PPVs and your moneys worth

I had grown tired of the WCW product around November 96 when the Hogan/Piper program had started. After purchasing almost every WCW PPV from late 95 and all of 96 I was now only sporadically buying their shows. Starrcade was a "final chance" for the company to hook me once again. They failed miserably. I had tons of friends over for the show and no one made any noise the whole night. Now admittedly, these guys really were never into the Benoits, Guerreros, Malenkos, but they weren't into ANY match that night. They wanted to get into Hogan/Sting, but the booking prevented them from doing so. The show was just so BORING, and did not have the feel of a big time event.

 

That was the night I gave up on WCW for good. And the only time I really felt like I wasted money on wrestling.

Pretty much almost all the Unforgiven, Armageddon, and GAB PPVs suck complete ass.  Oh yeah and Bad Blood 2003.

I actually thought this last Armageddon wasn't that bad. Rey & RVD v Dupree & Sasaki was fun as was the ME.

Fall Brawl '98 was the only PPV I've chipped in money to order (and with four or five other guys, it was relatively cheap). As someone else alluded to, that PPV sucked, even though there was no reason for it not to be a stellar show, given who WCW had available at the time.

 

Wrestling companies (or WWE now at least) need to realize they need to give people their money's worth if they want repeat business.

 

Right now we only have basic cable (first 80 or so channels), and our company only enables PPV ordering if you have a digital (more expensive) package, so right now it's a moot point...I couldn't order a PPV even if I wanted to.

I pretty much stopped ordering WWE ppvs a couple years ago because I was consistently disapointed with the product. Now, with the glorified TV shows that are the RAW and SD ppvs, I know ahead of time that I won't be satisfied so it saves me the trouble of even entertaining the thought. The only two shows I even consider ordering are the Rumbles and Mania, and maybe Survivor Series if the elimination matches look good. I wish they'd just go back to 6 or 8 ppvs, I feel bad for the people who get suckered into shows like last night's where it's clearly a placeholder card.

 

From my POV WWE would get more PPV money out of me running less shows, but obviously there are enough people who don't mind the lower quality product to justify the insane amount of pay shows they run...

You know, I have a friend I go to school with who actually ordered Unforgiven last night and LOVED it. She loved the Flair IC title win, the main event, and thought the HBK/Masters match was "interesting."

 

She was also not upset at all about the DQ end for the main event.

 

Needless to say, I bet WWE wishes more fans were like my friend.

From 99-00 I ordered just about every ppv...then the shows just weren't as fun, so I ordered less in 2001. Then for 2002 and 2003 it was just Manias and Rumbles. 2004, not a single ppv. And all I've seen this year was Wrestlemania on a theater screen

On the flip side,What ppvs did you buy where you felt your money was well spent ?There were a bunch of ppvs I liked but didn't think they were worth the whole $30.Two exceptions that come to mind are

 

Bash at the Beach 96

Wrestlemania 14

Wrestlemania 17, 19, and 20 all felt like money well spent. As did Summer Slam 01.

 

However, my luck with ppvs is generally not good. Throw these stinkers on the list of wasted money for me:

 

Wrestlemania 15

Unforgiven 2000

Invasion

Royal Rumble 02

Royal Rumble 04 (Loved Benoit winning, everything else sucked)

 

And I was just inches away from buying the GAB this year... I felt dirty for even considering that idea afterwards.

I didn't include KOTR 97 or Royal Rumble 99 on the above list, because at the time, I was entertained by both.

+ Wrestlemania XIV

+ Vengeance 03

+ Canadian Stampede

+ Judgment Day 00

 

The latter three were all shows that I ordered at the last minute, and all three were great from top to bottom.

KOTR 99 and 2000 didn't live up to the hype. Nor did Spring Stampede 2000. I was thisclose to ordering KOTR 2002, too.

Its a shame that 'consumer rights' and 'trades descriptions' dont apply to PPVs.

 

If something is advertised such as "THis is the worlds fastest car.. best car ever in the history of all cars" and it turned out to be the same as all the other cars then we are covered by consumer rights and the trades descriptions act because it was false advertising.

 

So how can the WWE get away by telling us a PPV is going to be awesome and not deliver what they promote? Has anyone ever tried to get a PPV refund?

With a car, there's quantitative tests to determine fraud.

 

With a PPV, it's a matter of opinion whether it is good/bad.

Fully Loaded 2000 was an amazing PPV. I don't care if Taker beat Angle. It was all completely worth the money.
