterward it was dropped from my cable company. Good riddance.

X-Play was watchable, despite being cheesy as hell and sometimes coming off as extremely forced.

Judgment Day sucks. Tommy T is almost too much of a moron to qualify as a Gamepro editor.

Why they couldn't keep the nets seperate was beyond me, each was good on it's own. G4, albeit repeatitive had filter, icons, pulse, players, portal, and f'n reruns of starcade. TechTv was the shit, X-Play, TSS, C4H, Wired for Sex, and Unscrewed which was the greatest show. Plus TechTv had the better roster of talent with Leo, Patrick, Martin, Laura, Kevin, Yoshi, Cat, Adam and a pre-Maxim-fied Morgan Webb.

X-Play and Judgement Day are really the only things left. Cinematech is cool to see the new game trailers although the late night version about Japan games is a little bit...well as you would expect, weird.

Although X-Play is slowly becoming predictable. Nothing like complaining about the games you JUST gave 5 out of 5. If you have that many gripes, why give it a 5 out of 5?

Cheat used to be good for codes, but the new woman is all "I think I'm hot and so should you...now try these codes". Which gets a touch annoying. Actually, a helluva lot more than a touch.

The people who owned TechTV, Vulcan Ventures (run by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen) had enough of the channel. They were going to scrap everything, fire everyone, and sell the channel's spot on cable and satellite networks to whoever wanted it. There's a lot of people who want to make their own channel, and it seemed ripe for someone to buy these contracts and put the latest "24 hour all ______ network" on the air.

Comcast couldn't get G4 onto the Dish services because they're kind of locked in a blood-grudge right now, so Comcast bought the company to get G4 on the air, and in addition to that bought the hosts and programming and trimmed it down to what they wanted to keep.

Be happy with what you've got, I guess, as if anyone else had bought the station the result would have been that all former TechTV programs would have gone off the air entirely never to be seen again.

The problem with G4 is the fact you get hooked on it when you first start watching it then it becomes a whole lotta repeats and you get bored with it very fast. Their main problem is the fact they need more new shows that have stuff to do with electronics and video games but for some odd reason their doing the whipset now and that horrible tv show with Bill Belonmy (sp?). Its not to bad but it needs more fresh shows to become more watchable.

G4 is probably my most frequent background noise channel. I actively watch X-Play, Attack of the Show, and Anime Unleashed. Icons and Cinematech on occasion. I like Cinematech's new direction, it's not so boring anymore. Everything else gives me little or no reason to watch.

I miss Screen Savers and Unscrewed. Hell, Unscrewed would fit perfectly in that Barbed Wire Biscuit block, their cheap attempt to capitalize on the Adult Swim audience. Great foresight.

X-Play

Icons

Cinematech

Happy Tree Friends and Friends (late-night)

Cheat was good until that Holt chick took over, when they had codes on it. I remember when there was cheats on it, but now I put the show on mute when there is a commercial for it.

For fuck sakes, put X-Play, and some old Tech TV shows on DVD.

Dumb name aside, I really like Attack of the Show. And Icons is a pretty good show. Otherwise it's not a bad default channel. If nothing else is on sometimes I'll turn it there and can usually be somewhat entertained.

My Morgan Webb crush is well known at TSM. Laura Foy is also yummy.

And I miss The Screen Savers and Unscrewed as well.

Comcast bought Techtv so that they could get G4 onto other cable networks since practically no one other than Comcast carried G4 and Tech TV was on both sat services and a lot of cable too. They never had any intention of keeping any of the Tech TV shows..and aside from X Play (which was one of TechTVs few game themed shows) thats pretty much all that remains. Call for Help being back doesn't really count, they just re-air it from Tech TV Canada or whatever its called.

Oh, and fun little fact. Martin Sargent posts on Fark, and he has a blog..I feel pretty bad for him though..

X-Play is probably 3 times better than anything else on that network. They actually try to put on a show, versus everything else which is just people standing around talking to each other ("Attack of the Show!" the the worst when it comes to this).

Icons is pretty good, but gets corny and pretencious sometimes.

I have a similar problem with Attack of the Show. It seems the people that host it just stand around talking aimlessly to eachother with no real rhyme or reason, most of the time. Not to mention the MUMBLING on the show. 9 times out of 10 the 2 guys on the show will be talking about something and they'll get to where they mumble at eachother so low, you have to turn the volume up considerably just to hear what they're saying.

I used to live for Unscrewed, everynight. I wish G4 would've given the show a proper send-off instead of cancelling it out of the blue. Why waste money giving the show a brand new set once the G4TechTV merger happened, only to cancel it a few short weeks later? :stupid:

X-Play is almost always good. I dont jump on the post-Maxim Morgan sucks bandwagon because I still find the show entertaining. They have the occasional funny skit on the show, and some of the specialty shows such as "Games so bad, we couldnt actually score them" are always good.

Filter is usually good, though G4 seems to enjoy rerunning the same episodes over and over. The host, Diane Mizota (sp?) is extremely cute as well.

Icons is always entertaining, giving you a quick 30-minute history lesson on a particular subject: Mortal Kombat, Sega, X-Box, Playstation, Mario Bros, etc.

Cheat can be quite entertaining, due in part to that wonderfully attractive host Kristen Holt (I think thats her name). Though, sometimes she can be a little annoying.

There is a lot to see on the channel though, so try to catch each show at least once if you have time.

For the Tech TV fans, Leo Patrick and Kevin Rose are doing a couple podcasts now, the big one of them being This Week in Tech at twit.tv It's a great little show along with Diggnation.

Lots of Ex-tech Tv guys doing stuff, if you know where to look
